Though it is not uncommon for historians to have something to say
concerning philosophical strands in Jefferson s thought, that
something is usually insubstantial often misleadingly so or
inchoate. Overall, precious little has been said. The significance
of the man and the richness of his thought demands that this defect
be remedied. Thomas Jefferson and Philosophy is a collection of
nine new essays on philosophical elements in Jefferson s writings.
The first of its kind, this collection should lead to further
philosophical analysis of Jefferson s thinking especially by
philosophers, who tend to appreciate Jefferson only as the author
of the Declaration of Independence and to greater appreciation for
the man who gave to statesmanship a large number of the prime of
his years out of a moral sense of duty to others. In that regard,
Jefferson was always first a philosopher. This book will be a
valuable read for students and scholars of history, political
theory, and philosophy, as well as anyone interested in the thought
of Thomas Jefferson."
""This important book covers developmental outcomes of children
in this predicament, parenting from prison, and family
reunification. It is filled with research findings and addresses
clinical issues as well. Many children are affected by a parent in
the criminal justice system, and this book is sorely needed. The
editors and contributors have produced a wonderful resource."

This book serves as a comprehensive source for understanding and
intervening with children of incarcerated parents. The text
examines the daunting clinical implications inherent in trauma
throughout development, as well as social and political roles in
ameliorating intergenerational delinquency. This book
conceptualizes the problem by using an ecological framework that is
focused on the experience of the child. "Children of Incarcerated
Parents "addresses developmental and clinical issues experienced
throughout the trajectory of childhood and adolescence with a focus
on interventions and social policies to improve outcomes for this
under-studied group. The chapters explore individual, community,
and national levels of policy, programming, and legislation.
Teaching is an essential skill in becoming a faculty member in any
institution of higher education. Yet how is that skill actually
acquired by graduate students? Teaching as if Learning Matters
collects first-person narratives from graduate students and new
PhDs that explore how the skills required to teach at a college
level are developed. It examines the key issues that graduate
students face as they learn to teach effectively when in fact they
are still learning and being taught. Featuring contributions from
over thirty graduate students from a variety of disciplines at
Indiana University, Teaching as if Learning Matters allows these
students to explore this topic from their own unique perspectives.
They reflect on the importance of teaching to them personally and
professionally, telling of both successes and struggles as they
learn and embrace teaching for the first time in higher education.

The first modern survey of the long and fascinating history of the
various ideas and theories about the cause of scurvy, the
nutritional deficiency disease that has caused (with the exception
of famine) the most human suffering in recorded history. Professor
Carpenter documents the arguments that led to the numerous theories
about the disease and eventually to the isolation and synthesis of
vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and illustrates how the changing ideas
about scurvy reflected the scientific and medical beliefs of
different periods in history. The author also examines the modern
claims for the use of very high levels of vitamin C to bring about
a state of super-health, and he analyses the most important
evidence for and against this practice. This fascinating story in
the history of science and medicine will be of interest to the
historian, scientist and the general reader.
