Excluded from the ranks of elite executive decision-makers for generations, women are now exercising power as chiefs of government and chiefs of state. As of April 2016, 112 women in 73 countries have served as presidents or prime ministers. The Gendered Executive is a critical examination of national executives, focusing on matters of identity, representation, and power. The editors and contributors to this volume address the impact of female executives through political mobilization and participation, policy- and decision-making, and institutional change. Other topics include party nomination processes, the intersectionality of race and gender, and women-centered U.S. foreign policy in southern Africa. Global Women Leaders: Studies in Feminist Political Rhetoric demonstrates the ways in which women have used political rhetoric and political discourse to provide leadership, or assert their right to leadership, on a global level. This collection fits into the robust research area of international political women and their use of language in gaining and maintaining political power. It casts a wider net in terms of discussing women's efforts to assert and preserve their roles of authority, particularly when their audiences may perceive their authority as illegitimate due to gender. Although no woman has yet served as president of the United States, women have played important roles within the executive branch and have found many ways to exert pressure on the president. In this work, presidential scholar Janet M. Martin studies the influence of women on and in the American executive branch. The Presidency and Women offers a sophisticated understanding of the nation's largest interest group and insight into the nation's most visible office. Martin studies in detail the presidencies of Kennedy through Carter, demonstrating both the substantive growth in women's involvement in policy making and the political showcasing of women appointees. Her analysis provides insight into the day-to-day interactions between the White House and outside groups, the outside political pressures for certain policy agendas, and the internal White House dynamics in response to those pressures. This book weaves the actions of presidents, their White House staff, and others in government with the actions of women and women's organizations. The result is a longitudinal political narrative of the presidency and women from 1961, to 1981, with a focus on domestic policy and the departments and agencies relating to that policy.
