Dura-Europos (Hardcover, Hpod): Jennifer Baird Dura-Europos (Hardcover, Hpod)
Jennifer Baird
R2,821 Discovery Miles 28 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dura-Europos is one of Syria's most important archaeological sites. Situated on the edge of the Euphrates river, it was the subject of extensive excavations in the 1920s and 30s by teams from Yale University and the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Controlled variously by Seleucid, Parthian, and Roman powers, the site was one of impressive religious and linguistic diversity: it was home to at least nineteen sanctuaries, amongst them a Synagogue and a Christian building, and many languages, including Greek, Latin, Persian, Palmyrene, and Hebrew which were excavated on inscriptions, parchments, and graffiti. Based on the author's work excavating at the site with the Mission Franco-Syrienne d'Europos-Doura and extensive archival research, this book provides an overview of the site and its history, and traces the story of its investigation from archaeological discovery to contemporary destruction.

Pediatric Palliative Care - A Model for Exemplary Practice (Hardcover): Betty Davies, Rose Steele Pediatric Palliative Care - A Model for Exemplary Practice (Hardcover)
Betty Davies, Rose Steele; Series edited by Darcy L. Harris; Jennifer Baird; Series edited by Robert A. Neimeyer
R3,736 Discovery Miles 37 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new evidence-based model, derived from a study of parents and exemplary clinicians, offers a clear presentation of the complex process of interaction between healthcare providers and parents of seriously ill children. A unique aspect of the book is that it is based on the study of excellence rather than focusing on what did not go well. This model gives clinicians practical strategies for optimizing interactions with parents of seriously ill children. Moving beyond the prevalent idea of communication as a step-by-step procedure, this book demonstrates the complex and holistic nature of interaction in healthcare.

Ancient Graffiti in Context (Paperback): Jennifer Baird, Claire Taylor Ancient Graffiti in Context (Paperback)
Jennifer Baird, Claire Taylor
R1,610 Discovery Miles 16 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Graffiti are ubiquitous within the ancient world, but remain underexploited as a form of archaeological or historical evidence. They include a great variety of texts and images written or drawn inside and outside buildings, in public and private places, on monuments in the city, on objects used in daily life, and on mountains in the countryside. In each case they can be seen as actively engaging with their environment in a variety of ways. Ancient Graffiti in Context interrogates this cultural phenomenon and by doing so, brings it into the mainstream of ancient history and archaeology. Focusing on different approaches to and interpretations of graffiti from a variety of sites and chronological contexts, Baird and Taylor pose a series of questions not previously asked of this evidence, such as: What are graffiti, and how can we interpret them? In what ways, and with whom, do graffiti communicate? To what extent do graffiti represent or subvert the cultural values of the society in which they occur? By comparing themes across time and space, and viewing graffiti in context, this book provides a series of interpretative strategies for scholars and students of the ancient world. As such it will be essential reading for Classical archaeologists and historians alike.
