To make the next giant step in consciousness and to chart a
sustainable course for humanity's future, we need to reconsider
some of our deepest notions of faith and religion. Our environment,
some say, is on the brink of collapse. Our governments answer to
corporate interests instead of to us, and our religious
institutions continue to preach more bigotry, hatred, and judgment.
We still have time to steer humanity's destiny, but many believe we
have less than a century left to do so. The changes, logical in the
extreme, involve each and every one of us rethinking who and what
we are, then reassessing our lives based on a new understanding,
solidly gounded in reason.
Malnutrition is a serious problem amongst many sections of the
population. Increases in morbidity and mortality, length of
hospital stay and hence, cost of providing health care have all
been attributable to this, so the identification of subjects at
risk of malnutrition is essential to provide optimal nutrition
during treatment and recovery. Many screening tools have been
developed for the purpose of identifying subjects who are at risk
of malnutrition. However, selection of the most appropriate
instrument for use in a particular population is hampered by the
sheer number of existing tools and the fact that many of these have
not been rigorously developed and evaluated.
