The Scriptures teach clearly that God desires to live in intimate fellowship and communion with mankind. He wants us to enjoy His love, peace, joy, and companionship and to rest in His redemption, experiencing the perfect harmony and contentment and fulfillment of purpose for which He created us. God's original purpose for creating mankind was simply for us to enjoy relationship with Him, the kind of fellowship that the first couple, Adam and Eve, enjoyed in the Garden of Eden, when God walked with them in the cool of the evening (Gen. 3:8).

Then, sin entered the human experience and separated all mankind from that divine fellowship. But when we place our faith in Christ's sacrifice for our sin, we are redeemed by the blood of Christ and justified in the sight of God. But that is not the end of the matter; it is only the beginning. God's intention is that we be completely restored--spirit, soul, and body--to the divine rest found in His redemption, He wants us to experience that mystery of intimate communion with our Creator/Redeemer.

In this book we will discuss four important aspects of fulfilling the deepest desire of the human heart--to know God personally and intimately in the way God's great, loving heart intended. To know the love of God that brings true heart contentment, we need to walk in the understanding of these divine principles:

In Tearing Down the Lost Cause: The Removal of New Orleans's Confederate Statues James Gill and Howard Hunter examine New Orleans's complicated relationship with the history of the Confederacy pre- and post-Civil War. The authors open and close their manuscript with the dramatic removal of the city's Confederate statues. On the eve of the Civil War, New Orleans was far more cosmopolitan than Southern, with its sizable population of immigrants, Northern-born businessmen, and white and Black Creoles. Ambivalent about secession and war, the city bore divided loyalties between the Confederacy and the Union. However, by 1880 New Orleans rivaled Richmond as a bastion of the Lost Cause. After Appomattox, a significant number of Confederate veterans moved into the city giving elites the backing to form a Confederate civic culture. While it's fair to say that the three Confederate monuments and the white supremacist Liberty Monument all came out of this dangerous nostalgia, the authors argue that each monument embodies its own story and mirrors the city and the times. The Lee monument expressed the bereavement of veterans and a desire to reconcile with the North, though strictly on their own terms. The Davis monument articulated the will of the Ladies Confederate Memorial Association to solidify the Lost Cause and Southern patriotism. The Beauregard Monument honored a local hero, but also symbolized the waning of French New Orleans and rising Americanization. The Liberty Monument, throughout its history, represented white supremacy and the cruel hypocrisy of celebrating a past that never existed. While the book is a narrative of the rise and fall of the four monuments, it is also about a city engaging history. Gill and Hunter contextualize these statues rather than polarize, interviewing people who are on both sides including citizens, academics, public intellectuals, and former mayor Mitch Landrieu. Using the statues as a lens, the authors construct a compelling narrative that provides a larger cultural history of the city.

Mardi Gras remains one of the most distinctive features of New Orleans. Although the city has celebrated Carnival since its days as a French and Spanish colonial outpost, the rituals familiar today were largely established in the Civil War era by a white male elite. In fact, the men behind the masks on the parade floats and at the Mardi Gras balls have kept the spirit of the Confederacy alive. They have put artistry and erudition into their Carnival displays while harboring a virulent racism that has led to violence and massacre. Because the Mardi Gras organizations have remained secret societies, their role in the white supremacist cause has not been fully recorded, until now.

"Lords of Misrule" is the first book to explore the effects of Mardi Gras on the social and political development of New Orleans, the first to analyze recent attempts to end racial segregation within the organizations that stage the annual festivities.

The history of Carnival is so intertwined with the history of New Orleans that the story cannot be told without a social, economic, and political context. By directly challenging existing accounts of post-World War II relations among the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, Divided Allies is a significant contribution to transnational and diplomatic history. At its heart, Divided Allies examines why strategic cooperation among these closely allied Western powers in the Asia-Pacific region was limited during the early Cold War. Thomas K. Robb and David James Gill probe the difficulties of security cooperation as the leadership of these four states balanced intramural competition with the need to develop a common strategy against the Soviet Union and the new communist power, the People's Republic of China. Robb and Gill expose contention and disorganization among non-communist allies in the early phase of containment strategy in Asia-Pacific. In particular, the authors note the significance of economic, racial, and cultural elements to planning for regional security and they highlight how these domestic matters resulted in international disorganization. Divided Allies shows that, amidst these contentious relations, the antipodean powers Australia and New Zealand occupied an important role in the region and successfully utilized quadrilateral diplomacy to advance their own national interests, such as the crafting of the 1951 ANZUS collective security treaty. As fractious as were allied relations in the early days of NATO, Robb and Gill demonstrate that the post-World War II Asia-Pacific was as contentious, and that Britain and the commonwealth nations were necessary partners in the development of early global Cold War strategy.

This book comprises a new edition of the memoirs of a private soldier, James Gilling, originally published in 1855. Gilling served in the Ninth Lancers of the British army, and he gives a well-written, frank, and lively account of his time in India from 1843 to 1850, during which time he took part in both Anglo-Sikh Wars. It is the only published memoir written from the ranks of a lancer regiment at this period, and includes many outspoken opinions about army life, the conduct of war in India, and his fellow soldiers of all ranks. Original copies of this book are extremely rare; none have been traced in the major British and US libraries. The text has been transcribed from a photocopy in the National Army Museum London, UK. The memoir is an unusually frank and detailed account of the life of a cavalry soldier in India, with stories of incidents and individuals, alternating with the author's experiences in the fierce struggle against the well-trained armies of the Sikh nation. Gilling by his own admission was no hero, but just an ordinary soldier who got into scrapes and didn't enjoy soldiering very much, but did his duty when required. In 1850 he purchased his discharge from the army, and emigrated to the United States of America, where he settled in Lyons City, Iowa, and took up his old trade as a hair-dresser. He died in 1861. However, this is not merely a reprint of a rare nineteenth century memoir. The author, a specialist on the British cavalry of the early nineteenth century, has written a full introduction on the life in the cavalry at this period, including the careers of the many officers and comrades mentioned by Gilling. This introduction is drawn from extensive research in primary archives at the British Library, National Archives, and regimental archives, as well as contemporary published and unpublished journals. The work is fully annotated, and includes an extensive list of sources. It therefore provides new depth and perspective on the life of those who formed the ranks of the mounted arm of the British army. This book will appeal to the many people with an amateur but often very knowledgeable interest in the history of the British army, as well as to all those with a more specialist interest in the history of the British army, including university staff and students and special-interest groups and societies. The book will have a particular appeal for those Sikhs world-wide who have an interest in the military heritage of their community, as well as to family historians with ancestors who served in the British army in India.

Rethinking the causes and consequences of Britain's default on its First World War debts to the United States of America The Long Shadow of Default focuses on an important but neglected example of sovereign default between two of the wealthiest and most powerful democracies in modern history. The United Kingdom accrued considerable financial debts to the United States during and immediately after the First World War. In 1934, the British government unilaterally suspended payment on these debts. This book examines why the United Kingdom was one of the last major powers to default on its war debts to the United States and how these outstanding obligations affected political and economic relations between both governments. The British government's unpaid debts cast a surprisingly long shadow over policymaking on both sides of the Atlantic. Memories of British default would limit transatlantic cooperation before and after the Second World War, inform Congressional debates about the economic difficulties of the 1970s, and generate legal challenges for both governments up until the 1990s. More than a century later, the United Kingdom's war debts to the United States remain unpaid and outstanding. David James Gill provides one of the most detailed historical analyses of any sovereign default.
