Creative Metaphor, Evaluation and Emotion in Conversations about Work: Jeannette Littlemore, Sarah Turner, Penelope Tuck Creative Metaphor, Evaluation and Emotion in Conversations about Work
Jeannette Littlemore, Sarah Turner, Penelope Tuck
R1,484 Discovery Miles 14 840 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book explores the roles played by creative and conventional metaphor in expressing positive and negative evaluation within a particular workplace, drawing on interviews with 32 current and former employees of the British Civil Service. Metaphor is often used to express evaluation but relatively few studies have investigated the ways in which metaphor is used to evaluate personal emotionally charged experiences. The volume explores how metaphor serves a predominantly evaluative function, with creatively used metaphors often more likely than conventional metaphors to perform an evaluative function, particularly when the evaluation is negative or ambiguous. The findings provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between evaluation, creativity and metaphor. Examples, including military metaphors and family metaphors, show how creativity often comes through subverting the norms of use of a particular metaphor category, or altering the valence from its conventional use. The study elucidates the myriad ways in which people push at the boundaries of linguistic creativity in their efforts to describe the qualitative nature of their experiences. Demonstrating how metaphor can be a powerful tool for the nuanced expression of complex and ambiguous evaluation, this book will appeal to researchers interested in better understanding metaphor, creativity, evaluation, and workplace cultures.

The Many Faces of Creativity - Exploring Synaesthesia through a Metaphorical Lens (Paperback): Sarah Turner, Jeannette... The Many Faces of Creativity - Exploring Synaesthesia through a Metaphorical Lens (Paperback)
Sarah Turner, Jeannette Littlemore
R539 Discovery Miles 5 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It has been suggested that the study of synaesthesia can provide insights into the ability and propensity to produce creative metaphor. In this Element, the authors compare the written descriptions of sensory and emotional experiences produced by twenty synaesthetes and twenty non-synaesthetes, and explore the characteristics of their writing, particularly as they relate to metaphor. Their findings show that synaesthetes have a greater propensity to produce creative cross-sensory metaphor than non-synaesthetes, and they identify a number of factors that are associated with creative metaphor production. Their findings provide insights into the nature of creativity as it relates to metaphor, emotion, and embodied experience. They argue that the production of creative metaphor arises from strong affective reactions to sensory and emotional stimuli and that there is an embodied symbiotic relationship between sensory experiences, embodiment, emotion, hyperbole, empathy, metaphor and creativity.

Metonymy - Hidden Shortcuts in Language, Thought and Communication (Paperback): Jeannette Littlemore Metonymy - Hidden Shortcuts in Language, Thought and Communication (Paperback)
Jeannette Littlemore
R941 Discovery Miles 9 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Metonymy' is a type of figurative language used in everyday conversation, a form of shorthand that allows us to use our shared knowledge to communicate with fewer words than we would otherwise need. 'I'll pencil you in' and 'let me give you a hand' are both examples of metonymic language. Metonymy serves a wide range of communicative functions, such as textual cohesion, humour, irony, euphemism and hyperbole - all of which play a key role in the development of language and discourse communities. Using authentic data throughout, this book shows how metonymy operates, not just in language, but also in gesture, sign language, art, music, film and advertising. It explores the role of metonymy in cross-cultural communication, along with the challenges it presents to language learners and translators. Ideal for researchers and students in linguistics and literature, as well as teachers and general readers interested in the art of communication.

Metaphors in the Mind - Sources of Variation in Embodied Metaphor (Paperback): Jeannette Littlemore Metaphors in the Mind - Sources of Variation in Embodied Metaphor (Paperback)
Jeannette Littlemore
R851 Discovery Miles 8 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Abstract concepts are often embodied through metaphor. For example, we talk about moving through time in metaphorical terms, as if we were moving through space, allowing us to 'look back' on past events. Much of the work on embodied metaphor to date has assumed a single set of universal, shared bodily experiences that motivate our understanding of abstract concepts. This book explores sources of variation in people's experiences of embodied metaphor, including, for example, the shape and size of one's body, one's age, gender, state of mind, physical or linguistic impairments, personality, ideology, political stance, religious beliefs, and linguistic background. It focuses on the ways in which people's experiences of metaphor fluctuate over time within a single communicative event or across a lifetime. Combining theoretical argument with findings from new studies, Littlemore analyses sources of variation in embodied metaphor and provides a deeper understanding of the nature of embodied metaphor itself.

Figurative Language, Genre and Register (Paperback, New): Alice Deignan, Jeannette Littlemore, Elena Semino Figurative Language, Genre and Register (Paperback, New)
Alice Deignan, Jeannette Littlemore, Elena Semino
R1,687 R1,324 Discovery Miles 13 240 Save R363 (22%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume combines diverse research scenarios to present a solid framework for analysis of figurative language. Figurative Language, Genre and Register brings together discourse analysis and corpus linguistics in a cutting-edge study of figurative language in spoken and written discourse. The authors explore a diverse range of communities from chronic pain sufferers to nursery staff to present a detailed framework for the analysis of figurative language. The reader is shown how figurative language is used between members of these communities to construct their own 'world view', and how this can change with a shift in perspective. Figurative language is shown to be pervasive and inescapable, but it is also suggested that it varies significantly across genres.

Unpacking Creativity - The Power of Figurative Communication in Advertising (Hardcover): Paula Perez Sobrino, Jeannette... Unpacking Creativity - The Power of Figurative Communication in Advertising (Hardcover)
Paula Perez Sobrino, Jeannette Littlemore, Samantha Ford
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Figurative communication (the use of metaphor, metonymy, hyperbole and irony) provides economy of expression, clarity, persuasiveness, politeness, evaluation, and communication of emotions. However, it also increases the potential for misunderstanding in situations when people lack shared background knowledge. This book combines theoretical frameworks with empirical studies that measure the effectiveness of different approaches to the use of figurative language in advertisements, to show how to maximise the benefits of creative metaphor and metonymy in global advertising. It highlights how subtle differences in colour, layout, and combinations of different kinds of figurative language affect the reception and appreciation of creative advertising, shedding new light on the nature of figurative communication itself. With a balance between theory, experiments and practical case studies, this book is accessible for academics in linguistics and communication studies, as well as advertising and marketing professionals.
