This book is based on the idea that social work as a profession can
do better with advancing our mission if practitioners are
knowledgeable, skilled, critical thinkers that use research to
inform practice. This is a user-friendly, student directed book
form to help students understand the connection between knowledge,
social work research, and social work practice. This short text
will support students in their research course by offering insights
as to why research is important, how to help students understand
how research affects their own future social work practice, how
their beliefs impact successful learning, and practical tips for
being successful in research.
Although Russia and China claim to have established a "strategic
partnership," Anderson here argues that this relationship merely
overlays a diplomatic agenda established in the late 1980s. That
is, China's pragmatic and limited approach, coupled with Russia's
economic and political difficulties, have produced a Sino-Russian
strategic partnership which is unwieldy and imprecise.
Developing Ecological Consciousness is a unique environmental
studies textbook. Rather than working through a list of
environmental problems like many textbooks on the subject, the book
aims to help students awake to the awe and wonder of our planet,
begin to understand some of the challenges facing it, and explore
possibilities for action and change. As the reviews show, the book
is adopted across disciplines, including environmental studies,
biology, sociology, political science, and more.

For Canadians, hockey is the game. Shared experiences and
memories-lacing up for the first time, shinny on an outdoor rink,
Sidney Crosby's historic goal, or the one scored by Maurice
Richard-make hockey more than just a game. While the relationship
between hockey and national identity has been studied, where does
the game fit into our understanding of multiple, diverse Canadian
identities today? This interdisciplinary book considers hockey,
both as professional and amateur sport, and both in historical and
contemporary context, in relation to larger themes in Canadian
Studies, including gender, race/ethnicity, ability, sexuality,
geography, and reflects upon all aspects of hockey in Canadian
life: play, fandom, sports broadcasting, and community activism.
This interdisciplinary scholarly collection is an extension of the
"Hockey in Canada: More Than Just a Game" exhibition presented by
the Canadian Museum of History. This book is published in English.
Includes one chapter in French.

"The Illustrated Frankenstein," a faithful retelling of Mary
Shelley's novel in picture-book format, appeals as both lavish art
book and must-have reference for all children's libraries. This
groundbreaking book redeems Frankenstein's Creature from Hollywood
misinterpretations in prose and illustrations inspired by the
original descriptions of his "pale, yellow, watery eye" and
translucent yellow skin. The product of a happy mother-daughter
collaboration, "The Illustrated Frankenstein" argues in the spirit
of Mary Shelley's mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, that true education
begins at the breast; the primary horror of Shelley's novel is not
the Creature's violent acts but rather the lack of empathy and
nurturing he is afforded. Illustrations are by California artist
Barbara Harris Anderson, whose 27 richly symbolic paintings on
canvas, in acrylic, archival ink and pencil, portray a deep love of
the natural world to create narrative tension. Retelling is by the
artist's daughter, Jennifer Anderson, former Stegner Fellow in
fiction writing at Stanford University. "The Illustrated
Frankenstein" illuminates Shelley's rapid-fire intuitions on themes
such as technology and empathy, the evolution of human
consciousness, and genius, making it an exhilarating read for all
ages, from mature young reader to adult. Ultimately it captures the
life-affirming vision of the original novel, contributing art that
is a deeply sensual meditation on connectedness and the seasons of
human life.
