Animals have been fused with technology in this exciting children's
novel, which has been described as Watership Down meets The
Terminator - an action-packed, animal fable mash-up. At the newly
built Greenacres Military Base, Professor Windar's amazing team of
cyborgs are unveiled. Their purpose: to support the UK's fight
against global terrorism. But when his deadliest prototype
malfunctions, the inhabitants of Greenacres find themselves
entangled in a fight for survival like no other. Claws clasp,
feathers fry, and microchips meddle as a new breed of hero is born.

This book explores the theoretical foundations of gamification in
learning and education. It has become increasingly difficult to
engage and motivate students. Gamification not only makes learning
interesting, but also allows game players to solve problems and
learn lessons through repeated attempts and failures. This
"positive failure" can motivate students to attempt a difficult
mission. Chapters in this volume cover topics such as the
definition and characteristics of gamification, gamification in
learning and education, theories, research on gamification,
framework, strategy, and cases.
Continuing a three-decade tradition, The State of the Parties 7th
edition brings together leading experts to evaluate change and
continuity in American electoral politics. Political parties in
America have never been more contentious and divided than they are
right now. Even splits within the parties themselves have the power
to elevate relatively unknown candidates to power and topple
established incumbents. With sections devoted to polarization and
the electorate, polarization and political elites, tea party
politics, super PACS, and partisan resources and partisan
activities, the contributors survey the American political
landscape. They pay special attention to polarization between and
within the parties in the aftermath of the 2012 election,
demographic changes to America's political parties, the effects of
new media and campaign finance laws on national and local electoral
results, the Tea Party's rise and, as always, the implications of
all these factors on future policymaking and electoral prospects.
The State of the Parties 7th edition offers an indispensable guide
to American politics for scholars, students, and practitioners.

The fourth part of a set of four volumes which seeks to provide an
historical and theoretical perspective for consideration of theory
and practice in conflict resolution and provention.;The author puts
forward an adequate theory of behaviour which they contend is
needed to provide a basis for the analysis and resolution of
conflict. The other volumes cover human needs theory and readings
in management, settlement, and resolution in addition to a detailed
description of the facilitated conflict resolution process.;There
is a growing public awareness of the need for alternatives to
deterrence and coercion in the handling of conflicts at all social
levels. The study of problem solving in human relationships, is
relevant to a wide variety of careers, in addition to the training
of facilitators of conflict resolution. It is a basic training for
those engaged in business and institutional organization, in public
policy and in public administration.;This book is a general survey
of management, settlement and confict resolution practices.
Conflict, its resolution and provention, comprises an
a-disciplinary study, that is, a synthesis that goes beyond
separate disciplines, beyond interactio

Of the over 33 million refugees and internally displaced people in
the world today, a disproportionate percentage are found in Africa.
Most have been driven from their homes by armed strife, displacing
people into settings that fail to meet standards for even basic
human dignity. Protection of the human rights of these people is
highly uncertain and unpredictable. Many refugee service agencies
agree advocacy on behalf of the displaced is a key aspect of their
task. But those working in the field are so pressed by urgent
crises that they can rarely analyze the requirements of advocacy
systematically. Yet advocacy must go beyond international law to
human rights as an ethical standard to prevent displaced people
from falling through the cracks of our conflicted world."Refugee
Rights: Ethics, Advocacy, and Africa" draws upon David Hollenbach,
SJ's work as founder and director of the Center for Human Rights
and International Justice at Boston College to provide an
analytical framework for vigorous advocacy on behalf of refugees
and internally displaced people. Representing both religious and
secular perspectives, the contributors are scholars, practitioners,
and refugee advocates - all of whom have spent time 'on the ground'
in Africa. The book begins with the poignant narrative of Abebe
Feyissa, an Ethiopian refugee who has spent over fifteen years in a
refugee camp from hell. Other chapters identify the social and
political conditions integral to the plight of refugees and
displaced persons. Topics discussed include the fundamental right
to freedom of movement, gender roles and the rights of women, the
effects of war, and the importance of reconstruction and
reintegration following armed conflict. The book concludes with
suggestions of how humanitarian groups and international
organizations can help mitigate the problem of forced displacement
and enforce the belief that all displaced people have the right to
be treated as their human dignity demands. "Refugee Rights" offers
an important analytical resource for advocates and students of
human rights. It will be of particular value to practitioners
working in the field.
This epistle, containing letter that is addressed to all survivors
emerging from shelters, concentrates the mind in a bomb shelter
awaiting the 'All Clear' after a thermonuclear war. It is directed
toward defining the problem of policy making and concerned with war
avoidance policies.
This volume seeks to analyze what is wrong with residential care
and proposes how it can be managed well. It covers the economic and
political contexts of residential care, the practicalities of
managing care, and the role of outside organisations, including
inspection, local authorities, charities, private care companies
and housing associations. Examples demonstrate both how managers
can succeed and how the forces of mismanagement obstruct them.
Residential Homes do not have to be so bad; they can be - and occasionally are - the very best places for people to live. There have been many occasions in the last thirty years when residential care has seemed to be on the brink of a breakthrough - when we could have converted the service into something to be universally proud of. Managing Residential Care analyses what is wrong and proposes how residential care can be managed well. It covers the economic and political contexts of residential care, the practicalities of managing care, and the role of outside organisations, including inspection, local authorities, charities, private care companies and housing associations. Extended examples, throughout the text, demonstrate both how managers can succeed and how the powerful forces of mismanagement obstruct them. Managing Residential Care will be essential reading for residential care practitioners and managers, training officers and policy makers, and lecturers and students on social work and social care courses.
Recent residential care revelations, recent legislation and policy
directions (The Children's Act, Community Care), and the
introduction of training courses mean that residential care
practice is under national focus. "The Handbook of Residential
Care" addresses the particular problems experienced by residential
staff by bringing together many areas of work, different jobs and
responsibilities, in a variety of perspectives and settings and
addresses the challenges they face. In this practical guide, the
author has brought together a combination of real examples and case
studies, analysis, guidance and reflective discussion to present a
complete examination of working in a residential setting, both for
the elderly and for children. John Burton examines the fundamentals
of the work such as time management, keeping a diary, first contact
with a new resident, creating the right environment, building
relationships with children, and management styles. He also gives
specific examples of the day-to-day running of a residential centre
such as the instigation of a non-smoking policy and the management
of bed times in children's residential care.

The most surprising feature of the Muslim traditions on the
collection of the Qur'an is their denial of any role in the process
to Muhammad himself. The merit of assembling and preserving the
record of the momentous divine revelations has been variously
ascribed to some half dozen of the Prophet's associates or
Companions, and these ascriptions have usually been treated as
hopelessly conflicting. Dr Burton argues that they are in perfect
agreement. Their sole function was the deliberate exclusion of
Mohammed. Dr Burton demonstrates in his analysis of the original
Muslim sources a series of subtle distinctions, the most
significant being that between the Qur'an document and source. This
1977 analysis of early Muslim traditions challenges existing
scholarly interpretations, and Dr Burton argues his case with a
wealth of detail. It is a book which all students of Islam will
find required reading.

NUNEATON MEMORIES is sure to fascinate anyone who has grown up or
lived in Nuneaton over the past fifty years. It shows the enormous
changes that have taken place in the town since the Second World
War, as it adapted to the needs of increasing car ownership and
changes in social and economic conditions. The photographs come
from the huge collection taken by Reg Bull and deposited at the
Warwickshire County Record Office after his death in 1999. Reg Bull
came from a local family; in fact his grandfather founded the
Nuneaton Chronicle in 1868. Reg worked for the Coal Board but from
1950 his passion was photography. He collected local pictures from
other sources, and took thousands of his own. John Burton is well
known for his books and slide shows. In this, his fifth book, he
has selected over 230 pictures from the Reg Bull Collection, and
arranged them to show the changing face of post-war Nuneaton. He
provides a commentary and interpretation of the photographs to
accompany the changes recorded through the lens of Reg Bull.
