This book charts the regulatory changes at the heart of capitalist economies; the financial reporting on financial markets. It is a unique contribution interconnecting issues both of contemporary political science and accounting research. The book contains in-depth descriptions of regulatory settings (and changes) in six countries: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States and aims to takes a close look at drivers of change such as crises and globalization. The book also links these drivers of change with moderating institutional structures such as the legal and financial systems, but also the welfare states in place. Taken together, it shows how a trend to more transnationalization in accounting emerges but also its likely limits.

This book focuses on the recent transformations of national accounting systems. It extends comparative accounting literature using a new comprehensive framework, which embeds a governance perspective throughout the financial reporting process. The authors track transformations in standard setting, enforcement and disclosure regulation over time in three typical OECD countries. Modes and degrees of convergence illustrate where "global governance" in accounting has already been achieved and where national regulators still dominate the accounting agenda.

By exploring how financial, legal and wider socio-economic systems can accelerate or decelerate the harmonization in financial markets, this book connects issues both of contemporary political science and accounting research.

This book is a slightly augmented version of a set of lec tures on optimization which I held at the University of Got tingen in the winter semester 1983/84. The lectures were in tended to give an introduction to the foundations and an im pression of the applications of optimization theory. Since in finite dimensional problems were also to be treated and one could only assume a minimal knowledge of functional analysis, the necessary tools from functional analysis were almost com pletely developed during the course of the semester. The most important aspects of the course are the duality theory for convex programming and necessary optimality conditions for nonlinear optimization problems; here we strive to make the geometric background particularly clear. For lack of time and space we were not able to go into several important problems in optimization - e. g. vector optimization, geometric program ming and stability theory. I am very grateful to various people for their help in pro ducing this text. R. Schaback encouraged me to publish my lec tures and put me in touch with the Vieweg-Verlag. W. BrUbach and O. This book takes a look at the world of accounting and examines business's relationship with the state. It compares the accounting regulations in Germany, the UK and the US to provide evidence that privatization and convergence must be used with caution, at least in the world of accounting.

Untersucht wird hierbei die Frage, wel- chen Bedingungen eine Lasung einer gegebenen Optimierungsaufgabe notwendig zu genugen hat. Bei konkreten Fragestellungen hofft man, mit Hilfe dieser notwendigen Optimalitatsbedingungen Aussagen zu gewinnen, die zu einer Berechnung maglicher Lasungen ausgenutzt werden kannen.

Die Bemuhungen der modernen Psychiatrie gelten einer offeneren Behandlung psychisch Kranker. Eine nicht genau bekannte Anzahl von chronisch Geisteskranken und geistig Be- hinderten, deren Dauerunterbringung man fruher fur notwendig erachtete, wird in zu- nehmendem MaBe die Chance erhalten, wieder unter uns zu leben. Damit werden den betroffenen Familien und der Gesellschaft mehr Lasten und vielleicht auch mehr Risiken auferlegt, als sie zu tragen gewohnt waren. Wer bereits an den ersten Versuchen beteiligt war, gemeindebezogene und rehabili- tationsorientierte Psychiatrie in cler Bundesrepublik einzufuhren, der weiB, welche Wider- stande zu uberwinden waren. Was konnte man dem Hauptargument "Geistesgestorte sind unberechenbar und gefahrlich" eigentlich entgegensetzen? Die divergierenden Auffassun- gen, die dazu im eigenen Fachgebiet vertreten wurden, waren wenig hilfreich. Eine empiri- sche Erhebung, die zuverlassige Auskunft geben konnte, lag nicht vor. Der eigene Glaube - von manchen hoch geschatzt - ist flir den Wissenschaftler, auch wenn er in der Praxis steht, keine solide Grundlage.

Originally published in German in 1973, and first published in English as this Cambridge edition in 1982, this is a detailed and systematic account of the extent to which mentally abnormal offenders are likely to commit crimes of major violence, based upon a study of all the 533 men and women in the Federal German Republic from 1955 to 1964 who were detained in hospitals after committing homicide or near-homicide. The authors calculated that such patients are no more, but also no less, dangerous than the rest of the population, and that the policy of treating psychotic or seriously subnormal patients in the community does not expose the public to risk. The book makes important suggestions for the prevention of such disasters by describing the diagnoses, special symptoms and social situations which involve a special risk, especially to close relatives and those with whom the patient is emotionally involved.
