Osborne's work is the first history text to explore the sweep of California's past in relationship to its connections within the maritime world of the Pacific Basin. * Presents a provocative and original interpretation of the entire span of California history * Reveals how the area's Pacific Basin connections have shaped the Golden State's past * Refutes the widely held notion among historians that California was isolated before the onset of the American period in the mid-1800s * Represents the first text to draw on anthropologist Jon Erlandson's findings that California's first human inhabitants were likely prehistoric Asian seafarers who navigated the Pacific Rim coastline * Includes instructor resources in an online companion site: www.wiley.com/go/osborne

REFLECTIONS OF LIFE is a collection of lyrical poetry that germinates from the author's many conversations, experiences, observations and dreams. Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East - Struggles to Survive and Thrive (Hardcover): Robert K. Hitchcock, Alan J... Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East - Struggles to Survive and Thrive (Hardcover)
Robert K. Hitchcock, Alan J Osborn
R2,225 Discovery Miles 22 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Africa and the Middle East are undergoing dramatic environmental, demographic, economic, and political transformations. This volume turns the spotlight on 14 endangered cultures as examples of how diverse peoples are coping with these radical evolutions in the 21st century. Little-known groups such as the Ogoni of Nigeria, who face environmental degradation from multinational exploitation of oil resources and government collusion, are presented alongside well-known groups like the Kurds, some of whom have been displaced as a result of civil war and live beneath a repressive Iraqi regime. The issues, viewpoints, and solutions presented by chapter authors are often controversial, and the format allows students and interested readers to use critical-thinking skills as they gain knowledge of other cultures.

"Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East" is the only reference for the high school and public library that gives a unique perspective on the threats to and responses of these groups. Each chapter gives an overview of the group to provide a context for discussing the challenges they face. A helpful Resource Guide lists further reading, films and videos, Web Sites, and organizations. Maps and photos complement the text.

Bargaining and Markets (Hardcover): Martin J Osborne, Ariel Rubinstein Bargaining and Markets (Hardcover)
Martin J Osborne, Ariel Rubinstein
R2,767 Discovery Miles 27 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The formal theory of bargaining originated with John Nash's work in the early 1950s. This book discusses two recent developments in this theory. The first uses the tool of extensive games to construct theories of bargaining in which time is modeled explicitly. The second applies the theory of bargaining to the study of decentralized markets. Rather than surveying the field, the authors present a select number of models, each of which illustrates a key point. In addition, they give detailed proofs throughout the book. It uses a small number of models, rather than a survey of the field, to illustrate key points, and includes detailed proofs given as explanations for the models. The text has been class-tested in a semester-long graduate course.

Larkin, Ideology and Critical Violence - A Case of Wrongful Conviction (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): J. Osborne Larkin, Ideology and Critical Violence - A Case of Wrongful Conviction (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
J. Osborne
R1,425 Discovery Miles 14 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book aims to revolutionize Larkin studies by releasing his oeuvre from the biographical approach adopted by his champions and detractors alike. Both camps have conspired to substitute a poet of certitude, even to the point of bigotry, for an author who is actually "the" contemporary master of undecidability. His novels and poems sabotage conventional pieties regarding church, state, nationality, marriage, gender, race and capital; and in the process, play a central role in the cultural transition to postmodernist indeterminacy.

Cell Separation in Plants - Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Cell Separation in Plants - Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Daphne J. Osborne, Michael B. Jackson
R2,717 Discovery Miles 27 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This NATO Advanced Research Workshop held 25-30 September, 1988 at the Villa Gualino, Turin, Italy, was the first international meeting of its kind to be devoted solely to cell separation in plants. The partial or complete dissociation of one cell from another is an integral process of differentiation. Partial cell separations are basic physiological components of the overall programme of plant development. Complete cell separations are major events in the ripening of fruits, and the shedding of plant parts. Unscheduled cell separations commonly occur when tissues are subjected to pathogenic invasion. Environmental stresses too, evoke their own separation responses. Over the past five years much new knowledge has been acquired on the regulation of gene expression in specific stages of cell differentiation. Specific molecular markers have been identified that designate the competence of cells for achieving separation. Certain of the chemical signals (hormones, elicitors) that must be emitted or perceived by cells to initiate and sustain separation, are now known to us, and the resulting cell wall changes have come under close chemical scrutiny. The Turin meeting was a focus for those currently involved in such investigations. It assessed factors controlling cell separation in a wide spectrum of different cell types under a variety of conditions.

Hormones, Signals and Target Cells in Plant Development (Paperback): Daphne J. Osborne, Michael T. McManus Hormones, Signals and Target Cells in Plant Development (Paperback)
Daphne J. Osborne, Michael T. McManus
R1,136 Discovery Miles 11 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Meristematic cells in plants become the many different types of cells found in a mature plant. This is achieved by a selective response to chemical signals both from neighbouring cells and distant tissues. It is these responses that shape the plant, its time of flowering, the sex of its flowers, its length of survival or progress to senescence and death. How do plants achieve this? This treatise addresses this question using well-chosen examples to illustrate the concept of target cells. The authors discuss how each cell has the ability to discriminate between different chemical signals, determining which it will respond to and which it will ignore. The regulation of gene expression through signal perception and signal transduction is at the core of this selectivity and the Target Cell concept. This volume will serve as a valuable reference for all researchers working in the field of plant developmental biology.

Coastal Sage - Peter Douglas and the Fight to Save California's Shore (Hardcover): Thomas J. Osborne Coastal Sage - Peter Douglas and the Fight to Save California's Shore (Hardcover)
Thomas J. Osborne
R2,553 Discovery Miles 25 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There are moments when we forget how fortunate we are to have the California coast. The state is home to 1,100 miles of uninterrupted coastline defined by long stretches of beach and jagged rocky cliffs. Coastal Sage chronicles the career and accomplishments of Peter Douglas, the longest-serving executive director of the California Coastal Commission. For nearly three decades, Douglas fought to keep the California coast public, prevent overdevelopment, and safeguard habitat. In doing so, Douglas emerged as a leading figure in the contemporary American environmental movement and influenced public conservation efforts across the country. He coauthored California's foundational laws pertaining to shoreline management and conservation: Proposition 20 and the California Coastal Act. Many of the political battles to save the coast from overdevelopment and secure public access are revealed for the first time in this study of the leader who was at once a visionary, warrior, and coastal sage.
