The world of work and organization has become increasingly
demanding and turbulent as firms respond to forces of
globalization, the introduction of new technology, requirements to
increase revenues while decreasing costs, and the needs of a more
diverse workforce, while building organizational capability. Most
organizations can acquire or copy technology, manufacturing
processes, products and business strategies. However human resource
management practices and organizational culture are difficult to
copy and represent a truly unique competitive advantage.. Managers
are coming to believe that the most important organizational
resource is human.
This collection presents research evidence and company examples
developed over the past decade showing how to create organizations
that add value to investors, customers and employees. It first
illustrates why and how human resource management practices become
a competitive advantage. These practices are also reviewed in an
international context, an increasingly important reality as
business become more global.
Special attention is devoted to building organizational capability
while simultaneously fostering employee well-being, learning and
development. In addition, support for the link between human
resource management practices and organizational performance is
summarized using examples of effective human resource management
practices. This collection lays out specific ways in which people
can be mobilized to satisfy both organizational and individual
needs.

The Sixth Army Materials Technology Conference, IICeramics for High
Performance Applications-II I-Reliabilityll , was co-sponsored by
the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and the U. S.
Department of Energy, Office of Transportation Programs . The
program highlighted all issues relevant to the reliability of
ceramics in advanced systems. The conference emphasized
programmatic reviews of the major efforts on ceramic gas turbine
technology, on an international basis. The conference showed how
ceramic design, materials development, materials processing, NDE,
and component systems testing are being integrated and iterated in
specific engine development programs . Further , the conference
promoted inter change among the various technical disciplines
working in the advanced turbine and heat engine areas. This volume
will join its earlier companions, Ceramics for High Performance A
lications (1974), and Ceramics for High Performance Applications-II
1 7 ,in chronicling the rapid progress being made in the applicaton
of ceramics to the very demanding service environ ment of gas
turbine and piston engines. At the last meeting of this series at
Newport, R t, in March 1977, successful high temperature tests of
ceramic components in test rigs were described.
Work hours has become a 'hot topic'. This volume examines the
effects of work hours on individual, family and organizational
health. It considers why some people work long hours and the
potential costs and benefits of this investment. Some work long
hours out of necessity, others willingly. Interestingly, most
people, however, want to work fewer hours than they now do. One's
motives for working long hours (the why) and one's attitudes and
behaviours while working (the how) emerge as critical factors in
the link between work hours and well-being.Contributions from
experts from six countries address workaholism, the distinction
between passion and addiction to work, 'loving one's job', the role
of technology as an enabler of long work hours, consequences of
fatigue from over-work, strategies for short-term recovery from
long hours, and initiatives for enriching one's quality of life.
Coming to grips with work hours requires difficult choices by
individuals, families, organizations and society at large. This
collection will be of value to managers and professionals concerned
about people, and academics, students, researchers and policy
makers interested in ways work can be meaningful, decent rather
than debilitating.
St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to

On the Open Road, these Women Keep on Truckin'
Say "trucker," and you probably don't think of someone like Ella
Marie Blackford. But this sassy, savvy female truck driver is one
of KDX Transport's best haulers. And she won't let the
male-dominated culture of truckers get her down.
Trekking hundreds of miles, it's just her, her cargo, and a close
friendship with one of the rare sisters of the road-Sara
Sommerfield. From the comfy perch of their cabins, they get a
unique glimpse of the American landscape-and meet in diners and
truck stops to discuss it all. Then a bizarre chance encounter
interrupts Ella's predictable routine by putting her face to face
with her thirteen-year-old cousin, Noel. The girl's bad decisions
and worse relationships have led her down an unhealthy path-one
that could ultimately lead to destruction. Suddenly, the cab of
Ella's truck becomes a classroom for the lessons this troubled
young girl never learned about life, love, and self-respect. And
inside this roving behemoth is the insight that could help her get
back on the right path.
A realistic portrait of the challenges and triumphs of being a
woman in the macho world of trucking, Woman's Work is a moving
account-literally-of this unique experience. Frank, funny, and at
times maddening, it's a charming story that shows girls of all ages
that women's work can mean just about anything.
