This volume contains the papers presented at the Third
International Conference on Thin-Walled Structures, Cracow, Poland
on June 5-7, 2001.
There has been a substantial growth in knowledge in the field of
Thin-Walled Structures over the past few decades. Lightweight
structures are in widespread use in the Civil Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical, Automobile, Chemical and
Offshore Engineering fields. The development of new processes, new
methods of connections, new materials has gone hand-in-hand with
the evolution of advanced analytical methods suitable for dealing
with the increasing complexity of the design work involved in
ensuring safety and confidence in the finished products.
Of particular importance with regard to the analytical process is
the growth in use of the finite element method. This method, about
40 years ago, was confined to rather specialist use, mainly in the
aeronautical field, because of its requirements for substantial
calculation capacity. The development over recent years of
extremely powerful microcomputers has ensured that the application
of the finite element method is now possible for problems in all
fields of engineering, and a variety of finite element packages
have been developed to enhance the ease of use and the availability
of the method in the engineering design process.
This book covers the growing interest in weight and cost-conscious
design of structures across a range of engineering applications. It
discusses linear and sheet structural components, and is concerned
with the development of a powerful approach to the analysis of
shell mechanics.
The environment in which human beings live is complex and we may encounter many different potentially toxic chemical substances during the course of our lives. These xenobiotic agents may invade the living system in the form of environmental pollutants, in the diet, as pharmaceutically administered compounds or even as chemical weapons and it is becoming widely recognised that free radicals are often involved in this toxicity. The book covers all aspects of toxic agents in the environment from their detection to their effects. Final year undergraduates and postgraduates studying toxicology, biochemistry, cell biology or environmental science will find this book valuable reading, whilst researchers in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and public health laboratories will appreciate it as a comprehensive reference.
This book analyses the nature of the contemporary racial state,
exploring issues such as the nature of postraciality, racial
neoliberalism, the state of multiculturalism and whiteness,
alongside the functioning of state institutions and policy
concerning the military, education, community surveillance, asylum
and extradition.
The church in the West is rediscovering the fact that God cares deeply for the poor. More and more, churches and individual Christians are looking for ways to practice economic discipleship, but it's hard to make progress when we are blind to our own entanglement in our culture's idolatrous economic beliefs and practices.
Practicing the King's Economy cuts through much confusion and invites Christians to take their place within the biblical story of the "King Jesus Economy." Through eye-opening true stories of economic discipleship in action, and with a solid exploration of six key biblical themes, the authors offer practical ways for God's people to earn, invest, spend, compensate, save, share, and give in ways that embody God's love and provision for the world.
Foreword by Christopher J. H. Wright.
This book is an edition of the Athenian Constitution, the only one
to survive of 158 Constitutions written in the school of Aristotle
in the fourth century B.C., of which a text on papyrus was found at
the end of the nineteenth century. Based on an edition commissioned
by the Fondazione Lorenzo Valla in Italy, it provides an
introduction, a re-edited Greek text with a facing translation, and
a commentary. The editor has been engaged with this text throughout
his working life, and published a large commentary on it in 1981
and a Penguin Classics translation of it in 1984: since then
scholarly advances have continued, and he has been able to take
advantage of them to bring the material in this book up to date.
The translation aims at an accurate rendering of the Greek text;
the commentary is based on the translation, and should be
accessible to readers with little or no knowledge of Greek.

With this edition of Book I, P. J. Rhodes provides the 'prequel' to
his editions of Thucydides' books on the Archidamian War (II, III
and IV.1-V.24). As before, he provides an Introduction on
Thucydides' history and on the Peloponnesian War, a Greek text with
selective critical apparatus and facing translation, and a
commentary which will be useful both to specialists and to readers
with little or no Greek, and which assumes no previous acquaintance
with Thucydides. Matters of text and language are discussed where
necessary, but the emphasis is on Thucydides' subject-matter - the
Peloponnesian War presented as the greatest war in Greek history,
and accounts of the events directly leading to the war and of the
growth of Athenian power since the Persian Wars which explain why
this war between the two great powers of fifth-century Greece was
fought - and on the way in which he has treated it.

Multiple Sclerosis is a very serious, complex condition with a
whole host of symptoms. Everyone's experiences are different. There
are a lot of theories and speculation in the medical community as
to how it is acquired, and just as many various types of
experimental, sometimes controversial treatments as to how to
control it. The key word being "experimental." This book was
written for anyone affected by Multiple Sclerosis, whether you're
newly diagnosed or have been living with this condition for years.
Whether you are personally suffering, or have a loved one who has
been diagnosed, this book contains something of value for everyone.
You will be taken on an emotional journey through the eyes of the
author, going through the physical and emotional roller coaster
that is the life of a person diagnosed with this awful condition.
This book speaks from a layman's perspective, not a scientific one.
Through the information contained in this book, the author seeks to
educate and inform people through her story that everyone should
take an active role in their own healthcare, by performing
independent research before agreeing to ingest any type of
treatment. Unfortunately, doctors don't always have all the
answers, especially when it comes to Multiple Sclerosis.

The adventures of Tacker, a housecat who becomes the king of a
nearby forest, gradually merges with the unfolding destinies of his
mistress and her family. Tac's efforts to aid the troubled finances
of the family lead him to pose as an anonymous benefactor and Lana
begins her own quest to understand the motives of her family's
mysterious guardian. The truth shakes Lana to her core as she
enters a world where magic still rules and childhood fairy tales
are not simply stories. My fantasy novel, Destinies in Motion,
shows the Vladners, a normal family who could easily live next door
to any reader, at the time in their lives when the interference of
mysterious events has turned their daily existence upside down. It
happens that only their cat, Tacker, knows about the nature of
these changes but he remains silent; which is why his mistress, the
teenage girl Lana Vladner, is forced to commence a quest to unveil
the mystery by herself. At the same time, she struggles to find her
own place in life. It is difficult for Lana to confront magic since
she does not believe in it and needs proof of its existence and
that is why several strange events, none of which at first sight
appear to be connected one with the other, start to unfold around
her. She meets a stranger, from whom she receives a very valuable
gift, which motivates her to search for more signs of magic. Then
she finds a guide to lead her to the land where her destiny lies,
her own pet, Tac, who has suddenly discovered a new talent and
becomes involved in activities unusual for a housecat. As a result
of many funny and dangerous events, Tac becomes a treasure hunter
and, through a further series of adventures, the wealthy owner of a
fairground and an employer of humans. Despite great achievements
that bring him the position of King of the nearby woods, the cat is
only one of the many animal characters who now start to interact
with people, sometimes on a very human level, which provides an
answer to the question that has puzzled many pet owners at least
once: "What is my cat or dog thinking whilst it's mysterious, or
trusting, eyes are watching me?" Of course, there are no fantasy
stories that can exist without dragons, wizards, romance or the
clashing interests of magical helpers and powerful enemies. The
intrigue finally unfolds into the kidnapping of Lana's baby
brother, Troy, by an evil witch bent on exchanging his pure soul
for the satisfaction of her own dark desires. This is a time in her
life when Lana needs to make a choice; whether to be a passive
fence-sitter by relying on someone else to take-over her affairs or
to accept the challenge presented to her of protecting the old
fashioned values of family, friendship and love. At the beginning
of the novel, Lana's character is uncertain and she primarily
depends upon the opinions of her friends but, towards the end of
it, she consciously takes the responsibility upon herself of
finding and saving her own brother and thus ensures her own
transition into adulthood.
'Old Oligarch' is a label often applied to the unknown author of
the Athenian Constitution preserved with the works of Xenophon.
Probably written in the mid 420's B.C., it is the earliest
surviving Athenian prose text, and its author was probably a young
pupil of the teachers known as sophists. It is an essay which
replies to oligarchic criticisms of the Athenian democracy by
agreeing with the critics that democracy is distasteful but arguing
that it is appropriate for Athens as a city whose power depends on
the poorer citizens who row the navy's ships, and that it is
successful and could not easily be overthrown. This edition
provides a Greek text and English translation, with Introduction,
Commentary and Appendixes which discuss the date, authorship and
character of the work, the historical background, the statements
and arguments presented by the author and features of the author's
style.
Herodotus is a colossus of ancient history, from whose major work
the Histories, much of our knowledge of the Persian Wars and other
events of the period derives. Writing in the third quarter of the
fifth century B.C., he is the earliest Greek historian whose work
survives and he was the first to produce an accomplished treatment
of a major theme. Setting it in the context of conflict between
Europe and Asia, Herodotus gives an account which traces the rise
and expansion of the Persian empire and its dealings with the
Greeks, and culminates in the Persians' unsuccessful invasions of
Greece in 490 and 480-479 B.C. This is the first part to be
included in the Aris & Phillips Classical Texts series of the
Histories. Book V covers the beginning of the revolt of the Ionian
Greeks against Persia in the 490s, with digressions on the history
of Athens and Sparta at that time. As with other volumes in the
series this volume comprises Introduction, Greek text with
selective critical apparatus, English translation and a Commentary
which focuses particularly on the history which Herodotus narrates,
and how and why he narrates it as he does.
Following on from his first two books, Rhodes completes his edition
of Thucydides' books on the Archidamian War, providing an
Introduction Thucydides' history and on the Peloponnesian War,
Greek text with selective critical apparatus and facing
translation, and a commentary which should be useful both to
specialists and to readers with little or no Greek, and which
assumes no previous acquaintance with Thucydides. Matters of text
and language are discussed where necessary, but the emphasis is on
the war which formed Thucydides' subject-matter and on the way in
which he has treated the subject.

Professor Rhodes continues his edition of Thucydides' books on the
Archidamian War with his edition of Book III, providing an
Introduction (on Thucydides' history and on the Peloponnesian War),
Greek text with selective critical apparatus and facing
translation, and a commentary which should be useful not only to
specialists but also to readers who know little or no Greek, and
which assumes no previous acquaintance with Thucydides. Matters of

Most editions of single books of Thucydides are nearly 100 years
old, and concentrate heavily on textual and linguistic matters.
This new edition of Book II, the book in which Thucydides' main
narrative of the Peloponnesian war begins, contains an
introduction, a Greek text, an English translation, and a
commentary which should be useful not only to specialists but also
to readers who know little or no Greek. Matters of texts and
language are discussed when necessary, but the emphasis is on the
war which formed Thucydides' subject matter, and on the way in
which he has chosen to treat the subject. Greek text with
facing-page translation, commentary and introduction.
