As the earliest Arthurian verse-novel in the German language, Hartmann von Aue's Erec was highly influential, not only on the many Arthurian works that followed, but also on courtly narrative verse in general. However, his tale is of more than antiquarian interest. Its subjects--the individual in conflict with society and the destructive force of possessive love--are modern, and its language, when transferred into prose, is more direct and lucid than most contemporary writing. Indeed, it was the conviction that the story deserved a much larger audience than that of medieval scholars which inspired this translation, the first into English.

Few stories were as widely known during the Middle Ages as the account of Iwein and Laudine, which appeared in French, Welsh, English, Norse, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, and two German variants. The older German version, that by the Swabian nobleman Hartmann von Aue, won instant popularity and became a model of form, style, and language for the many courtly epics which his countrymen composed up to the beginning of the modern period. In recent years, his Iwein has enjoyed a remarkable revival among medieval scholars as traditional interpretations have been challenged by new ones.

This volume presents the first English translation of one of the most original literary products of the German medieval period. It is introduced with a sketch of the poet's life, an evaluation of his work as autobiography and as fiction, and a survey of the extensive criticism that has been devoted to it. Service of Ladies has been put into English not only as a significant document of its time and place, but more especially because it is a piece of literature which is perhaps as entertaining today as it was seven centuries ago when Ulrich was reciting it to the laughter and applause of the knights and ladies of his native Styria.

The Arthurian verse-novel "Wigalois," written by the German knight Wirnt von Grafenberg in the early years of the thirteenth century, tells a story which was well known in the medieval period, appearing in eight versions of four languages. This first English translation makes accessible to a new audience the adventure-filled tale of the hero's knightly education and quest for honor, and his ultimate recognition of Sir Gawain as his long-lost father. The translator's introduction compares Wirnt's work with other treatments of the Wigalois material in France, England, and Italy; discusses the German sources and reception of the novel; and offers a careful literary analysis.
