Current Topics in Primate Vocal Communication (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): U. Jurgens, J. Newman, E. Zimmermann Current Topics in Primate Vocal Communication (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
U. Jurgens, J. Newman, E. Zimmermann
R4,355 Discovery Miles 43 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

More than 25 years ago, the first major review of primate communication appeared (Altmann, 1967). Since then, information on the communicative abilities of primates increased rapidly, resulting, 15 years later, in the appearance of the first volume in which signaling systems were analyzed in a broader variety of primate groups within an evolutionary perspective (Snowdon, Brown and Petersen, 1982). Seven years later, the first volume dedicated solely to primate vocal communication appeared (Todt, Goedeking and Symmes, 1988) and another four years later a volume followed in which nonverbal vocal communication in non-human primates and human infants was compared (Papousek, Jurgens and Papousek, 1992). None of these volumes, however, provided information about current technical advances in the field of bioacoustics, especially in digital sound analyzing systems, which offer primatologists, anthropologists and linguists nowadays a variety of rapid methods for analyzing human speech and non-human primate vocalizations in a quantitative and comparative way. Choosing the right method is difficult if a synopsis of these tools is lacking. Furthermore, information was particularly lacking on the natural signaling systems of two important primate groups, the prosimians and the apes. Likewise, new and unexpected insights into the ontogeny and evolution of vocal communication were gained during the past few years by the use of highly sophisticated sound analysis and statistical techniques.

"Sport, Spectacle, and NASCAR Nation" critically examines the complex intersections of sport, consumer culture, and contemporary U.S. politics. Based on extensive ethnographic research, the authors give a first-hand account of NASCAR's recent ascent into the North American sporting mainstream. Along the way, they explore the unique bond between NASCAR and conservative U.S. political movements--and their various Southern, Christian, militaristic, free-market alignments. Sport, Spectacle, and NASCAR Nation is a must read for students and scholars in cultural studies, sport studies, education, sociology, and political sciences, as well as those interested in promoting a less divisive sporting future.

Black Baseball, Black Business - Race Enterprise and the Fate of the Segregated Dollar (Hardcover): Roberta J Newman, Joel... Black Baseball, Black Business - Race Enterprise and the Fate of the Segregated Dollar (Hardcover)
Roberta J Newman, Joel Nathan Rosen; Contributions by Monte Irvin
R3,099 Discovery Miles 30 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Roberta J. Newman and Joel Nathan Rosen have written an authoritative social history of the Negro Leagues. This book examines how the relationship between black baseball and black businesses functioned, particularly in urban areas with significant African American populations--Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Newark, New York, Philadelphia, and more. Inextricably bound together by circumstance, these sports and business alliances faced destruction and upheaval.

Once Jackie Robinson and a select handful of black baseball's elite gained acceptance in Major League Baseball and financial stability in the mainstream economy, shock waves traveled throughout the black business world. Though the economic impact on Negro League baseball is perhaps obvious due to its demise, the impact on other black-owned businesses and on segregated neighborhoods is often undervalued if not outright ignored in current accounts. There have been many books written on great individual players who played in the Negro Leagues and/or integrated the Major Leagues. But Newman and Rosen move beyond hagiography to analyze what happens when a community has its economic footing undermined while simultaneously being called upon to celebrate a larger social progress. In this regard, "Black Baseball, Black Business" moves beyond the diamond to explore baseball's desegregation narrative in a critical and wide ranging fashion.

Gordon M. Cragg, David G. I. Kingston, David J. Newman
R6,206 Discovery Miles 62 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The approach to drug discovery from natural sources has yielded many important new pharmaceuticals inaccessible by other routes. In many cases the isolated natural product may not be an effective drug for any of several reasons, but it nevertheless may become a drug through chemical modification or have a novel pharmacophore for future drug design. In summarizing the status of natural products as cancer chemotherapeutics, Anticancer Agents from Natural Products, Second Edition covers the: History of each covered drug-a discussion of its mechanism on action, medicinal chemistry, synthesis, and clinical applications Potential for novel drug discovery through the use of genome mining as well as future developments in anticancer drug discovery Important biosynthetic approaches to "unnatural" natural products Anticancer Agents from Natural Products, Second Edition discusses how complex target-oriented synthesis-enabled by historic advances in methodology-has enormously expanded the scope of the possible. This book covers the current clinically used anticancer agents that are either natural products or are clearly derived from natural product leads. It also reviews drug candidates currently in clinical development since many of these will be clinically used drugs in the future. Examples include the drugs etoposide and teniposide derived from the lead compound podophyllotoxin; numerous analogs derived from taxol; topotecan, derived from camptothecin; and the synthetic clinical candidates, E7389 and HTI-286, developed from the marine leads, halichondrin B and hemiasterlin.

A Locker Room of Her Own - Celebrity, Sexuality, and Female Athletes (Hardcover): David C. Ogden, Joel Nathan Rosen A Locker Room of Her Own - Celebrity, Sexuality, and Female Athletes (Hardcover)
David C. Ogden, Joel Nathan Rosen; Foreword by Roberta J Newman
R3,058 Discovery Miles 30 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Profiles of superstar women athletes and the obstacles they face Essays by Lisa Doris Alexander, Kathleen A. Bishop, Angela J. Hattery, Lisa R. Neilson, Roberta J. Newman, Elizabeth O'Connell, Martha Reid, C. Oren Renick, Joel Nathan Rosen, Yvonne D. Sims, Earl Smith, Lea Robin Velez, and Kimberly Young Female athletes are too often perceived as interlopers in the historically maledominated world of sports. Obstacles specific to women are of particular focus in A Locker Room of Her Own. Race, sexual orientation, and the similar qualities ancillary to gender bear special exploration in how they impact an athlete's story. Central to this volume is the contention that women in their role as inherent outsiders are placed in a unique position even more complicated than the usual experiences of inequality and discord associated with race and sports. The contributors explore and critique the notion that in order to be considered among the pantheon of athletic heroes one cannot deviate from the traditional demographic profile, that of the white male. These essays look specifically and critically at the nature of gender and sexuality within the contested nexus of race, reputation, and sport. The collection explores the reputations of iconic and pioneering sports figures and the cultural and social forces that helped to forge their unique and often problematic legacies. Women athletes discussed in this volume include Babe Didrikson Zaharias; the women of the AAGPBL; Billie Jean King; Venus and Serena Williams; Marion Jones; Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova; Sheryl Swoopes; Florence Griffith Joyner; Roberta Gibb and Kathrine Switzer; and Danica Patrick. David C. Ogden, Pacific Junction, Iowa, is associate professor in the department of communications at University of Nebraska at Omaha. Joel Nathan Rosen, Allentown, Pennsylvania, is associate professor of sociology and Africana studies at Moravian College. They are coeditors of Reconstructing Fame: Sport, Race, and Evolving Reputations and Fame to Infamy: Race, Sport, and the Fall from Grace, both published by the University Press of Mississippi.

Sport, Spectacle, and NASCAR Nation critically interrogates stockcar racing's ascendance into the upper-echelon of the North American sporting popular. While most contributions to the public discourse gloss over NASCAR's exclusively white racial identity politics, its underlying patriarchal gender politics, its overtly conservative political commitment, its hyper-Christian orthodoxy, and its omnipresent commercialism, this book connects the dots and critically analyzes the problematic nature of this non-natural, strategically-orchestrated sporting spectacle.
