The 6th International Conference on Large-Scale Scienti?c Computations (LSSC 2007) was held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, June 5-9, 2007. The conference was organized by the Institute for Parallel Processing at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Ma- ematics). Partial support was also provided from project BIS-21++ funded by the European Commission in FP6 INCO via grant 016639/2005. The conference was devoted to the 60th anniversary of Richard E. Ewing. ProfessorEwingwasawardedthemedaloftheBulgarianAcademyofSciencesfor hiscontributionstotheBulgarianmathematicalcommunityandtotheAcademy ofSciences.Hiscareerspanned33years, primarilyinacademia, butalsoincluded industry. Since 1992 he worked at Texas A&M University being Dean of Science and Vice President of Research, as well as director of the Institute for Scienti?c Computation (ISC), which he founded in 1992. Professor Ewing is internati- ally well known with his contributions in applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, and large-scale scienti?c computations. He inspired a generation of researchers with creative enthusiasm for doing science on scienti?c compu- tions. The preparatorywork on this volume was almost done when the sad news came to us: Richard E. Ewing passed away on December 5, 2007 of an apparent heart attack while driving home from the o?ce.

This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains the p- ceedings of the 3rd Conference on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications, which was held at the University of Rousse, Bulgaria, June 29-July 3, 2004. The conference was organized by the Department of Numerical Analysis and Statistics at the University of Rousse with the support of the Department of Mathematics of North Carolina State University. This conference continued the tradition of the two previous meetings (1996, 2000 in Rousse) as a forum where scientists from leading research groups from the "East" and "West" are provided with the opportunity to meet and exchange ideasandestablishresearchcooperations.Morethan100scientistsfrom28co- tries participated in the conference. A wide range of problems concerning recent achievements in numerical an- ysis and its applications in physics, chemistry, engineering, and economics were discussed. An extensive exchange of ideas between scientists who develop and studynumericalmethodsandresearcherswhousethemforsolvingreal-lifepr- lems took place during the conference. We thank the plenary lecturers, Profs. R. Lazarov and V. Thome, and the key lecturers and the organizers of the minisymposia, T. Boyadjiev, T. Donchev, E. Farkhi, M. Van Gijzen, S. Nicaise, and M. Todorov, for their contributions. We recognize the e?ort required to prepare these key lectures and organize the minisymposia. We appreciate your sharing your knowledge of modern hi- performancecomputingnumericalmethodswiththeconferenceparticipants. We also thank I. Brayanov for the help in putting together the book. The 4th Conference on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications will take place in 2008.
It is our pleasure to provide you with the volume containing the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Parallel Processing and Applied Mathe- tics, which was held in Cz, estochowa, a Polish city famous for its Jasna Gora Monastery, on September 7-10, 2003. The ?rst PPAM conference was held in 1994 and was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Cz, estochowa University of Technology in its hometown. The main idea behind the event was to provide a forum for researchers involved in applied and computational mathematics and parallel computing to exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Conference organizers hoped that this arrangement would result in cross-pollination and lead to successful research collaborations. In - dition, they hoped that the initially mostly Polish conference would grow into an international event. The fact that these assumptions were correct was proven by the growth of the event. While the ?rst conference consisted of 41 presen- tions, the conference reached 150 participants in Na l, ecz ow in 2001. In this way the PPAM conference has become one of the premiere Polish conferences, and de?nitely the most important one in the area of parallel/distributed computing andappliedmathematics. This year's meeting gathered almost 200 participants from 32 countries. A strict refereeing process resulted in the acceptance of approximately 150 cont- buted presentations, while the rejection rate was approximately 33%."

A co-organizer of this tra- tional scienti?c meeting was the Division of Numerical Analysis and Statistics of the University of Rousse. The success of the conference and the present volume in particular are the outcome of the joint e?orts of many colleagues from various institutions and organizations. First thanks to all the members of the Scienti?c Committee for their valuable contribution to forming the scienti?c face of the conference, as well as for their help in reviewing contributed papers.
