Walter Brueggemann has been one of the leading voices in Hebrew
Bible interpretation for decades. His landmark works in Old
Testament theology have inspired and informed a generation of
students, scholars, and preachers. These chapters gather his recent
addresses and essays, never published before, drawn from all three
parts of the Hebrew Bible-Torah, prophets, and writings-and
addressing the role of the Hebrew canon in the life of the church.
Brueggemann turns his critical erudition to those
practices-prophecy, lament, prayer, faithful imagination, and a
holy economics-that alone may usher in a humane and peaceful future
for our cities and our world, in defiance of the most ruthless
aspects of capitalism, the arrogance of militarism, and the
disciplines of the national security state.
It is generally agreed that there is significant irony in the
Bible. However, to date no work has been published in biblical
scholarship that on the one hand includes interpretations of both
Hebrew Bible and New Testament writings under the perspective of
irony, and on the other hand offers a panorama of the approaches to
the different types and functions of irony in biblical texts. The
following volume: (1) reevaluates scholarly definitions of irony
and the use of the term in biblical research; (2) builds on
existing methods of interpretation of ironic texts; (3) offers
judicious analyses of methodological approaches to irony in the
Bible; and (4) develops fresh insights into biblical passages.
A compendium of short stories by Charles Sharps, the author of One
More Wakeup, Where Memories Were Made was written to insure that
Charlie's family will have a true historical perspective of the
memories they share as they sit around future campfires reminiscing
of yesteryear. Where Memories Were Made was written by a father who
wanted to share the hunting memories he enjoyed with his sons, John
and Joe. He also pays tribute to the many happy hours, days, and
weeks that he spent with his friends and relatives hunting deer,
elk, and antelope in Oregon. Through a potpourri of hunting
stories, he gives extraordinary glimpses of the closeness that he
has with his sons and expresses his love for the outdoors and his
feelings of responsibility for his family. Where Memories Were Made
is about his life after Vietnam where as a veteran remembering the
past he copes with the present.
First published in 1932, Cecil Sharp's English Folk-Songs from the
Southern Appalachians contains 274 songs -- ballads, songs, hymns,
nursery songs, jigs, and play-party games -- with 968 tunes,
collected between 1916 and 1918 from traditional singers in the
mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It
remains one of the foundational collections of American folk music.
This thesis describes the inception, design, and implementation of
stereoselective desymmetrization reactions in the total synthesis
of the natural products pactamycin and paspaline. In the case of
pactamycin, the author develops a novel asymmetric Mannich reaction
and symmetry-breaking reduction strategy to enable facile
construction of the complex core architecture in fifteen steps
using commercially available materials - the shortest synthesis to
date. He subsequently demonstrates the flexibility of this approach
in SAR investigations by highlighting the preparation of
twenty-five unique pactamycin structural congeners. For paspaline,
the author develops a biocatalytic desymmetrization strategy that
allows the highly controlled synthesis of core stereochemistry and
provides a platform for the development of new conceptual
disconnections in the synthesis of "steroid-like" natural products.
This thesis offers a valuable resource for students embarking on a
PhD in total synthesis.
Mitosis: Methods and Protocols provides state-of-the-art overviews
on the most important approaches currently used in mitosis research
spanning from the analysis of single molecules in isolation to
their utilization within the complex environment of the cell. The
volume is divided into four parts, each focused on methods
pertaining to distinct aspects of mitosis research. Part I presents
approaches for visualizing and analyzing the dynamic behaviors of
the spindle apparatus, the microtubule based machine that drives
chromosome segregation. Part II focuses more generally on methods
for studying and manipulating the microtubule cytoskeleton in cells
and complex cell free extracts. Part III provides state of the art
biophysical and high resolution microscopy approaches for assessing
complex interactions between microtubules and
microtubule-associated proteins in isolation as well as microtubule
structure in cells. Part IV provides methods for studying the
effects of cell shape on cell division and methods for quantifying
aneuploidy (aberrant chromosome number) which frequently results
from mitotic defects and has been linked to human maladies ranging
from birth defects to cancer. Written in the highly successful
Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include
introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary
materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible
laboratory protocols and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding
known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Mitosis: Methods and
Protocols seeks to provide diverse methods and new techniques to
address new or old questions related to the mechanisms of mitosis.
This book contains an in-depth analysis of thermoelectric theory, an overview of present day thermoelectric materials and devices, and as an updated source of information on the most studied recent thermoelectric materials developments. The main emphasis is on a basic understanding of the concepts and experimental techniques needed to propel researchers towards new and novel classes of thermoelectric materials with enhanced properties. The aim is to assist researchers in the field. The text is an expanded edition of a previous text "Electronic Refrigeration" by one of the authors, Julian Goldsmid. Half of the text is devoted to research that has taken place since the publication of that text. In addition, emphasis is placed on new materials research and developments.
