Join Ivan Johnson in this memoir of an identity crisis as a high-spirited boy from a close-knit family on the Cape Flats becomes a man amid the turmoil of The Struggle.
Joining the lily white advertising industry, he ghosts from group to group, fitting in everywhere but belonging nowhere.
Told with flair and irreverence, Ivan’s sharp eye and zest for life gives both food for thought and great entertainment.
The Near North is a vivid account of life in Johannesburg in times of crisis.
From the stony ridges of Langermann Kop in Kensington to the tree-lined avenues of Houghton, we follow the writer through the city's streets, meeting its ghosts and journeying through time and (often circumscribed) space, finding meaning in the everyday and incidental.
At once an echo of Ivan Vladislavić’s award-winning Portrait with Keys and an original work of intense acuity and quiet power, The Near North is both intimate and expansive, ranging from small domestic dramas to great public spectacles.
Wryly playful at times, fiercely serious at others, it is certain to move and delight all who accompany the writer through its pages.
This book covers emerging trends in signal processing research and
biomedical engineering, exploring the ways in which signal
processing plays a vital role in applications ranging from medical
electronics to data mining of electronic medical records. Topics
covered include statistical modeling of electroencephalograph data
for predicting or detecting seizure, stroke, or Parkinson's;
machine learning methods and their application to biomedical
problems, which is often poorly understood, even within the
scientific community; signal analysis; medical imaging; and machine
learning, data mining, and classification. The book features
tutorials and examples of successful applications that will appeal
to a wide range of professionals and researchers interested in
applications of signal processing, medicine, and biology.
Collection of two comedies. In 'No Strings Attached' (2011), when
long-time friends Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher)
decide to add a physical dimension to their relationship and move
into 'friends with benefits' territory, they agree to keep things
strictly casual and on a 'no strings' basis. But before long both
of them find things becoming more complicated than planned as those
pesky emotions get in the way. In 'Morning Glory' (2010), a sparky,
ambitious young television producer spies an opportunity to claw
her way up the career ladder when she is offered a job on
'Daybreak', the worst-performing morning chat show in the ratings.
Her decision to hire veteran newscaster Mike Pomeroy (Harrison
Ford) to host the show meets with scepticism from network executive
Jerry (Jeff Goldblum) and co-host Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), and
with little enthusiasm from Pomeroy himself, who is obliged by his
contract to take this less-than-promising gig. Can Becky overcome
the poor ratings and in-fighting to bring the team together and
transform the show into something to be proud of?
Four animated escapades for the Real Ghostbusters. In 'Adventures
in Slime and Space' Egon's 'ghost net' creates havoc when it slices
Slimer into a multitude of smaller facsimiles. 'Ghostbusted' sees
the team try their hand at crimebusting after wiping out all of the
ghosts in the city, but their new profession soon leads them into
danger. 'Knock-Knock' finds New York's subway over-run by ghosts,
goblins and ghouls. 'Venkman's Ghost Repellers' has a host of sea
ghosts form themselves into the ship-gobbling New Jersey
Parallelogram.
Ivan Petrov was born in 1934 in the industrial town of Chapaevsk.
His father was shot by Stalin as an 'enemy of the people', and Ivan
was brought up by his mother and violent stepfather - both
alcoholics, along with most of the rest of the town. By his early
20s, Ivan had also succumbed to the lure of the bottle. 'Smashed in
the USSR' is his eye-opening, frequently eye-watering story.
Unlike ""fix-it"" strategies that targeted teachers are likely to
resist, educator-centered instructional coaching-ECIC-offers
respectful coaching for professionals within their schoolwide
community. Evidence-based results across all content areas,
authentic practices for data collection and analysis, along with
nonevaluative, confidential collaboration offer a productive and
promising path to teacher development. Coaches and teachers
implement ECIC through a before-during-after-BDA-cycle that
includes comprehensive planning between coach and teacher;
classroom visitation and data collection; and debriefing and
reflection. Drawing on their extensive experience with ECIC,
authors Ellen B. Eisenberg, Bruce P. Eisenberg, Elliott A. Medrich,
and Ivan Charner offer this detailed guidance for coaches and
school leaders on how you and your school can: Create the
conditions for an effective ECIC program. Get buy-in from teachers.
Clearly define the role of coach. Roll out a coaching initiative.
Ensure ongoing success with coaching. Filled with authentic advice
from coaches, Instructional Coaching in Action provides valuable
insight and demonstrates how educator-centered instructional
coaching can make a difference in teacher learning, instructional
practice, and student outcomes.
