Boundaries and Belonging - States and Societies in the Struggle to Shape Identities and Local Practices (Hardcover, New): Joel... Boundaries and Belonging - States and Societies in the Struggle to Shape Identities and Local Practices (Hardcover, New)
Joel S. Migdal
R2,998 R2,735 Discovery Miles 27 350 Save R263 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This interdisciplinary volume maintains the importance of a spatial understanding of society and history, but suggests a way of conceiving of borders and space that goes beyond a school map of states. Its subject is the struggle among differing spatial logics, or mental maps. It is concerned with the meaning that state borders hold for people, but recognizes that such meaning varies and is contested by other social formations. To what degree do state borders encase the mechanisms that make the decisive rules governing people's lives and to what extent do they give way to other rulemakers? To what extent do states circumscribe the communities to which people feel attached and to what extent do they intersect with other communities of belonging? These essays home in on the struggles and conflicting demands on people, given that state borders are not automatically pre-eminent and that other spatial logics demand attention.

Joel S. Migdal
R2,406 R2,199 Discovery Miles 21 990 Save R207 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The essays in this book trace the development of Joel Migdal's "state-in-society" approach. The essays situate the approach within the classic literature in political science, sociology, and related disciplines but present a new model for understanding state-society relations. It allies parts of the state and groups in society against other such coalitions, determines how societies and states create and maintain distinct ways of structuring day-to-day life, the nature of the rules that govern people's behavior, whom they benefit and whom they disadvantage, which sorts of elements unite people and which divide them, and what shared meaning people hold about their relations with others and their place in the world.

Shifting Sands - The United States in the Middle East (Hardcover): Joel S. Migdal Shifting Sands - The United States in the Middle East (Hardcover)
Joel S. Migdal
R1,006 Discovery Miles 10 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Joel S. Migdal revisits the approach U.S. officials have adopted toward the Middle East since World War II, which paid scant attention to tectonic shifts in the region. After the war, the United States did not restrict its strategic model to the Middle East. Beginning with Harry S. Truman, American presidents applied a uniform strategy rooted in the country's Cold War experience in Europe to regions across the globe, designed to project America into nearly every corner of the world while limiting costs and overreach.

The approach was simple: find a local power that could play Great Britain's role in Europe after the war, sharing the burden of exercising power, and establish a security alliance along the lines of NATO. Yet regional changes following the creation of Israel, the Free Officers Coup in Egypt, the rise of Arab nationalism from 1948 to 1952, and, later, the Iranian Revolution and the Egypt-Israel peace treaty in 1979 complicated this project. Migdal shows how insufficient attention to these key transformations led to a series of missteps and misconceptions in the twentieth century. With the Arab uprisings of 2009 through 2011 prompting another major shift, Migdal sees an opportunity for the United States to deploy a new, more workable strategy, and he concludes with a plan for gaining a stable foothold in the region.

The Palestinian People - A History (Paperback): Baruch Kimmerling, Joel S. Migdal The Palestinian People - A History (Paperback)
Baruch Kimmerling, Joel S. Migdal
R765 R705 Discovery Miles 7 050 Save R60 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a timely reminder of how the past informs the present, Baruch Kimmerling and Joel Migdal offer an authoritative account of the history of the Palestinian people from their modern origins to the Oslo peace process and beyond.

Palestinians struggled to create themselves as a people from the first revolt of the Arabs in Palestine in 1834 through the British Mandate to the impact of Zionism and the founding of Israel. Their relationship with the Jewish people and the State of Israel has been fundamental in shaping that identity, and today Palestinians find themselves again at a critical juncture. In the 1990s cornerstones for peace were laid for eventual Palestinian-Israeli coexistence, including mutual acceptance, the renunciation of violence as a permanent strategy, and the establishment for the first time of Palestinian self-government. But the dawn of the twenty-first century saw a reversion to unmitigated hatred and mutual demonization. By mid-2002 the brutal violence of the Intifada had crippled Palestine's fledgling political institutions and threatened the fragile social cohesion painstakingly constructed after 1967. Kimmerling and Migdal unravel what went right--and what went wrong--in the Oslo peace process, and what lessons we can draw about the forces that help to shape a people. The authors present a balanced, insightful, and sobering look at the realities of creating peace in the Middle East.

The Everyday Life of the State - A State-in-Society Approach (Paperback): Adam White The Everyday Life of the State - A State-in-Society Approach (Paperback)
Adam White; Foreword by Joel S. Migdal
R749 Discovery Miles 7 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Today there are more states controlling more people than at any other point in history. We live in a world shaped by the authority of the state. Yet the complexion of state authority is patchy and uneven. While it is almost always possible to trace the formal rules governing human interaction to the statute books of one state or another, in reality the words in these books often have little bearing upon what is happening on the ground. Their meanings are intentionally and unintentionally misrepresented by those who are supposed to enforce them and by those who are supposed to obey them, generating a range of competing authorities, voices, and allegiances. "The Everyday Life of the State" explores this "everyday" transformation of state authority into multiple scripts, narratives, and political activities. Drawing upon case studies from across the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia, the chapters in this book investigate the many ways in which those subjects traditionally regarded as being weak, passive, and obedient manage not only to resist the authority of state actors but to actively subvert and appropriate it, in the process making, unmaking, and remaking the boundaries between state and society over and over again. Collectively, these chapters make an important contribution to the expanding literature on "everyday politics."

The "state-in-society" approach used in this volume has been developed by political scientist Joel S. Migdal, the Robert F. Philip Professor of International Studies in the University of Washington's Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.

Adam White is the author of "The Politics of Private Security: Regulation, Reform and Re-Legitimation." The contributors include Senem Aslan, Lauren L. Basson, Ceren Belge, Mary Alice Haddad, Iza Hussin, Arda Ibikoglu, Ahmet T. Kuru, Y ksel Sezgin, Benjamin Smith, Pamela J. Stumpo, Maha El-Taji Daghash, Nicole F. Watts, and Patricia J. Woods.

"The coherence of the collection is outstanding. The state-in-society approach that informs the individual contributions and the volume as a whole provides a strong foundation that holds together analyses that cover a wide geographical scope." -Resat Kasaba, University of Washington"

Peasants, Politics and Revolution - Pressures Toward Political and Social Change in the Third World (Hardcover): Joel S. Migdal Peasants, Politics and Revolution - Pressures Toward Political and Social Change in the Third World (Hardcover)
Joel S. Migdal
R3,748 Discovery Miles 37 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

During the last quarter century, peasant participation in politics has increased markedly in parts of Latin America and Asia. Why the poor and vulnerable peasant population has chosen to leave the confines of the village for political activity and at times for sustained revolution is the question this book explores. The author draws on informal interviews and observation of peasants in Mexico and India and on fifty-one community studies of peasants in Asia and Latin America compiled by ethnographers in the last forty years. He suggests that severe economic crises have driven peasants to roles in the larger economy outside the village, where they are initially attracted to politics by material incentives. Strong Societies and Weak States - State-Society Relations and State Capabilities in the Third World (Paperback): Joel S. Migdal Strong Societies and Weak States - State-Society Relations and State Capabilities in the Third World (Paperback)
Joel S. Migdal
R1,051 Discovery Miles 10 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why do many Asian, African, and Latin American states have such difficulty in directing the behavior of their populations--in spite of the resources at their disposal? And why do a small number of other states succeed in such control? What effect do failing laws and social policies have on the state itself? In answering these questions, Joel Migdal takes a new look at the role of the state in the third world. Strong Societies and Weak States offers a fresh approach to the study of state-society relations and to the possibilities for economic and political reforms in the third world. In Asia, Africa, and Latin America, state institutions have established a permanent presence among the populations of even the most remote villages. A close look at the performance of these agencies, however, reveals that often they operate on principles radically different from those conceived by their founders and creators in the capital city. Migdal proposes an answer to this paradox: a model of state-society relations that highlights the state's struggle with other social organizations and a theory that explains the differing abilities of states to predominate in those struggles.

Rules and Rights in the Middle East - Democracy, Law, and Society (Paperback): Ellis J. Goldberg, Resat Kasaba, Joel S. Migdal Rules and Rights in the Middle East - Democracy, Law, and Society (Paperback)
Ellis J. Goldberg, Resat Kasaba, Joel S. Migdal
R661 Discovery Miles 6 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a series of essays by an international group of scholars and policy makers, this book provides the first sustained look at democracy and democratic movements in the Middle East. Moving beyond a concern with the growth of Islamicist movements and nationalist states, the authors probe the historical experiences of the last hundred years and the social conflict over the past decade centering on democratic structures and processes from North Africa to Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. The essays explore from theoretical, descriptive, and political perspectives questions of democracy, freedom, and rule of law in a region that is usually thought of as lacking in all these respects. In recent years there has been a marked growth in the number and influences of social movements and organizations working to expand social, political, and civil rights, and to constrain the power of the states in many countries in the Middle East. At the same time many of the regimes in the area have introduced practices and institutions designed to make their rule more democratic in order to enhance their domestic and international standing and legitimacy, as well as to spur economic growth.
