Born out of a project of the IUPAC's committee on Medicinal
Chemistry and Drug Development, this reference addresses past and
current strategies for successful drug analog development,
extending the previously published volume by nine new analog
classes and eight case studies. Like its precursor, this volume
also contains a general section discussing universally applicable
strategies for analog discovery and development. Spanning a wide
range of therapeutic fields and chemical classes, the two volumes
together constitute the first systematic approach to drug analog
development.
Most drugs are analogue drugs. There are no general rules how a new
drug can be discovered, nevertheless, there are some observations
which help to find a new drug, and also an individual story of a
drug discovery can initiate and help new discoveries. Volume III is
a continuation of the successful book series with new examples of
established and recently introduced drugs.

The region of Alsace, located between the hereditary enemies of France and Germany, served as a trophy of war four times between 1870-1945. With each shift, French and German officials sought to win the allegiance of the local populace. In response to these pressures, Alsatians invoked regionalism-articulated as a political language, a cultural vision, and a community of identity-not only to define and defend their own interests against the nationalist claims of France and Germany, but also to push for social change, defend religious rights, and promote the status of the region within the larger national community. Alsatian regionalism however, was neither unitary nor unifying, as Alsatians themselves were divided politically, socially, and culturally. The author shows that the Janus-faced character of Alsatian regionalism points to the ambiguous role of regional identity in both fostering and inhibiting loyalty to the nation. Finally, the author uses the case of Alsace to explore the traditional designations of French civic nationalism versus German ethnic nationalism and argues for the strong similarities between the two countries' conceptions of nationhood.

Among the symmetrical distributions with an infinite domain, the most popular alternative to the normal variant is the logistic distribution as well as the Laplace or the double exponential distribution, which was first introduced in 1774. The three volumes VIII/1A, B, C document the state of the art of "Laser Physics and Applications." Scientific trends and related technological aspects are considered by compiling results and conclusions from phenomenology, observation and experience.
