Policing: Toward an Unknown Future (Hardcover): John Crank Policing: Toward an Unknown Future (Hardcover)
John Crank; Series edited by Dilip K Das; Edited by Colleen Kadleck
R2,818 Discovery Miles 28 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The enclosed papers are the culmination of a project Dr. John Crank and Dr. Colleen Kadleck carried out assessing issues facing the police into the early 21st century. The papers are future oriented, in the sense that they anticipate trends visible today. Everywhere, the contributing scholars found that the organizational concept, practice, and function of the police were undergoing transition. Yet, the seeming state-level hardening of the police function was ubiquitous. Two themes were noteworthy. On the one hand, in developing or 'second world' countries, police face endemic problems of corruption, organized crime, and drugs. Police, in response, are undergoing centralization and intensification of law enforcement activities. In countries with first world economies - Canada, the United States, and Australia - contributors discovered trends toward expansion of the police function, a trend described by Brodeur as toward 'high policing'. It reflects the growing reliance on surveillance for crime control and for the tracking of minority, indigenous, and immigrant populations in crime prevention efforts. The results suggest that governments, sometimes encouraged by their citizenry, seem increasingly to rely on the police to deal with a broad array of social as well as criminal problems. This book was originally published as a special issue of Police Practice and Research.

Imagining Justice (Hardcover): John Crank Imagining Justice (Hardcover)
John Crank
R5,411 Discovery Miles 54 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Imagining Justice seeks to move away from normative thinking about justice, particularly in the area of justice education, suggesting that what is needed today is a way to think about the enterprise of justice that will capture its full potential. By providing an introduction to the intellectual potential of the field of justice, we can acknowledge that the field is wider than formerly recognized, and ultimately imagine the full richness that justice can encompass.

Outstanding Book Award Winner of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
The author leads the reader on a fascinating excursion through the literatures of mainstream criminology and criminal justice, but more importantly he weaves into the discussion insights from anthropology, history, philosophy, organization studies, multiculturalism, feminism, and much more.

Crime, Violence, and Global Warming (Hardcover): John Crank, Linda Jacoby Crime, Violence, and Global Warming (Hardcover)
John Crank, Linda Jacoby
R5,843 Discovery Miles 58 430 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Crime, Violence, and Global Warming introduces the many connections between climate change and criminal activity. Conflict over natural resources can escalate to state and non-state actors, resulting in wars, asymmetrical warfare, and terrorism. Crank and Jacoby apply criminological theory to each aspect of this complicated web, helping readers to evaluate conflicting claims about global warming and to analyze evidence of the current and potential impact of climate change on conflict and crime. Beginning with an overview of the science of global warming, the authors move on to the links between climate change, scarce resources, and crime. Their approach takes in the full scope of causes and consequences, present and future, in the United States and throughout the world. The book concludes by looking ahead at the problem of forecasting future security implications if global warming continues or accelerates. This fresh approach to the criminology of climate change challenges readers to examine all sides of this controversial question and to formulate their own analysis of our planet's future.

Free and Moving Boundary Problems (Paperback, Revised): John Crank Free and Moving Boundary Problems (Paperback, Revised)
John Crank
R4,873 Discovery Miles 48 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Free and moving boundary problems occur in such varied subjects as hydrology, heat flow, metallurgy, molecular diffusion, flame propagation, steel and glass production, and oil drilling and mathematical finance. This book presents a comprehensive account of the mathematical formulation of such problems and many new methods of solution. Computer methods, which allow multi-dimensional, multi-phase practical problems to be solved, are discussed. This book was written because of the upsurge of interest and research in this field. It bridges the gap between the various interested parties (including mathematicians, numerical and financial analysts, hydrologists, mechanical and chemical engineers, soil scientists, molecular biologists, physicists, metallurgists, and material scientists). The examples given are drawn from a variety of these fields. "... a broad but detailed account on mathematical and numerical methods for free and moving boundary problems that will be accessible to researchers both in the applied sciences and in applied mathematics.", C M Elliot, SIAM, Dec. 1988
