In Culinary Diplomacy's Role in the Immigrant Experience: Fiction and Memoirs of Middle Eastern Women, the emergent field of literary food studies engages with international diplomacy studies to establish books with recipes as tools of culinary diplomacy. Foundational to the argument is culinary diplomacy scholar Sam Chapple-Sokol's concept of Citizen Culinary Diplomacy which endorses public events that promote understanding of cultures and people. However, this study challenges that definition and argues that culinary fiction and memoirs are shared interactive experiences between the author, the readers, and the culture written about. Foundational to the study are twentieth century postcolonial literary theories of Homi Bhabha and Edouard Glissant and twenty-first century transnational theory of sociologists Julian Go and Ulrich Beck to recognize culinary diplomacy's vital role in international affairs. Culinary Diplomacy's Role in the Immigrant Experience examines food as metaphorical expression in literature, and the impact of time, space, and place in developing diplomatic relationships between East and West in books by Diana Abu-Jaber, Donia Bijan, Joanne Harris, and Marsha Mehran.

This little story sparkles with magic and fun. It starts on Hallowe’en
when friends Jessie and Ali find something very unexpected in their
treat bucket – a little kitten. What’s even more surprising, the kitten
is magic and can talk. They take the perfectly named Magicat home and
all sorts of adventures follow – sheds are turned into treehouses,
pancakes are cooked (almost) and the bully next door is put in his
place. It’s all made even more exciting because Magicat isn’t quite as
expert at the magic thing as he’d have you believe and some of the
spells go delightfully wrong. Purrfect for newly confident readers as
well as for those who are reluctant or dyslexic. Let’s hope there are
more adventures to come for Magicat and his friends.

A hilarious, yet tender and sincere picture book about making mistakes, owning up to them, and asking forgiveness. Every party has a pooper. You may not have wanted one. You certainly did not invite one. But, inevitably, every party will have one. So what should you do? Maybe you can interest the pooper in a game? Hopefully the pooper doesn't lay down in defeat in the middle of your Twister mat... oh, there he goes. Directly on the blue dot you needed. Perhaps you can entice the pooper with a delicious, scrumptious cake? Unless the pooper sticks his booger-y fingers directly into the layer you were most excited to eat... sigh. Oh, I know what to do! Let's. Party. HARDER. Until... things get taken too far. Then it might be time to take a step back and do the hardest thing of all: apologize. In Party Pooper, Jennifer Gray Olson tackles complex SEL themes with expertise, grace, and laugh-out-loud humor. It's a thoughtful, yet entertaining examination that has equal empathy for the party goers and, of course, the party pooper.
