J.E. Baker's Corbett Lake Diaries will transport you on a nostalgic trip through the "Golden Age" of fly-fishing and five-star wilderness lodges from the era of Roderick Haig-Brown and General Money. Along the way you'll experience fishing for grayling in the waters that drain into the Arctic Ocean, angling for trout in the big lakes of Interior British Columbia, and searching for steelhead and salmon in the waters along the Pacific Northwest. In Baker's short stories, you'll be introduced to a host of characters that the author meets through his connection with a very special fishing lodge, Corbett Lake. These insightful anecdotes approach the world of fishing and nature with reverence and humor. You'll long to travel these highways and byways for yourself.
Baker has written a practical, procedure-oriented book with the purpose of helping individuals identify the causes of failure of performance appraisal systems in order to improve their design and operation. To do this, he describes procedures useful for identifying discrepancies in a performance appraisal system, determining if the system is being effectively implemented, and assessing whether the desired objectives are being achieved. . . . In general I would agree that Baker has met his goals, and his book will be useful to practitioners if they are interested in understandig what they should be doing to conduct effective performance appraisals. . . . an organized, generally well-written book on the performance appraisal process. "Personnel Psychology" Here is a practical, procedure-oriented guide for managers, supervisors, human resource professionals, and training and development specialists--to help identify the causes of failure of performance appraisal and supervision. Baker begins with a discussion of the need for procedures to identify the causes of failure of performance appraisal and supervision, and describes a sound practical concept of evaluation that can be used to meet this need. Systems analysis is used to describe a comprehensive performance appraisal system that contains all of the parts necessary to function effectively. The consequences of failure are also enumerated for each step of the process. Procedures are included to identify discrepancies in the system design of an organization, to determine if the parts of the system are being carried out in practice, and to determine if the desired objectives are being achieved. These procedures also include ways to determine if appropriate methods are being used to measure performance and ways to control human error. Finally, the requirements for a continuing evaluation effort are discussed.

Individual achievement in sport is often constrained by an athlete's age relative to the peers with whom they participate. A common practice within sport and educational domains is to group youth based on their chronological ages to help promote equal competition, age appropriate instruction, and ensure participant safety. While well intended, such grouping practices can often advantage relatively older children, while disadvantaging those who are relatively younger within the same age cohort. These phenomena are known as Relative Age Effects (RAEs). Relative Age Effects in Sport: International Perspectives includes chapters from internationally recognized scholars who have examined RAEs from different perspectives (e.g., sport, mental health and wellbeing, youth development). This new volume assists in communicating and mobilizing knowledge and research about RAEs, focusing on developing feasible and attractive solutions that capture the attention of practitioners and policy makers from sport governing bodies and creating a resource that is accessible to professionals within the sport and academic communities. Relative Age Effects in Sport: International Perspectives is key reading for academics and researchers in the fields of athlete development, talent identification, coaching education, health and wellbeing, mental health and related disciplines, whilst also of interest to sport industry professionals such as coaches and policy makers.
Health and Elite Sport is the first book to critically examine the relationship between participation in high performance sport and health outcomes. Drawing on theory and empirical data from a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, developmental psychology, epidemiology, and physical education, the book explores the benefits and detriments of participation in elite sport for both individuals (athletes, coaches, spectators) and communities. Written by a team of leading international sport researchers, the book examines key issues including: Talent identification and young athletes Abuse in sport Positive youth development through sport Athlete health in periods of transition Health, sport and the family Health in professional sport The Olympics, Paralympics and public health Long term effects of participation in elite sport Highlighting the connections and contradictions between high performance sport and health, the book also discusses the clear and important implications for our socio-cultural, political and developmental understanding of sport. Health and Elite Sport is fascinating and important reading for all students and researchers with an interest in youth sport, sports development, sport policy, sports coaching, exercise and health, physical education, the sociology of sport, or the sociology of health.
Masters athletes are those that continue to train and compete, typically at a high level, beyond the age of thirty-five and into middle and old age. As populations in the industrialized world get older and governments become increasingly keen to promote healthy aging and non-pharmacological interventions, the study of masters athletes enables us to better understand the benefits of, and motivations for, life-long involvement in physical activity. This is the first book to draw together current research on masters athletes. The Masters Athlete examines the evidence that cognitive skills, motor skills and physiological capabilities can be maintained at a high level with advancing age, and that age related decline is slowed in athletes that continue to train and compete in their later years. Including contributions from leading international experts in physiology, motor behaviour, psychology, gerontology and medicine, the book explores key issues such as:
Challenging conventional views of old age, and with important implications for policy and future research, this book is essential reading for students and practitioners working in sport and exercise science, aging and public health, human development, and related disciplines.

By the author of Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls and a heroine of the body positivity movement, an intimate, gutsy memoir about being a fat woman Jes Baker burst onto the body positivity scene when she created her own ads mocking Abercrombie & Fitch for discriminating against all body types--a move that landed her on the Today Show and garnered a loyal following for her raw, honest, and attitude-filled blog missives. Building on the manifesta power of Things, this memoir goes deeply into Jes's inner life, from growing up a fat girl to dating while fat. With material that will have readers laughing and crying along with Jes's experience, this new book is a natural fit with her irreverent, open-book style. A deeply personal take, Landwhale is a glimpse at life as a fat woman today, but it's also a reflection of the unforgiving ways our culture still treats fatness, all with Jes's biting voice as the guide.
