Separatism and Sovereignty in the New Europe - Party Politics and the Meanings of Statehood in a Supranational Context... Separatism and Sovereignty in the New Europe - Party Politics and the Meanings of Statehood in a Supranational Context (Hardcover)
Janet Laible
R1,636 Discovery Miles 16 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the question of why, despite European integration and its challenges to state sovereignty, separatist nationalism continues to thrive in European Union member states. Janet Laible argues that the EU, as a context, a set of resources, and a participatory arena, is deeply implicated in the arguments and tactics of separatists. Contrary to those who believe that European integration has reduced the incentives for separatist politics, Laible draws on evidence from contemporary Scottish and Flemish nationalism to demonstrate that the EU sustains the importance of statehood and therefore separatism, and creates new forms of political capital that nationalists employ in their struggles for self-government.

European Responses to Globalization - Resistance, Adaptation and Alternatives (Hardcover, New): Janet Laible, Henri J. Barkey European Responses to Globalization - Resistance, Adaptation and Alternatives (Hardcover, New)
Janet Laible, Henri J. Barkey
R3,524 Discovery Miles 35 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume brings together contributions from anthropologists, political scientists, economics and policy professionals to explore the institutional, economic and ideational factors that shape the ways in which Europe has adapted to, resisted, and creatively responded to the challenges of globalization. Contributors to this volume were asked to consider the extent to which globalization is driving policy-making in contemporary Europe, and the extent to which Europe itself is influencing the shape, quality and velocity of globalization.
Discussions in this volume reveal three main strategies adopted by European political actors in their efforts to respond to globalization: resistance, adaptation (and at times the mutual adaptation between the European and global environments), and the production of alternatives to global norms and practices. Yet while politicians and citizens may call for European responses to globalization, the contributors to this volume suggest that Europe and globalization already exist in a relationship of reciprocal causality, in which European responses have provoked and will continue to provoke transformations of globalized forces, and that such responses feed back intentionally and unintentionally into domestic politics, economics and culture in Europe.
This volume thus makes a provocative and innovative contribution to current academic literatures on globalization across the domains of social science.
*Contributors come from a variety of backgrounds to give this volume an inter-disciplinary approach
*Discussions reveal European strategies to respond to globalization and an analysis of these solutions
*An excellent resource for any researcherinterested in examining the relationship between Europe and globalization

Multiplicity of Nationalism in Contemporary Europe (Hardcover): Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski, Andrzej Marcin Suszycki Multiplicity of Nationalism in Contemporary Europe (Hardcover)
Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski, Andrzej Marcin Suszycki; Contributions by Hilary Bergsieker, Daniele Conversi, Emilian Kavalski, …
R3,043 Discovery Miles 30 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nationalism remains one of the key political, societal, and sociopsychological phenomena in contemporary Europe. Its significance for the justification of state policies and the stability of political systems, particularly in the context of advanced democracies, and its significance for people's basic needs for a political and cultural identity and a sense of national pride continue to challenge scholars. The international scholars assembled in this edited collection suggest that the use of three perspectives supranationalism, boundary-making nationalism, and regional nationalism may be promising as an explanatory framework for the analysis of nationalism in Europe. The book's contributors distance themselves from older dichotomies such as civic and ethnic nationalism and questions the one-sided normativity of nationalism, in particular in the concept of liberal nationalism. It argues that a promising approach to contemporary nationalism should reflect the multiplicity of nationalism. The volume is a collection of studies by a multinational group of authors with backgrounds in Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Latvia, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Ukraine and the United States."

The European Union After Brexit (Hardcover): Scott L. Greer, Janet Laible The European Union After Brexit (Hardcover)

The European Union after Brexit addresses the forces and mechanisms at work during an unprecedented transformation of the European polity. How will the EU operate without one of its key diplomatic and international military partners? What will happen to its priorities, internal balance(s) of power and legislation without the reliably liberal and Eurosceptic United Kingdom? In general, what happens when an 'ever closer union' founded on a virtuous circle of economic, social, and political integration is called into question? Though this volume is largely positive about the future of the EU after Brexit, it suggests that the process of European integration has gone into reverse, with Brexit coming amidst a series of developments that have disrupted the optimistic trajectory of integration. Covering topics such as international trade, freedom of movement, and security relations, this book answers a need for a one-stop source of strong research-based discussions of Brexit. -- .
