Polymer composites were introduced for the aerospace industry as light, strong, stiff materials, and adopted by the construction and automobile industries, among others. Meanwhile, composite materials have been introduced to fulfill the uses that these conventional materials could not, such as in extreme environments. The research for new composites includes not only new polymer systems, but metals, ceramics and intermetallic systems as well. This volume contains a selection of recent work by leading researchers in micromechanics on the topics of prediction of overall properties of elastic, perfectly bonded systems, problems associated with inelastic deformation of the phase, debonding at interfaces and growth of distributed damage. Many familiar aspects of mechanical behavior, such as fatigue, fracture, strength and buckling, etc. have been reexamined and adapted for these new systems.

Commissioned by the Swiss Federation of Manual Medicine and under the patronage of FIMM (International Federation of Manual Medicine) we conducted an international seminar during the week following the 7th Inter national Congress of FIMM (Zuerich/Switzerland - September 1983). Thirty Manual Medicine experts had come together in the education center of the Cloister Fischingen secluded in the eastern part of Switzerland and away from any city life, to discuss in a week long seminar the status of Man ual Medicine. Working together in the form of several groups, the following points were emphasized: - terminology - diagnostic criteria (are Manual Medicine findings reproducible?) - therapeutic interventions (degree of congruity of treatment plans) The participants demonstrated great enthusiasm and commitment, and so it was possible to have the content of the individual group's discussion com municated to and presented for further scrutiny to all participants during the seminar week. As members of the organizing committee and as the editors of this publica tion, we hope to help establish a more standardized international terminolo gy concerning the field of Manual Medicine. As this clinical trial (investigating the diagnostic reliability and the therapeu tic efficiency of MM) shows, factors such as terminology, diagnostic criteria and therapeutic plans are a prerequisite for multi-center studies.

The field of composite materials has seen substantial development in the past decade, New composite systems are being continually developed for various applications. Among such systems are metal, intermetallic, and superalloy matrix composites, carbon-carbon composites as well as polymer matrix composites. At the same time, a new discipline has emerged of active or smart materials, which are often constructed as composite or heterogeneous media and structures. One unifying theme in these diverse systems is the influence that uncoupled and coupled eigenfields or transformation fields exert on the various types of overall response, as well as on the respective phase responses. Problems of this kind are currently considered by different groups which may not always appreciate the similarities of the problems involved. The purpose of the IUTAM Symposium on Transformation Problems in Composite and Active Materials held in Cairo, Egypt from March 10 to 12, 1997 was to bring together representatives of the different groups so that they may interact and explore common aspects of these seemingly different problem areas. New directions in micromechanics research in both composite and active materials were also explored in the symposium. Specifically, invited lectures in the areas of inelastic behavior of composite materials, shape memory effects, functionally graded materials, transformation problems in composite structures, and adaptive structures were delivered and discussed during the three-day meeting. This book contains the printed contributions to the IUTAM Symposium.

This book contains papers contributed to the IUTAM Symposium on Transformation Problems in Composite and Active Materials which was held in Cairo, Egypt in March 1997. The chapters address uncoupled and coupled transformation problems in composite and smart materials and their structures. The book is organized into six sections covering the following subjects: inelastic behaviour of composite materials, shape memory effects, functionally graded materials, transformation problems in composite structures, adaptive structures, and elasticity issues. Although the field of composite materials has seen substantial development in the past two decades, new composite systems are continually being developed for various applications. Among such systems are metal, intermetallic, and superalloy matrix composites, carbon-carbon composites, and polymer matrix composites. The field of smart materials, on the other hand, is relatively new, but has also seen important developments recently. These two seemingly different fields have often been addressed in separate books, journals, and technical meetings. The present book realizes and addresses the similarities of the uncoupled and coupled transformation fields involved in both composite and smart materials. Outstanding researchers from the different groups active in mechanics of composite and smart materials have contributed papers which explore the common aspects of these materials and new directions in micromechanics research in both areas. Researchers active in the areas of mechanics of composite and smart materials will find this book very useful in addressing recent developments in these areas.

There are not many biological disciplines, which have experienced such fast development as have human and veterinary mycology in recent years. In the initial stages organisms, whoEe influence on man has not b~en determined, have been investigated on a purely academic basis and with particular reference to their taxonomic position. As recently as the thirties, the pathogenic agents of dermatophytoses were known collectively under such names as "Micro sporum" and "Trichophyton". Such designation occurred in most medical and veterinary literature irrespective of the fact that fungi are organisms of a highly complicated and most variable morphological structure, an intricate development and a distribution over a diversity of environments, infecting hosts of the animal kingdom. The greater the credit, therefore, that can be attributed to the pioneers of mycological research, the founders of modern mycology such as R. Sabouraud, M. Langeron, R. Vanbreuseghem, Ch. W. Emmons, who elucidated the importance of mycology in human and veterinary medicine. To one of them, Professor R. V anbreuseghem, this book has been dedicated. In spite of these tremendous efforts, many aspects of the biology and ecology of fungi have still remained obscure in view of the complicated develop ment throughout the various phases, the variability of species and the large numbers of purely saprophytic species occurring in nature. At the present, mycoparasitic infection in man and animals is of utmost importance.

1m Auftrag der Schweizerischen Arztegesellschaft fUr Manuelle Medizin und unter der Schirmherrschaft der FIMM (Federation Internationales des Medicine Manuelle) haben wir im AnschluB an den 7. Internationalen Kon- greB der FIMM in Zurich (September 1983) eine internationale Seminar- arbeitswoche durchgefUhrt. 30 manualmedizinische Experten aus 12 Uindern haben wahrend einer Wo- che in der Abgeschiedenheit des Bildungszentrums Kloster Fischingen in der Ostschweiz den Stand der manuellen Medizin diskutiert. In Form von Gruppenarbeit wurden folgende Schwerpunkte gesetzt: - Terminologie, - Bewertung der Befunde (sind die manual-medizinischen Befunde rep- duzierbar?), - Therapieprogramm (Grad der Ubereinstimmung bei Festlegung der T- rapie). Dank dem groBen Engagement der Teilnehmer war es m6g1ich, bereits wah- rend der Arbeitswoche die diskutierten Erfahrungen in Worte zu fassen und dem gesamten Gremium am Ende des jeweiligen thematischen Abschnitts zur allgemeinen Diskussion vorzustellen. Als Organisatoren dieser Arbeitswoche und als Herausgeber der vorliegen- den Publikation hoffen wir, zur Erarbeitung einer standardisierten interna- tionalen manualmedizinischen Terminologie gemeinsam einen Beitrag zu leisten. Denkt man an die geplante klinische Studie zur Evaluation der diagnosti- schen Zuverlassigkeit und therapeutischen Effizienz der Manuellen Medi- zin, dann ist die Ubereinstimmung in Terminologie, Befundbeschreibung so- wie im therapeutischen Vorgehen eine Voraussetzung zur DurchfUhrung auch multizentrischer klinischer Studien. Die manuelle Medizin kann umfassende Anerkennung bei den medizini- schen Fakultaten nur dann erreichen, wenn sie sich erstens einer allgemein verstandlichen Sprache bedient und zweitens, wenn sie die Methodik zu- nachst in den eigenen Reihen uberpriift und anschlieBend den Schulmedizi- nern vorlegt.

Dieses Lehrbuch entstand aus den Grund- und Spezialvorlesungen, die die Verfasser schon seit einer Reihe von J ahren am Lehrstuhl fiir Physikalische Chemie der Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultat der Karls-Universitat in Prag hal- ten, und aus den Vorlesungen, die der erste von ihnen an der Universitat von Southampton in England hielt. Die Autoren waren bestrebt, bei kleinem Umfang moglichst viel Stoff zu erfassen, darit das Buch als Ausgangspunkt fiir das Studium von Monographien und Originalliteratur dienen konne. Mit Riicksicht auf die knappe Fassung wird die Originalliteratur nicht syste- matisch zitiert; an vielen Stellen ware ein vollstandiges Literaturverzeichnis langer als die Darstellung selbst. Am Ende des Buches folgt ein nach Kapiteln geordnetes Verzeichnis der einschlagigen Monographien und Referate, in dem der Leser die gesuchten Zitate findet. Die Abbildungen und die Zahlenwerte in den Tabellen geben die grundlegen- den GesetzmaBigkeiten wieder. Trotzdem waren die Verfasser bemiiht, die zuver- lassigsten Daten anzufiihren und schematische Veranschaulichungen der Kurven- verlaufe, die leicht zu Fehlern fiihren konnen, moglichst zu vermeiden. Bei den iibernommenen Zahlenwerten und Abbildungen ist stets die Herkunft zitiert. In diesem Lehrbuch werden keine praktischen Hinweise fiir Laborarbeiten und fiir die Anwendung der elektrochemischen Methoden gegeben, da ja eine ausreichende Menge an physikalisch-chemischen und analytischen Handbiichern zur Verfiigung steht.

Dieser Vortragsband legt das weiterentwickelte Ergebnis eines international en Symposions (Lichtental zu Baden-Baden, Oktober 1985) vor, das sich mit den Problemen beschiiftigte, die dadurch aufgeworfen worden sind, daB theoretische und klinische Fakten dafUr sprechen, daB der Kopfgelenkbereich in Physiologie und Pathophysiologie eine eigensUindige RoUe spielt und daB es not wendig erscheint, die bisher als Einheit betrachtete Halswirbel saule schiirfer als bisher in zwei struktureU und funktioneU vonein ander zu trennende Abschnitte zu untergliedern. Die anatomi schen, gelenkmechanischen, muskelphysiologischen und neuro physiologischen Fakten des Kopfgelenkbereichs sind so augenfal lig und tiefgreifend von denen der mittleren und unteren Halswir belsaule unterschieden, daB es geradezu erstaunlich ware, wenn diese Unterschiede nicht auch im klinischen Bereich ihren Nieder schlag fanden. Standig wiederholte Beobachtungen und therapeutische Empirie in der manueUen Medizin und ihren Vorformen lenkten schon seit langem die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Besonderheiten des Kopfge lenkbereichs. Es wurden spezieUe diagnostische und therapeutische Methoden entwickelt, die die Erfahrungen konkretisierten und vertieften. Das zu Tage geforderte empirische Material war so gleichartig und reproduzierbar, daB auch bei unvoreingenommener, kritischer Uberpriifung eine unreflektierte Negation dies er Fakten ungerecht fertigt sein muBte. Es steUte sich vielmehr heraus, daB sich hier ein Neuland fUr Theorie und Praxis der "zervikalen Syndrome" auftat, das zu intensiver wissenschaftlicher Beschaftigung herausforderte."
