The essays in this collection examine religion, politics, and
commerce in Scotland during a time of crisis and turmoil.
Contributors look at the effect of the Union on Scottish trade and
commerce, the Scottish role in tobacco and sugar plantations,
Robert Burns's early poetry on his planned emigration to Jamaica,
and Scottish anti-abolitionists.
This book approaches Hobbes's philosophy from a completely new
perspective: his creativity. Creativity is the production of
something which experts consider to be original, valuable and of
high quality. James Hamilton explores Hobbes's creativity by
focusing on his development, personality, and motivation in the
context of his culture and environment, and on the ways in which he
thought creatively, as inferred from his writings. Identification
of the ideas which Hobbes drew upon is an important part of the
study for two reasons. First, they are necessary to determine which
of Hobbes's ideas and theories are original and which are not.
Second, analysis of his creativity requires an understanding of the
ideas from which he drew. Hamilton concludes that Hobbes became a
great philosopher because of his creative virtuosity.
Smart women don’t grow older. They grow younger. A book of hope,
Younger Next Year for Women shows you how to become functionally
younger for the next five to ten years, and continue to live
thereafter with newfound vitality. Learn how the Younger Next Year
plan of following “Harry’s Rulesâ€â€”a program of exercise,
diet, and maintaining emotional connections—will not only help
you turn back your physical biological clock, but will improve
memory, cognition, mood, and more. In two new chapters, prominent
neurologist Allan Hamilton explains how the program directly
affects your brain—all the way down to the cellular level—while
Chris Crowley, in his inimitable voice, gives the personal side of
the story. In other words, how to live brilliantly for the three
decades or more after menopause. The results will be amazing.
The goal of this book is to serve both as a practical technical
reference and a resource for gaining a fuller understanding of the
state of the art of spacecraft momentum control systems,
specifically looking at control moment gyroscopes (CMGs). As a
result, the subject matter includes theory, technology, and systems
engineering. The authors combine material on system-level
architecture of spacecraft that feature momentum-control systems
with material about the momentum-control hardware and software.
This also encompasses material on the theoretical and algorithmic
approaches to the control of space vehicles with CMGs. In essence,
CMGs are the attitude-control actuators that make contemporary
highly agile spacecraft possible. The rise of commercial Earth
imaging, the advances in privately built spacecraft (including
small satellites), and the growing popularity of the subject matter
in academic circles over the past decade argues that now is the
time for an in-depth treatment of the topic. CMGs are augmented by
reaction wheels and related algorithms for steering all such
actuators, which together comprise the field of spacecraft momentum
control systems. The material is presented at a level suitable for
practicing engineers and those with an undergraduate degree in
mechanical, electrical, and/or aerospace engineering.
Knowledge Discovery and Measures of Interest is a reference book
for knowledge discovery researchers, practitioners, and students.
The knowledge discovery researcher will find that the material
provides a theoretical foundation for measures of interest in data
mining applications where diversity measures are used to rank
summaries generated from databases. The knowledge discovery
practitioner will find solid empirical evidence on which to base
decisions regarding the choice of measures in data mining
applications. The knowledge discovery student in a senior
undergraduate or graduate course in databases and data mining will
find the book is a good introduction to the concepts and techniques
of measures of interest. In Knowledge Discovery and Measures of
Interest, we study two closely related steps in any knowledge
discovery system: the generation of discovered knowledge; and the
interpretation and evaluation of discovered knowledge. In the
generation step, we study data summarization, where a single
dataset can be generalized in many different ways and to many
different levels of granularity according to domain generalization
graphs. In the interpretation and evaluation step, we study
diversity measures as heuristics for ranking the interestingness of
the summaries generated. The objective of this work is to introduce
and evaluate a technique for ranking the interestingness of
discovered patterns in data. It consists of four primary goals: To
introduce domain generalization graphs for describing and guiding
the generation of summaries from databases. To introduce and
evaluate serial and parallel algorithms that traverse the domain
generalization space described by the domain generalization graphs.
To introduce and evaluate diversity measures as heuristic measures
of interestingness for ranking summaries generated from databases.
To develop the preliminary foundation for a theory of
interestingness within the context of ranking summaries generated
from databases. Knowledge Discovery and Measures of Interest is
suitable as a secondary text in a graduate level course and as a
reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.
This book presents recent advances in quality measures in data
mining.

AI2000 was the 13th in the series of biennial Arti cial
Intelligence conf- ences sponsored by the Canadian Society for
Computational Studies of Int- ligence/Soci et e canadienne pour l'
etude de l'intelligence par ordinateur. For the rst time, the
conference was held in conjunction with four other conferences.
TwooftheseweretheannualconferencesoftwootherCanadiansocieties, Gra-
icsInterface(GI2000)andVisionInterface(VI2000),
withwhichthisconference has been associated in recent years. The
other two conferences were the Int- national Symposium on Robotics
(ISR2000) and the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems
conference (IRIS2000). It is our hope that the overall ex- rience
will be enriched by this conjunction of conferences. The Canadian
AI conference has a 25 year tradition of attracting Canadian and
international papers of high quality from a variety of AI research
areas. All papers submitted to the conference received three
independent reviews. - proximately one third were accepted for
plenary presentation at the conference. A journal version of the
best paper of the conference will be invited to appear in
Computational Intelligence. The conference attracted submissions
from six continents, and this diversity is represented in these
proceedings. The overall framework is similar to that of the last
conference, AI'98. Plenary presentations were given of 25 papers,
organized into sessions based on topics. Poster pres- tations were
given for an additional 13 papers. A highlight of the conference
continues to be the invited speakers. Three speakers, Eugene
Charniak, Eric _ Horvitz, and Jan Zytkow, were our guests this
year.
This book is an introduction to Prolog (GBPrQgramming in ~ic). It
presents the basic foundations of Prolog and basic and fundamental
programming methods. This book is written for programmers familiar
with other programming languages, as well as for novices in
computer science, willing to have an original introduction to
programming. The approach adopted in this book is thus based on
methodological elements together with some pragmatic aspects. The
book is composed of two parts. In the fIrst part the major aspects
of programming in Prolog are presented step by step. Each new
aspect is illustrated by short examples and exercises. The second
part is composed of more developed examples, which are often games,
that illustrate major aspects of artifIcial intelligence. More
advanced books are given in the bibliography and will allow the
reader to deepen his or her know ledge of Prolog. Prolog was first
designed in France at OJ.A., Marseille, with a specific syntax. We
have adopted here a more common notation, defIned at Edinburgh,
which tends to be an implicit norm. At the end of each chapter of
the fIrst part, there are exercises that the reader is invited to
do and to test on his or her machine. Complete answers are given in
Appendix A, at the end of the book.
Congratulations, you are about to get younger! Dr. Henry Lodge
provides the science. Chris Crowley provides the motivation. And
through their New York Times bestselling program, you'll discover
how to put off 70 percent of the normal problems of
aging--weakness, sore joints, bad balance--and eliminate 50 percent
of serious illness and injury. Plus, prominent neurologist Allan
Hamilton now explains how following "Harry's Rules" for diet,
exercise, and staying emotionally connected directly affects your
brain--all the way down to the cellular level. The message is
simple: Learn to train for the next third of your life, and you'll
have a ball.
Mindful work with horses, says neurosurgeon Allan J. Hamilton, can
enlighten the human handler as much as it benefits the horse.
Evolving over 30 million years to become the quintessential prey
animal, equines have developed acute right-brain survival skills,
such as leadership, awareness, empathy, and cooperation. In
particular the horse has finely honed abilities to lead,
communicate, and connect not with words, but with the vital
emotional energy described in the Buddhist tradition as chi. When
we learn the language of chi, we become more effective as leaders,
more attuned to others, and more joyful as human beings."Zen Mind,
Zen Horse" begins by examining how the equine and human brains
function, often related to their respective roles as prey and
predator. Going on to draw insights and wisdom from spiritual
traditions such as Zen Buddhism, Ayurvedic healing, and Yaqui
shamanism and from the great horse cultures of the Mongolians,
Bedouins, and Native Americans, Dr. Hamilton shows the importance
of developing right-brain awareness and quieting the left-brain
dominance of our Western brains.Seamlessly integrating spiritual
principles and practical applications, Dr. Hamilton shows how to
apply the chi-based approach to every aspect of horse-human
communication, including: - The act of grooming as a spiritual
practice- Techniques of alpha-horse leadership that make others
gladly follow- Gaze, stance, and gesture as training tools- The
irresistible power of infinite patienceUltimately, the author shows
the depth of insight humans gain into themselves, as well as
horses, after working with these amazing animals.
‘His passion was for glory only, and in that he was insatiable’ Although written over four hundred years after Alexander’s death, Arrian’s Campaigns of Alexander is the most reliable account of the man and his achievements we have. Arrian’s own experience as a military commander gave him unique insights into the life of the world’s greatest conqueror. He tells of Alexander’s violent suppression of the Theban rebellion, his total defeat of Persia, and his campaigns through Egypt, India and Babylon – establishing new cities and destroying others in his path. While Alexander emerges from this record as an unparalleled and charismatic leader, Arrian succeeds brilliantly in creating an objective and fully rounded portrait of a man of boundless ambition, who was exposed to the temptations of power and worshipped as a god in his own lifetime. Aubrey de Sélincourt’s vivid translation is accompanied by J. R. Hamilton’s introduction, which discusses Arrian’s life and times, his synthesis of other classical sources and the composition of Alexander’s army. The edition also includes maps, a list for further reading and a detailed index.
