Janet Ford
R3,970 Discovery Miles 39 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is about debt - a situation which affects a large and growing number of people. In Britain alone in 1986 more than 2 million people were sued for debt in the county courts. But debt cannot be understood apart from credit, and the 1980s have seen a substantial increase in the amount of credit available.

In The Indebted Society Janet Ford gives both an overview of the contemporary credit and debt society and a discussion of the borrower's experience and management of debt. As well as providing a critical examination of the growth and changing structure of credit provision, describing the social and economic base for such growth, and considering explanations for the emergence of default and contemporary attitudes to debt, she also presents a detailed study of forty households with mortgage arrears, placing these personal histories within the broader structure of a credit and debt society.

Home ownership in a risk society - A social analysis of mortgage arrears and possessions (Paperback): Janet Ford, Roger... Home ownership in a risk society - A social analysis of mortgage arrears and possessions (Paperback)
Janet Ford, Roger Burrows, Sarah Nettleton
R821 Discovery Miles 8 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Britain in the 1990s households containing almost 1.4 million adults and children had their mortgaged home possessed. A far greater number experienced serious mortgage arrears but managed to avoid possession. The emergence of such levels of unsustainable home ownership has consequences for many areas of social and public policy, including: the economy; public health; social security reform; and family policy. This book argues that the emergence of unsustainable owner-occupation is emblematic of broader changes in contemporary society associated with the emergence of what commentators such as Beck and Giddens have characterised as a 'risk society'. Home ownership in a risk society: provides the first systematic overview of the meaning and implications of a body of research work that has hitherto remained largely fragmented; argues that the particular conjunction of events which generated the short-term housing crisis of the early 1990s masked a series of more enduring structural changes which have resulted in unsustainable home ownership becoming a more permanent part of the British socio-economic landscape; uses a wide range of methodological strategies - including in-depth qualitative interviews with adults and children, survey analysis, and the multivariate statistical analysis of large-scale data sets; paints a rich and detailed empirical picture of the causes, socio-economic distribution and social consequences of mortgage arrears and possessions. This broad-ranging book is aimed at students, researchers, policy makers and practitioners with an interest in social policy, sociology, human geography, urban studies, housing studies, public health, economics and finance.

Archeology of Mississippi (Paperback): Calvin S. Brown Archeology of Mississippi (Paperback)
Calvin S. Brown; Introduction by Janet Ford
R1,112 Discovery Miles 11 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This reprinting makes available again the only book of its kind to be focused upon the prehistoric Indians of Mississippi. Although written expressly for the layreader, it has continued for more than eighty years to appeal to a wide audience that ranges from professional archeologists and scholars to weekend artifact collectors.

Published originally in 1926, "Archeology of Mississippi" details Brown's records collected during more than a decade of research. Anyone wishing to investigate archeology in Mississippi must start with this book. As early as 1912 Brown, a professor of romance languages at the University of Mississippi, began taking photographs of Mississippi Indian mounds. His are the only photographic records of certain cultural sites that have since then been drastically altered.
