A number of well-known forests have been the object of studies by ecological teams. Every ecologist is familiar with the names of forests such as Whytham Woods in England (Elton 1966), Solling in West Germany (Ellenberg 1971), Hubbard Brook in New Hampshire, U. S. A. The Niepolomice Forest in Southern Poland (Fig. 1) does not possess any spectacular features and it may be regarded as a typical forest of the lowlands of continental Europe. Situated in the Vistula River Valley, 20 km east of Cracow (50 Degrees07' N, 20 Degrees23' E) it consists of two major sections: an extensive pine forest of the Pino-Quercetum type, and a smaller, deciduous, oak-hornbeam- Fig. 1. This huge forested area (11,000 ha) owes its survival in one of the most densely populated parts of Europe to a long period of protection as a royal hunting ground. The period of royal protection ended abruptly at the turn of 20th century under the devastating blows of two world wars followed by perhaps an even greater danger, the effects of modern developments in heavy industry.

In the past five years significant progress has been made in our basic and clinical under standing of Parkinson's disease. The discovery that MPTP, a relatively simple molecule, is able to induce parkinsonism in otherwise healthy adult humans, and the recent interest in the possibility of "transplantation" procedures as a therapeutic modality in the treatment of Parkin son's disease have generated enormous interest in research related to Parkinson's disease. In this setting, the National Parkinson Foundation decided to organize a research meeting to bring together scientists actively engaged in research relevant to the study of Parkinson's disease, to accelerate its progress and to promote an exchange of ideas. This meeting took place in Janu ary 1988 at Key Biscayne, Florida. In numerous puplications the results of synovectomy have been written about where either one or another viewpoint have been examined. In this publication, the attempt is made to collect as many parameters as possible so as to get a most objective picture of the therapeutic worth by studying 100 knee and 370 finger synovectomies. During the survey, among other points, the following important aspects were taken under consideration: The operative results were not evaluated by the operating surgeon, but by a rheumatologist who was not on the clinic staff. As is well known, it is difficult to evaluate the X-ray picture objectively, since very often "subjective impressions" prevail. Gschwend succeeded in setting up - mainly for the synovectomized finger joints - a comprehensive point system, so as not to leave the evaluation to chance. Besides the purely local joint condition, an internal rheumatological status, at the time of the operation and the follow-up examinations, with corresponding laboratory tests, was carried out and included in the evaluation. Finally, it should be pointed out that this is a long term study of 5 years, with various controls made in between. The examination of so-called control groups, for the present study, seems to us to be highly problematic and of little value for a statement. Essentially, only the local condition with respect to pain and swellings im proves, while the general activity of the inflammatory process as also the mobility and deformity of the synovectomized joints will only be somewhat influenced.
