Where exactly does the South begin and end? Current maps are too
rigid to account for the ways Black people have built the South
while being simultaneously excluded from it. Drawing from the
different ways Black artists in the 2-5-2 area code in North
Carolina use "vibe" as a mode of knowing and communication, author
Corey J. Miles illustrates how Black feeling and unfeeling offer
entry points into the contemporary South that challenge static and
monolithic notions of the region. Placing the local artists in
conversation with other southern cultural creators such as 2
Chainz, Rod Wave, and Rapsody, these ethnographic narratives
demonstrate that there are multiple Souths, with overlapping and
distinct commitments to working through pain, sound, and belonging.
In Vibe: The Sound and Feeling of Black Life in the American South,
Miles narrates how southern Black sound, feeling, and being is
constantly policed, surveilled, and criminalized. In doing so, he
re-narrates the region as the "carceral South," to capture the ways
people in the South and beyond can feel the emotional weight of the
criminalization of Blackness. Pain music, a subgenre of trap music,
is used to take the listener to moments of violence to allow them
to hear the desires, anger, and silences that bind Black life in
community. Through conceptions of ratchet, hood, and ghetto, Black
artists turn away from respectable images and unmap the South. In
trap music, they move the South to a space where multiple modes of
being find respect and care.
Up close, Inauguration Day 2021 looked like any other-the chief
justice of the US Supreme Court administering the oath of office to
the new president on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. But pull the
lens back and this was anything but a typical election and
transition of power. In A Return to Normalcy?, Larry Sabato, Kyle
Kondik, and J. Miles Coleman bring together respected journalists,
analysts, and scholars to examine every facet of the stunning 2020
election and its aftermath, and how these events will impact
American politics moving forward. In frank, accessible prose, each
author offers insight that goes beyond the headlines and dives into
the underlying forces and shifts that drove the election from its
earliest developments to its chaotic conclusion. A Return to
Normalcy? will be an indispensable read for political junkies and
all students of American politics.
Larry Sabato, one of the leading experts in American politics, will
bring together respected journalists and academics from across the
political spectrum to examine every facet of the 2022 midterm
election, and what its development and outcome will mean for the
nation moving forward. In frank, accessible prose, each author
offers insight that goes beyond the headlines, and dives into the
underlying forces and shifts that drove the election from its
earliest developments to its dramatic conclusion. Following
Sabato’s introductory analysis, the contributors will provide a
comprehensive review of everything in play during the 2022 midterms
and look ahead to the 2024 presidential campaign.
WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES: Beginning with a discussion of the
magnitude of the problem of domestic violence, the authors present
a fictional narrative of "Suzanne," whose relationship with her
intimate partner dissolves into abuse and violence, both physical
and emotional. What follows is expert commentary on her story by
law enforcement, a judge and former district attorney, victim
advocate, therapist, and survivor, which provide a unique
exploration of the tragedy of abuse and potential means by which it
can be addressed. The main theme of the book is the tendency to
"blame the victim" for staying in an abusive relationship and the
need to understand why leaving can be so difficult and dangerous.
Over the last decade, interest in mycoplasmas has been greatly sti-
lated by the spread of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP),
caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides SC, in Europe and
Africa and the discovery of a possible association between
mycoplasmas and AIDS. During this period there has also been a
recognition by control authorities and int- national organizations,
including the Office International des Epizooties, that mycoplasmas
are major causes of economic loss in livestock and continue to be a
problem in humans as a result of a range of chronic respiratory and
urogenital diseases. However, it is likely that the true
significance of my- plasmas is still underestimated because of the
difficulties in working with these extremely fastidious
microorganisms. Advances in such laboratory technology as DNA
amplification has enabled the detection of unrecoverable
mycoplasmas in tissue samples and this will provide us with a
better understanding of their role in disease. Important
developments have also been seen in more conv- tional areas such as
serological tests and media formulation enabling improved recovery
and identification. Mycoplasma Protocols provides in a single
volume up-to-date and easy-- follow methods for the detection,
isolation, identification, and characterization of mycoplasmas,
with a major emphasis on those of medical and veterinary
significance. It also includes biochemical, genetic, and molecular
techniques that will form the basis of understanding pathogenicity
and, particularly, - hesion to host cells.

Sexual Happiness in Marriage is for those who are missing the
fulfillment God intended marriage to provide and who are unaware of
the true joy and love that can be achieved through understanding
basic sexual principles. In this frank, honest, discussion of the
role of sex in marriage, Dr. Herbert J. Miles thoroughly and
carefully examines attitudes and techniques essential to sexual
compatibility. Those who read it and follow its suggestions will be
able to analyze and correct sexual problems in their marriages.
Topics include: - sexual expectations - first sexual experiences -
sexual adjustment - contraceptives - sexual problems - keeping
marriage fresh and exciting.
The volume presents the seminal articles in the economic analysis
of the criminal law. The articles include the path-breaking
theoretical economic analyses of criminal behavior and the leading
empirical tests of these theories. The volume also contains the
most prominent economic analyses of the substantive doctrines of
criminal law and criminal procedure. Other articles present
influential applications of economic concepts and evidence to
perennial issues in criminal law and criminal justice, such as gun
control, drug prohibition, and sentencing policy. An introduction
by the volume editors provides a comprehensive overview of the
works included. Economics of Criminal Law will be an essential
source of reference for scholars, graduate students in both law and
in economics, and practitioners.

Drawing on the author's unusual background as a seminarian turned
scientist and business executive, Boys of the Cloth presents a
unique analysis of the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church.
The book combines a first-hand account of seminary life during the
1960s-a period that turns out to be crucial for understanding the
crisis-with explorations of the history of the seminary system,
current scientific knowledge about abusive behavior, and the
Church's own investigations into the "epidemic" of abuse by its
priests. Through the interplay between these topics, two
paradoxical conclusions emerge. First, that the epidemic was caused
by an ancient reform intended to eradicate rather than encourage
clerical corruption. Second, that it was reversed by modern Church
policies with no obvious connection to sexual abuse. Boys of the
Cloth will transform your understanding of predatory behavior by
priests and of measures that will be crucial to prevent it.

Vegetation dynamics is an important subject. A knowledge and under
standing of it is central to the science of vegetation
management-in grassland, range and nature reserve management, and
in aspects of wildlife management, forestry and agricultural crop
production. It is also a large and diffuse subject. In a small book
such as this I had to be highly selective, and could not do equal
justice to all aspects. I have had therefore to condense many
examples, and more regrettably, many arguments. While I have tried
to present a broad selection of topics and examples, the content
inevitably reflects my own special interests and experience. The
study of vegetation and its dynamics does not lend itselfto neat
and tidy divisions, and the way of allotting material into
different chapters here is arbitrary. I have used Chapter I to
introduce a number of ideas, beginning with the nature of
vegetation in space, then passing to an introduction to the nature
of changes in vegetation with time, in particular those generally
known as successions. The book also contains a number of asides to
the text's central arguments; I hope the reader finds these
interesting rather than disconcerting."
A magical trip around the zodiac with some perceptive and
accessible astro-profiles of Pagan and Wiccan celebrities. An
insightful read that goes beyond Sun signs with new birth charts
coupled with biographical information plus many rarely seen photos.
The era in which they lived did not have the same freedoms which
many practitioners have today. These people blazed a trail for
everyone.
At age eleven, Michael Kenna developed his first roll of black and
white film in a makeshift darkroom at St. Joseph's College,
Upholland, the seminary he attended with the idea of becoming a
Catholic priest. Kenna abandoned his religious calling after
leaving the seminary, but his experiences there have continued to
inform his work for decades. These gorgeous, meditative photographs
were taken when Kenna returned to visit the now-shuttered school in
the early 2000s. All of the qualities that make Kenna's work so
appealing and evocative are here-richly nuanced tones, studies in
contrast, his ability to transform the ordinary into something
extraordinary. But Kenna is also revisiting a way of life that may
be disappearing-not only the, at times, ruthless discipline of the
British boarding school, but also the somber beauty of religious
practice. In page after page of richly toned images, Kenna's camera
captures the architecture of the school's built environment as well
as its spiritual architecture. Kenna's richly detailed biographical
essay about his experiences and observations at St. Joseph's reveal
much about the way Kenna thinks and works. A critical essay by
Vincent Miles focuses on the 110-year history of the college,
contextualizing Kenna's time there. At once captivating and
haunting, this series is truly one of the photographer's most
personal and powerful projects to date.
Welcome to the lives of Pamela Colman Smith (‘Pixie’) and Madge
Gill. Two very different women from contrasting backgrounds who
were born during the reign of Queen Victoria. Both are remembered
now for the interesting and unique individuals they were.
Celebrated and finding fame posthumously, Colman Smith is known
principally for her illustrations of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck and
Gill for her art, spiritual beliefs and second-sight. What binds
them together, aside from their being artists and unconventional
for their time, is how their lives were touched by the areas of
astrology, magic, psychic abilities and spiritualism. This book
looks at their lives and uses an astrological narrative to help
better understand what drove them and how they managed their
challenges and successes. Illustrated with photographs and images.
Aleister Crowley, Frieda, Lady Harris and Betty May were no
strangers to bohemian life; they embraced escapism, freedom and
remained true to their indomitable spirits rebelling against the
backdrop into which they were born. Through the art of natal
astrology, we can see what their motivations were including their
potential strengths and challenges. New research; some rarely seen
photographs and some new biographical information, coupled with an
astrological narrative lay at the heart of this book. Artists and
astrologers; bohemians, ceremonial magicians and Thelemites,
occultists, philosophers, Tarot historians and writers... welcome
to Crowley, Harris and May.
