1868. The following lectures were prepared under somewhat peculiar
circumstances and were not originally intended for publication. The
author devoted his idle time to writing short pencil sketches,
illustrative of Masonic symbols. He learned from the useful
instructions portrayed by these symbols that it was only through
application, industry, and perseverance in the pursuit of this
object, they he was able to attain his desires. These lectures are
devoted exclusively to the first three Degrees in Masonry,
denominated by the Symbolic Degrees.

1870. Or an illustration of its speculative features, based upon
the "Interrogatories and the "Ancient Charges" of the institution.
This volume may be regarded and viewed in the light of a
philosophical illustration of the subject and it is for the
consideration of the Masonic reader to judge its pretensions to
merit in this respect and its worth will be appreciated according
to the estimate the reader bestows upon the labors performed in its
making.
Illustrations of the Symbols of Masonry, Scripturally and Morally
Considered and The Philosophy of Freemasonry.
Illustrations of the Symbols of Freemasonry is a collection of
lectures by Jacob Ernst. As the author himself admitted, they were
not originally intended for publication. They began as a series of
notes and sketches about the three degrees made during a period of
unemployment. Having shared his efforts with his brethren, Ernst
presented his lectures to the Fraternity in the winter of 1867 and
at the request of the Vattier Lodge and Kilwinnig Chapter. He was
then requested to publish his lectures in book form. Originally
published in 1868, Illustrations of the Symbols of Freemasonry
remains a great source of information and light. It makes a great
addition to any Masonic collection and is the perfect gift for the
newly raised Master Mason.
