Historical research into emotionality is at present generally enjoying an heightened level of interest. This bilingual volume documents the proceedings of an international conference, discussing current paradigms and perspectives in historical literary research into emotions and heightening awareness of the mediality of cultures of emotion in historical change. The discussion of methodological questions opens up avenues for interdisciplinary research.

The religious plays found in many European cultures from the Middle Ages up until the modern age are closely related to devout practices and draw their subjects from worship, the bible and legends. The contributions to this interdisciplinary anthology take a look at religious plays as cultural performances and as part of a multimedia devout practice. The articles investigate the position of these plays within the culture of medieval daily life and festivity, the relationship between the spiritual and the secular, and the staging of cultural structural models in the plays.

Cliges was probably written after Erec et Enide and is thus Chretien de Troyes' second romance. There are several modern English and French translations of the text, but a need has long been felt for a modern German version, particularly as references in Middle High German texts and text fragments indicate that there was at least one Middle High German version. This gap is now filled with the present modern German translation which is published together with the original text in a bilingual edition; this means that the special position which Cliges takes up in more than one respect in the history of the medieval European romance can now form a stronger focus in German Studies. Thus a broader basis is formed both for interdisciplinary medieval studies and for research into the history and theory of the romance. A comprehensive introduction sketches the most important problems in interpreting the work, the present state of research into Cliges in international Romance Studies and its place in the history of the Arthurian romance. With the translation, the introduction, the commentary, and a comprehensive bibliography, this monograph provides an indispensable foundation for future research. It is anticipated that it will meet with wide interest and significantly alter the view taken by German Studies of the history of the romance in medieval Europe.

Feelings not only determine our everyday life, they have also become a central theme of humanistic and scientific research. This volume offers exemplary insights into the methods of emotion research. Among other emotions, the presentation of anger, fear, fascination and laughter is explored in individual analyses, along with how emotions function in medieval literary texts. Taken together, the contributions provide important insights on the cultural modeling of feelings and into processes of historical transformation.

This volume contains papers from the 13th Anglo-German colloquium assembling medieval German scholars from the English- and German-speaking world at the University of Bristol in 1993. The overarching topic is approached from a variety of different thematic and methodological vantages and levels. Rigorous systematisation was not the aim, nor would this have been sensible, given the present state of research. The contents are arranged in accordance with formal and thematic criteria to point up important connections and contiguities.
