Alfred Hitchcock's most celebrated British thriller, adapted from John Buchan's novel. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) becomes the victim of mistaken identity when a female corpse is dumped in his flat by a spy ring. He tries to track down the true murderers whilst being pursued by the police, and hooks up with an unwilling accomplice (Madeleine Carroll). Their adventure eventually leads them to a music hall, where the secret of the 39 steps is revealed. Also included is the documentary 'Hitchcock - The Early Years'.
Triple bill of British movies produced by the Children's Film Foundation. In 'Supersonic Saucer' (1956) an alien from Venus befriends a group of children and helps them to fend off a band of thieves. In 'Kadoyng' (1972) three youngsters team up with an extra-terrestrial being in an attempt to stop their village being demolished. In 'The Glitterball' (1977) two boys help a young alien get back to its mothership with the Air Force and a petty criminal hot on their heels.
Classic drama based on the stage play by Edgar Wallace. The story revolves around the aristocratic Lebanon family, with Dowager Lady Lebanon (Helen Hayes) harbouring a dark secret. It seems that every generation or so, the Lebanon clan produces a homicidal maniac. The unfortunate candidate this time around seems to be Lord Willis Lebanon (Marius Goring), a fact that the Dowager Lady hopes to hide from the world. Alas, blood will tell and murder will out.
