Evaluation is crucial for determining the effectiveness of social
programs and interventions. In this nuts and bolts handbook, social
work and health care professionals are shown how evaluations should
be done, taking the intimidation and guesswork out of this
essential task. Current perspectives in social work and health
practice, such as the strengths perspective, consumer empowerment,
empowerment evaluation, and evidence-based practice, are linked to
evaluation concepts throughout the book to emphasize their
importance. This book makes evaluation come alive with
comprehensive examples of each different type of evaluation, such
as a strengths-based needs assessment in a local community, a needs
assessment for Child Health Plus programs, comprehensive program
descriptions of HIV services and community services for the aged, a
model for goals and objectives in programs for people with mental
illness, a monitoring study of private practice social work, and
process evaluations of a Medicare advocacy program and a health
advocacy program to explain advance directives. Equal emphasis is
given to both quantitative and qualitative data analysis with real
examples that make statistics and concepts in qualitative analysis
un-intimidating. By integrating both evaluation and research
methods and assuming no previous knowledge of research, this book
makes an excellent reference for professionals working in social
work and health settings who are now being called upon to conduct
or supervise program evaluation and may need a refresher on
research methods. With a pragmatic approach that includes survey
design, data collection methods, sampling, analysis, and report
writing, it is also an excellent text or classroom resource for
students new to the field of program evaluation.

Between 2000 and 2010, many contemporary US-American women writers
were returning to the private space of the kitchen, writing about
their experiences in that space and then publishing their memoirs
for the larger public to consume. Season to Taste: Rewriting
Kitchen Space in Contemporary Women's Food Memoirs explores women's
food memoirs with recipes in order to consider the ways in which
these women are rewriting this kitchen space and renegotiating
their relationships with food. Caroline J. Smith begins the book
with a historical overview of how the space of the kitchen, and the
expectations of women associated with it, have shifted considerably
since the 1960s. Better Homes and Gardens, as well as the discourse
of the second-wave feminist movement, tended to depict the space as
a place of imprisonment. The contemporary popular writers examined
in Season to Taste, such as Ruth Reichl, Kim Sunee, Jocelyn Delk
Adams, Julie Powell, and Molly Wizenberg, respond to this
characterization by instead presenting the kitchen as a place of
transformation. In their memoirs and recipes, these authors
reinterpret their roles within the private sphere of the home as
well as the public sphere of the world of publishing (whether print
or digital publication). The authors examined here explode the
divide of private/feminine and public/masculine in both content and
form and complicate the genres of recipe writing, diary writing,
and memoir. These women writers, through the act of preparing and
consuming food, encourage readers to reconsider the changing gender
politics of the kitchen.

As Cardinal Hugo and as pope, Gregory was one of the dominant
figures in the history of the papacy of the High Middle Ages.
Coming to prominence under Pope Innocent III, Hugo played an
important political role, particularly as legate on various
occasions, as well as being a major promoter of the new religious
orders. As pope, his battle with Emperor Frederick II is one of
medieval history's most absorbing conflicts. But he also acted as
peacemaker, promoter of the Crusades, instigator of mission for the
sake of conversion, refomer of the Curia, patron of arts and
liturgy, and as a passionate advocate of Church reform. His
decretal collection, the Liber Extra, was the most influential of
the Middle Ages. A full examination of Gregory's pontificate is
very long overdue. The current volume brings together a team of
international scholars, each of them expert in dealing with a
particular aspect of the pontificate, and provides what will be a
collection of studies of lasting scholarly value on a central
figure of the medieval papacy.
