Campbell and Cole, respected teachers and active researchers, draw
on traditional and current scholarship to present complex
interpretations in this new edition of their engaging account of
Italian Renaissance art. The book's unique decade-by-decade
structure is easy to follow, and permits the authors to tell the
story of art not only in the great centres of Rome, Florence and
Venice, but also in a range of other cities and sites throughout
Italy, including more in this edition from Naples, Padua and
Palermo. This approach allows the artworks to take centre-stage, in
contrast to the book's competitors, which are organized by location
or by artist. Other updates for this edition include an expanded
first chapter on the Trecento, and a new `Techniques and Materials'
appendix that explains and illustrates all of the major art-making
processes of the period. Richly illustrated with high-quality
reproductions and new photography of recent restorations, it
presents the classic canon of Renaissance painting and sculpture in
full, while expanding the scope of conventional surveys by offering
a more thorough coverage of architecture, decorative and domestic
arts, and print media.
Spider monkeys are one of the most widespread New World primate
genera, ranging from southern Mexico to Bolivia. Although they are
common in zoos, spider monkeys are traditionally very difficult to
study in the wild, because they are fast moving, live high in the
canopy and are almost always found in small subgroups that vary in
size and composition throughout the day. The past decade has seen
an expansion in research being carried out on this genus and this
book is an assimilation of both published and previously
unpublished research. It is a comprehensive source of information
for academic researchers and graduate students interested in
primatology, evolutionary anthropology and behavioral ecology and
covers topics such as taxonomy, diet, sexuality and reproduction,
and conservation.
This work provides readers with an authoritative resource for
understanding the true extent and nature of gun violence in
America, examining the veracity of claims and counterclaims about
mass shootings, gun laws, and public attitudes about gun control.
This work is part of a series that uses evidence-based
documentation to examine the veracity of claims and beliefs about
high-profile issues in American culture and politics. Each book in
the Contemporary Debates series is intended to puncture rather than
perpetuate myths that diminish our understanding of important
policies and positions; to provide needed context for misleading
statements and claims; and to confirm the factual accuracy of other
assertions. This particular volume examines beliefs, claims, and
myths about gun violence, gun laws, and gun rights in the United
States. Issues covered in the book include trends in firearm
violence, mass shootings, the impact of gun ownership on rates and
types of crime, regulations and Supreme Court decisions regarding
gun control and the Second Amendment, and the activities and
influence of organizations ranging from the National Rifle
Association to Everytown for Gun Safety. All of these topics are
examined in individualized entries, with objective responses
grounded in up-to-date evidence. Easy-to-navigate Q&A format
Quantifiable data from respected sources as the foundation for
examining every issue Extensive Further Reading sections for each
entry providing readers with leads to conduct further research
Examinations of claims made by individuals and groups of all
political backgrounds and ideologies
Cytogenetic studies of malignancy have become an essential tool
in the clinical management of cancer patients. Cancer Cytogenetics:
Methods and Protocols presents eminently practical key cytogenetic
and FISH techniques for every stage of diagnostic service. Experts
in the field describe detailed cytogenetic analysis methods,
fluorescence in situ hybridization and array methods currently
being applied to investigate and diagnose different varieties of
cancer. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular
Biology series format, chapters contain introductions to their
respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents,
and step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols. The
authors of the various chapters have also provided extensive notes
to guide individuals who are new to these methods through the
pitfalls that bedevil all such testing.
Authoritative and accessible, Cancer Cytogenetics: Methods and
Protocols serves as an ideal guide to scientists of all
backgrounds, allowing them to either establish new techniques in
their laboratories or find the different variations of standard
methods helpful in improving their results.

Are the global trends toward democratization and neoliberal
economic development also providing enhanced protection for human
rights? In this edited collection of theoretical essays and case
studies, the contributors assess the often glaring contradiction
between democratization trends in developing countries in the face
of continuing human rights violations. The volume begins by asking
whether we need to rethink our conceptualizations of democracy,
human rights, and development, and particularly the causal
relationships between these areas. An analysis of the changing
nature of the international norms associated with these concepts
illustrates some of the inherent contradictions. Next, an
assessment of the status of women in the new democracies
demonstrates the fallacy of assuming that all citizens progress
equally, and underscores the necessity for including gender
considerations and needs. Case studies based in Latin America and
Africa examine further the relationships between democracy and
human rights, with particular emphasis on the issue of
consolidation in the future. The contributors conclude that
democracy and development will only be sustainable with the active
participation of civil society, especially nongovernmental groups.
This collection will be important for students, scholars, and
policy makers involved with issues of human rights and
democratization in developing countries.
This book offers a highly personal, detailed, and richly
anecdotal history of the organization known worldwide as CARE. The
author, who is a founding member of CARE and was active in its
development, also served as the organization's President and
Treasurer. Now President Emeritus, he is in a unique position to
provide an intimate look at the events that transformed CARE from a
food package service to Europe following World War II into an
international series of organizations interested in relief, school
lunch programs and nutritional education, refugee assistance, and
development assistance around the world. Throughout, the author
emphasizes the pivotal role that private voluntary organizations
like CARE can play in international relief and their impact on the
process of economic growth and development so critical to world
peace and stability.
Campbell tells us how, when, and why CARE was formed in the
United States in the aftermath of the devastation left by World War
II; what the problems were; how people responded to the effort; how
the cooperative organization and its problems grew and changed from
a limited system of food package deliveries to broader efforts in
the fields of food aid, disaster and emergency relief, and
promoting development; and how people in some countries formerly
aided by CARE became part of today's 11 nation network of national
CARE organizations dedicated to helping meet the needs of the
developing world. Because this is a personal account, Campbell
focuses on the men and women who founded and continue to sustain
CARE--people who believe it is not enough simply to support the
concept of help for those in need, but who reinforce that concept
with a personal commitment to action. Writing partly from his own
records, partly from materials compiled for CARE archives by
employees and officials, and partly from personal recollections,
Campbell has provided a unique memoir of a unique organization--one
that will be welcomed enthusiastically by CARE employees and
contributors, development policy planners, and anyone who has been
involved in the activities of the organization during its 45-year
history.

In 1890 a case of myxedema was treated in Lisbon by the
implantation of a sheep thyroid gland with the immediate
improvement in the patient's condition. A few years later,
medications for the then ill-explained condition of the menopause
included tablets made from cow ovaries. In the first quarter of the
20th century the identification of vitamin D, and its sunlight
driven production in skin, paved the way to the elimination of
rickets as a major medical problem. Twenty years or so later, Sir
Vincent Wigglesworth established the endocrine basis of
developmental moulting in insects, arguably the most commonly
performed animal behaviour on Planet Earth. A paradigm that would
unify these disparate observations arose between 1985 and 1987
beginning with the identification of the glucocorticoid receptor
and the nuclear receptor super-family. What follows is a timely and
positive manifestation of the capacity, productivity and value of
international human scientific endeavour. Based on intrigue, lively
competition and cooperation a global effort has rapidly fostered a
school of biology with widespread ramifications for the
understanding of metazoan animals, the human condition and the
state of the planet. This book is the first this century to try and
capture the spirit of this endeavour, to depict where the field is
now and to identify some of the challenges and opportunities for
the future.
This book considers the reception of the early modern culture of
Florence, Rome, and Venice in other centers of the Italic
peninsula, such as Ferrara, Bologna, Ancona, San Gimignano, and
Pistoia, which had flourishing local cultures of their own.
Offering a perspective that focuses on dialogue and exchange
between different urban centers and cultural groups, it also
involves a reexamination of the Renaissance itself as a form of
translation of a past culture, one that attempted to assimilate the
lost or fragmentary world of the Roman emperors, the Greek
Platonists, and the ancient Egyptians. Collectively the essays
examine how the processes of cultural self-definition varied
between the Italian urban centers in the early modern period, well
before the formation of a distinct Italian national identity.
Exploring how artistic forms made the transition from one Italian
city to another, attention is also focused on the subtle
modification of practice required by local conditions and
priorities.
Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) includes scholars and
practitioners throughout the world working in peace studies,
conflict analysis and resolution, conflict management, appropriate
dispute resolution, and peace and justice studies. They come to the
PCS field with a diversity of ideas, approaches, disciplinary
roots, and topic areas, which speaks to the complexity, breadth,
and depth needed to apply and take account of conflict dynamics and
the goal of peace. Yet, a number of key concerns and dilemmas
continue to challenge the field. Critical Issues in Peace and
Conflict Studies: Theory, Practice, and Pedagogy, edited by Thomas
Matyok, Jessica Senehi, and Sean Byrne, is a collection of essays
that explores a number of these issues, providing a means by which
academics, students, and practitioners can develop various methods
to confront the complexity of contemporary conflicts. Critical

working in and leading community conflict resolution efforts as
well as humanitarian aid workers."
Emphasizing on the one hand the reconstruction of the material
culture of specific residences, and on the other, the way in which
particular domestic objects reflect, shape, and mediate family
values and relationships within the home, this volume offers a
distinct contribution to research on the early modern Italian
domestic interior. Though the essays mainly take an art historical
approach, the book is interdisciplinary in that it considers the
social implications of domestic objects for family members of
different genders, age, and rank, as well as for visitors to the
home. By adopting a broad chronological framework that encompasses
both Renaissance and Baroque Italy, and by expanding the regional
scope beyond Florence and Venice to include domestic interiors from
less studied centers such as Urbino, Ferrara, and Bologna, this
collection offers genuinely new perspectives on the home in early
modern Italy.
Campbell offers a conceptual look into the nature of genocidal
intent, systematically analyzing the conceptual and logical
structures for genocidal intent, and discussing its theoretical
foundations. The analysis offers particular insight into the
process of operationalizing genocide and mass extermination. The
investigation includes discussion of the roles orchestrators play
and the systematic development of a genocidal strategy, which
requires the intent to purge pre-selected demographic identifiers
from the population. Cambell also analyzes in detail the dynamic
process of generational conflict, wherein former perpetrators
become victims and victims become perpetrators.

Peace Education and the Adult Learner presents a survey of recent
developments in adult and peace education. This book offers new
educational models for teaching adult learners interested in peace
education and conflict resolution. The authors masterfully situate
the foundations of these models within a discourse of conflict
escalation and conflict resolution. Teaching adult learners about
peace education also requires the cultivation of keen critical
thinking skills and an understanding of basic conflict resolution
strategies. Equipped with such tools, adult learners will
invariably develop organic models of conflict resolution. Instead
of structuring a formulaic, process-based strategy of peace
education, this book analyzes contemporary conflicts and
contemplates possible strategies for resolution. Peace Education
and the Adult Learner explains how educators can inspire their
students to develop specific context-based resolution strategies,
rather than apply generalized theoretical models to specific
instances of conflict.
There is an important debate raging about whether Iraq is becoming
another Vietnam. Those who deny the similarities most vociferously
are often those who know (or remember) the least about Vietnam.
Kenneth Campbell knows Vietnam from his thirteen months of fighting
there (he received a Purple Heart), and years of political
organizing to get the United States out of the war. Here, Campbell
lays out the political process of getting into, sinking deeper,
hitting bottom, and finally pulling out of the Vietnam quagmire. He
traces the chief lessons of Vietnam, which helped the United States
successfully avoid quagmires for thirty years, and explains how
neoconservatives within the Bush administration cynically used the
tragedy of 9/11 to override the "Vietnam syndrome" and drag the
nation into a new quagmire in Iraq. In view of where the United
States finds itself today-unable to stay but unable to
leave-Campbell recommends that the country rededicate itself to the
essential lessons of Vietnam: the danger of imperial arrogance, the
limits of military force, the importance of international and
constitutional law, and the power of morality.
