Supernatural mystery thriller starring Vincent Gallo as American priest Father Owen, who hires a rescue team to help him search for his missing friend, anthropologist Sergei (Rade Serbedzija), who disappeared while researching the existence of a fabled entrance to Hell beneath the city of Moscow. Gina (Basinger) is a married housewife and mother of four who begins an affair with Nick (Joaquim de Almeida), a Mexican-American man who is also married with a family. Maria (Jennifer Lawrence) is a teenager searching for the mother who abandoned her when she was two days old. The various strands and connections between the characters are gradually revealed throughout the film in Arriaga's signature style, previously seen in his collaborations with director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu: 'Amores Perros', '21 Grams' and 'Babel'.
