Where Memories Were Made - Stories by an Oregon Hunter (Hardcover): Charles J. Sharps Where Memories Were Made - Stories by an Oregon Hunter (Hardcover)
Charles J. Sharps
R532 Discovery Miles 5 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A compendium of short stories by Charles Sharps, the author of One More Wakeup, Where Memories Were Made was written to insure that Charlie's family will have a true historical perspective of the memories they share as they sit around future campfires reminiscing of yesteryear. Where Memories Were Made was written by a father who wanted to share the hunting memories he enjoyed with his sons, John and Joe. He also pays tribute to the many happy hours, days, and weeks that he spent with his friends and relatives hunting deer, elk, and antelope in Oregon. Through a potpourri of hunting stories, he gives extraordinary glimpses of the closeness that he has with his sons and expresses his love for the outdoors and his feelings of responsibility for his family. Where Memories Were Made is about his life after Vietnam where as a veteran remembering the past he copes with the present.

This thesis describes the inception, design, and implementation of stereoselective desymmetrization reactions in the total synthesis of the natural products pactamycin and paspaline. In the case of pactamycin, the author develops a novel asymmetric Mannich reaction and symmetry-breaking reduction strategy to enable facile construction of the complex core architecture in fifteen steps using commercially available materials - the shortest synthesis to date. He subsequently demonstrates the flexibility of this approach in SAR investigations by highlighting the preparation of twenty-five unique pactamycin structural congeners. For paspaline, the author develops a biocatalytic desymmetrization strategy that allows the highly controlled synthesis of core stereochemistry and provides a platform for the development of new conceptual disconnections in the synthesis of "steroid-like" natural products. This thesis offers a valuable resource for students embarking on a PhD in total synthesis.

Mitosis - Methods and Protocols (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): David J. Sharp Mitosis - Methods and Protocols (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)

Mitosis: Methods and Protocols provides state-of-the-art overviews on the most important approaches currently used in mitosis research spanning from the analysis of single molecules in isolation to their utilization within the complex environment of the cell. The volume is divided into four parts, each focused on methods pertaining to distinct aspects of mitosis research. Part I presents approaches for visualizing and analyzing the dynamic behaviors of the spindle apparatus, the microtubule based machine that drives chromosome segregation. Part II focuses more generally on methods for studying and manipulating the microtubule cytoskeleton in cells and complex cell free extracts. Part III provides state of the art biophysical and high resolution microscopy approaches for assessing complex interactions between microtubules and microtubule-associated proteins in isolation as well as microtubule structure in cells. Part IV provides methods for studying the effects of cell shape on cell division and methods for quantifying aneuploidy (aberrant chromosome number) which frequently results from mitotic defects and has been linked to human maladies ranging from birth defects to cancer. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Mitosis: Methods and Protocols seeks to provide diverse methods and new techniques to address new or old questions related to the mechanisms of mitosis.

R6,629 Discovery Miles 66 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains an in-depth analysis of thermoelectric theory, an overview of present day thermoelectric materials and devices, and as an updated source of information on the most studied recent thermoelectric materials developments. The main emphasis is on a basic understanding of the concepts and experimental techniques needed to propel researchers towards new and novel classes of thermoelectric materials with enhanced properties. The aim is to assist researchers in the field. The text is an expanded edition of a previous text "Electronic Refrigeration" by one of the authors, Julian Goldsmid. Half of the text is devoted to research that has taken place since the publication of that text. In addition, emphasis is placed on new materials research and developments.

In the first half of the 20th century there was immense scholarly interest in the biography of the prophet Jeremiah as the background for understanding the development of the book of Jeremiah. Around the turn of the century this interest disappeared, but it has now resurfaced in a transformed configuration as work seeking to analyze the creation of the literary persona, Jeremiah the prophet. This volume examines the construction of Jeremiah in the prophetic book and its afterlife, presenting a wide range of scholarly approaches spanning the understanding of Jeremiah from Old Testament times via the Renaissance to the 20th century, and from theology to the history of literature.
