Growth and Intimacy for Gay Men: A Workbook is an educational
workbook for gay men that covers a variety of topics, including
family of origin, addiction, self-image, dating and relationships,
AIDS and multiple loss, and spirituality. Each chapter provides an
overview of the mental health concerns of gay men, as well as
exercises the reader can do to facilitate his personal
understanding of the issues covered. While the book is written in
nontechnical language, making it useful to the general public, its
wide selection of workbook exercises makes it useful for
psychotherapists and counselors working with gay men. Growth and
Intimacy for Gay Men is written to the reader--with brief examples
from the author 's work as a clinical psychologist helping gay men.
A central goal of the book is to normalize the feelings and
experiences the reader has, as many gay men feel like they re the
only ones with their feelings or experiences. The book 's
problem-solving approach addresses: family of origin--provides
exercises to identify and examine gay men 's role in the family,
examine their childhood perceptions of being different, and help
them map out family patterns and dynamics self-image--includes
self-image assessment questionnaires and written exercises that
challenge the reader to look at how they re affected by societal
perceptions addiction--explores why gay men are vulnerable to
addictive behavior and offers strategies for change and
self-assessment exercises dating and relationships--covers the
unique challenges faced by gay men, with exercises for single as
well as coupled men AIDS and mental health--provides exercises to
help the reader examine the impact of AIDS on his own life and to
assess the impact of multiple loss and prolonged grief Readers can
do the workbook exercises on their own, or therapists can assign
chapters and exercises as homework, with clients bringing the
completed assignment to therapy for more in-depth exploration and
discussion. By providing informative chapters and useful exercises,
Growth and Intimacy for Gay Men becomes an avenue through which gay
men can understand their identity, experiences, and goals.
Even as the specter of populism haunts contemporary societies,
scholars have not been able to agree about what it is. Except for
one thing: a deviation from democracy, the source, it seems, of the
precarious position in which so many societies find themselves
today. This volume aims to break the Gordian knot of "populism" by
bringing a new social theory to bear and, in so doing so,
suggesting that normative judgments about this misunderstood
phenomenon need to be reconsidered as well. Populism is not a
democratic deviation but a naturally occurring dimension of civil
sphere dynamics, fatal to democracy only at the extremes. Because
populism is highly polarizing, it has the effect of inducing
anxiety that civil solidarity is breaking apart. Left populists
feel as if civil solidarity is an illusion, that democratic
discourse is a fig leaf for private interests, and that the social
and cultural differentiation that vouchsafes the independence of
the civil sphere merely reflects the hegemony of narrow
professional interests or those of a ruling class. Right populists
share the same distrust, even repulsion, for the civil sphere. What
seems civil to the center and left, like affirmative action or open
immigration, they call out as particularistic; honored civil icons,
such as Holocaust memorials, they trash. How can the sense of a
vital civil center survive such censure from populism on the left
and the right? Populism in the Civil Sphere provides compelling
answers to these fundamental questions. Its contributions are both
sophisticated theoretical interventions and deeply researched
empirical studies, and it will be of great interest to anyone
concerned about the most important political developments of our
time.
This book presents a tentative assessment of the Argentine leader,
Juan Domingo Peron's overall importance in his own country and in
the American Hemisphere. It is based largely on the observations of
the author on the evolution of Argentina over almost a third of a
century.
This title was first published in 2000. This text presents a
two-volume collection of theoretical articles on the topic of
freedom of speech. The articles have all been written since the
early 1970s. The first volume begins with an encyclopaedia entry,
functioning as an overview of the topic, and further articles deal
with justificatory theories of freedom of speech, the scope of the
First Amendment, the value of free speech, communication control in
law and society, and what kinds of acts raise freedom of speech
concerns. The second volume turns to doctrinal theories, examining
insults, incitements and governmental subsidies. Areas addressed
include distinctions between content regulations, Robert Post's
concepts of the public forum and public discourse and their bearing
on free speech doctrine, and the significant arena for free speech
controversies in the future.

This comprehensive, case-based resource provides the
state-of-the-art knowledge that can help readers improve access and
optimize delivery of stroke thrombectomy. Improving access to
stroke is of particular importance because patients often
misinterpret their symptoms or cannot speak for themselves if they
have aphasia. More importantly, access needs to be organized
because stroke therapies are all extremely time-sensitive.
Scalable, choreographed protocols are necessary for emergency
medical systems to 'capture' stroke patients and automatically
transport and triage to time-sensitive treatments. Many of the
chapters in the first section on Fundamentals and Systems provide
valuable insight in improving access to stroke care. Replete with
illustrative case studies and emphasizing that treatment approaches
to stroke should not be comprised of a one-size-fits-all approach,
this illuminating title provides the complete thought, detail,
insight and organization that will help readers meet the needs of
stroke patients with large vessel occlusions. 12 Strokes: A
Case-based Guide to Acute Ischemic Stroke Management examines the
primary technical principles that underlie the current thrombectomy
approaches. Instead of continuing the conceptual dichotomy of stent
vs. aspiration, many of the chapters look at underlying principles
and then discuss ways in which the currently available devices and
approaches can best exploit them. The variety, creativity and
detail in many of these chapters will help the reader develop a
deeper understanding that might assist their ability to
successfully take care of their next patient that 'doesn't follow
the textbook.' In addition, the anatomic and pathophysiologic
classification of the core Twelve Chapters will help readers
organize their thinking and approach. This knowledge, particularly
because it is organized based on common, challenging syndromes,
will arm the reader to quickly recognize patterns and deftly adapt
their management approaches to the needs of the patient. An
invaluable contribution to the clinical literature, 12 Strokes: A
Case-based Guide to Acute Ischemic Stroke Management will be of
great interest to not only neurosurgeons and neurologists but other
specialists, primary care providers, and trainees as well.
The stir caused in the civilised world by the writings of Bergson,
particularly during the past decade, is evidenced by the volume of
the stream of exposition and comment which has flowed and is still
flowing. If the French were to be tempted to set up, after the
German manner, a Bergson-Archiv they would be in no embarrassment
for material, as the Appendix to this book - limited though it
wisely is - will show. The author, undaunted by all this, makes a
further, useful contribution in his unassuming but workmanlike and
well-documented account of the ideas of the distinguished French
thinker. It is designed to serve as an introduction to Bergson's
philosophy for those who are making their first approach to it, and
as such it can be commended.
Most books about bullying tell children how to act without
addressing how they feel. But the usual advice to 'ignore it' or
'say something smart' is doomed to fail, as you can't act brave and
confident if you feel stressed and helpless inside. Jenny
Alexander's approach is to develop readers' psychological defences.
Through an entertaining mix of exercises, quizzes and fictional
scenarios, she combines common sense with simple cognitive therapy
techniques, to build up children's self esteem. Her tone is
humorous and upbeat, but always sensitive to the reader's feelings.
This new, updated edition takes account of recent technologies such
as texting, MSN and bluejacking, which are increasingly abused by
bullies.

This book deals with an information-driven approach to plan
materials discovery and design, iterative learning. The authors
present contrasting but complementary approaches, such as those
based on high throughput calculations, combinatorial experiments or
data driven discovery, together with machine-learning methods.
Similarly, statistical methods successfully applied in other
fields, such as biosciences, are presented. The content spans from
materials science to information science to reflect the
cross-disciplinary nature of the field. A perspective is presented
that offers a paradigm (codesign loop for materials design) to
involve iteratively learning from experiments and calculations to
develop materials with optimum properties. Such a loop requires the
elements of incorporating domain materials knowledge, a database of
descriptors (the genes), a surrogate or statistical model developed
to predict a given property with uncertainties, performing adaptive
experimental design to guide the next experiment or calculation and
aspects of high throughput calculations as well as experiments. The
book is about manufacturing with the aim to halving the time to
discover and design new materials. Accelerating discovery relies on
using large databases, computation, and mathematics in the material
sciences in a manner similar to the way used to in the Human Genome
Initiative. Novel approaches are therefore called to explore the
enormous phase space presented by complex materials and processes.
To achieve the desired performance gains, a predictive capability
is needed to guide experiments and computations in the most
fruitful directions by reducing not successful trials. Despite
advances in computation and experimental techniques, generating
vast arrays of data; without a clear way of linkage to models, the
full value of data driven discovery cannot be realized. Hence,
along with experimental, theoretical and computational materials
science, we need to add a "fourth leg'' to our toolkit to make the
"Materials Genome'' a reality, the science of Materials
Informatics.
Understanding Complex Urban Systems takes as its point of departure
the insight that the challenges of global urbanization and the
complexity of urban systems cannot be understood - let alone
'managed' - by sectoral and disciplinary approaches alone. But
while there has recently been significant progress in broadening
and refining the methodologies for the quantitative modeling of
complex urban systems, in deepening the theoretical understanding
of cities as complex systems, or in illuminating the implications
for urban planning, there is still a lack of well-founded
conceptual thinking on the methodological foundations and the
strategies of modeling urban complexity across the disciplines.
Bringing together experts from the fields of urban and spatial
planning, ecology, urban geography, real estate analysis,
organizational cybernetics, stochastic optimization, and literary
studies, as well as specialists in various systems approaches and
in transdisciplinary methodologies of urban analysis, the volume
seeks to advance the discussion on multidisciplinary approaches to
urban modeling. While engaging with the 'state of the art' in their
respective fields, the contributions are specifically written for
both experts from a broad range of disciplines as well as for urban
practitioners who feel the need for new approaches given the
uncertainty of current developments.

A major question in studies of aesthetic expression is how we can
understand and explain similarities and differences among different
forms of representation. In the current volume, this question is
addressed through the lens of make-believe theory, a philosophical
theory broadly introduced by two seminal works - Kendall Walton's
Mimesis as Make-Believe and Gregory Currie's The Nature of Fiction,
both published 1990. Since then, make-believe theory has become
central in the philosphical discussion of representation. As a
first of its kind, the current volume comprises 17 detailed studies
of highly different forms of representation, such as novels, plays,
TV-series, role games, computer games, lamentation poetry and
memoirs. The collection contributes to establishing make-believe
theory as a powerful theoretical tool for a wide array of studies
traditionally falling under the humanities umbrella.

In this book, one of the world's leading social theorists
presents a critical, alarmed, but also nuanced understanding of the
post-traditional world we inhabit today. Jeffrey Alexander writes
about modernity as historical time and social condition, but also
as ideology and utopia. The idea of modernity embodies the
Enlightenment's noble hopes for progress and rationality, but its
reality brings great suffering and exposes the destructive impulses
that continue to motivate humankind.Alexander examines how
twentieth-century theorists struggled to comprehend the Janus-faced
character of modernity, which looks backward and forward at the
same time. Weber linked the triumph of worldly asceticism to
liberating autonomy but also ruthless domination, describing
flights from rationalization as systemic and dangerous. Simmel
pointed to the otherness haunting modernity, even as he normalized
the stranger. Eisenstadt celebrated Axial Age transcendence, but
acknowledged its increasing capacity for barbarity. Parsons
heralded American community, but ignored modernity's
fragmentations.Rather than seeking to resolve modernity's
contradictions, Alexander argues that social theory should accept
its Janus-faced character. It is a dangerous delusion to think that
modernity can eliminate evil. Civil inclusion and anti-civil
exclusion are intertwined. Alexander enumerates dangerous frictions
endemic to modernity, but he also suggests new lines of social
amelioration and emotional repair.
This book provides insight into the emerging global knowledge
village dialectic. Global perspectives produce a new world view on
specialized knowledge as the unit of reference for stocks and flows
of the hybrid good: the building blocks of the knowledge economy.
This book is vital for public sector policy makers and private
sector practitioners.
