No matter what you teach, there is a 100 Ideas title for you! The
100 Ideas series offers teachers practical, easy-to-implement
strategies and activities for the classroom. Each author is an
expert in their field and is passionate about sharing best practice
with their peers. Each title includes at least ten additional
extra-creative Bonus Ideas that won't fail to inspire and engage
all learners. _______________ Based on extensive research and
practical experience, 100 Ideas for Secondary Teachers: Engaging
Parents presents ideas for supporting the most effective forms of
parental engagement in secondary schools. Engaging parents in their
children's learning is the best lever we have to raise achievement
in schools and parental support is essential to help students make
progress throughout their secondary education. Written by two of
the leading experts in the field, this book explains why it is so
essential to get parents on board and how this can be done
efficiently and effectively by all school staff. Tackling common
issues such as homework, exams and transition, Janet Goodall and
Kathryn Weston provide evidence-based ideas that can be implemented
quickly and easily by all secondary teachers and school leaders,
including form tutors and heads of year.
Narrowing the Achievement Gap proposes a radical change to our
conception of learning, education and schooling, arguing that
parental engagement is the best lever we have for school
improvement and closing the achievement gap. Unique in its focus on
original research linking underachievement and parental engagement,
this book uses a range of international case studies to demonstrate
that achievement isn't only reliant on what happens in school and
that what happens out of school is equally important. Each chapter
explores how schools can actively engage with parents and
communities to reinstate education in the home, and to generate
support to combat issues out of their control, including poverty,
deprivation, and a lack of social capital. Although schools have an
integral part to play in this process, it argues that parents and
society must reconsider their own educational responsibility,
regardless of background, and offers a solid research base and
practical suggestions to help do so. Consisting of an in-depth and
contemporary study of this significant issue in educational
achievement and written by an expert in the field, this text will
appeal to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the
fields of education, schooling, sociology of education, school
effectiveness and improvement, school policy and school leadership.

Out-of-school learning spans varied formal and informal contexts
and is hugely important for the lives of children. The need for
time, flexibility, and agility in research within this field is
highlighted throughout this multi-disciplinary edited volume, as
each author reflects on how to make sense of the unknown and varied
contexts in which out-of-school learning takes place. A range of
different case studies discuss research methods used, challenges
faced, and ways challenges were overcome in relation to
out-of-school learning are presented, followed by a series of
critical reflections. The case studies include a range of research
foci and methods, from large-scale quantitative secondary data
analysis, through interviews and workshops, to ethnographic and
participatory methods. A series of shorter reflections drawing on
all case studies consider the negotiation of the researcher role,
building relationships, the ways knowledge is constructed, the role
of place and power, keeping hold of messiness and complexity,
ethical practice; and 'slow research'. The principles outlined in
this volume are relevant for all research on learning, whenever and
wherever it takes place - whether in school or out-of-school.
This is a powerful resource for teachers about the benefits of
parental engagement along with methods foster and develop good
practice. It is commonly agreed that engaging parents with their
child's learning is positive with wide reaching benefits. This book
articulates why parental engagement is of value and how it can be
achieved with positive results. Beyond the why and how, the book
explores what effective parental engagement is and makes explicit
the link between this and impact on the learning of the child - to
support this, practical, workable solutions and strategies are
provided through case studies. The book provides a powerful
combination of academic theory supported with quantifiable and
qualitative evidence from students, parents and schools, alongside
answers provided by those who work with the challenges of this
agenda on a daily basis. It will challenge, motivate and inspire
understanding through the political agenda, and empower and enable
schools to develop their practice.
