John M. Legge shows the many ways in which the real world diverges
from economics textbooks. He argues that mainstream economic theory
took a disastrous turn 140 years ago, when it attempted to use
calculus to explain human behaviour. A real economy involves people
who are not variables in equations. This error led to a second,
mainstream economics becoming obsessed with equilibrium. However,
constant change is the reality and one cannot explain the present
without understanding the path taken to get here. This book
presents economics in historical context. It includes a short
account of the contributions by some of the key figures in economic
theory, starting with Adam Smith. Smith placed great weight on
morality: he believed that economic activity took place in a
society and could not be justified except insofar as it advanced
the interests of that society. Too many economists have come to
believe that the interests of society can be measured by a number:
that if a policy change raises GDP it is justified, whatever its
impact on people. Legge places the economy within society, and
society within the environment, explaining that every significant
decision has a social and environmental impact, as well as an
economic dimension. Seeking to provide answers to students,
professional business managers, and those interested in the
political process, this work addresses the gap between theory and
reality.

This new title from the authors of A World of Rail - John Legg and
Ian Peaty - takes us on a fascinating tour of Britain's rail-borne
transport sytem, or rather systems, as it covers a wide variety of
locations and gauges. The variety of rolling stock is a feature
including of both passenger and freight vehcles. Locations range
from London's Underground to the Bass Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent
and from Ford's Dagenham plant to the whisky distilleries of
Scotland. This is a book that takes the reader off the beaten
track, over many years, to provide a wide variety of images from
all sorts of unusual and rarely seen passenger and freight sevices
the length and breadth of the country. Images from the earliest
days of railways right up to the modern day scene are accompanied
by informative text and detailed captions. This is a book that is
sure to provide variety.
Railway Reflections - Author's summary My co-author, Ian Peaty and
I have been close friends for over 50 years. During that time we
have accumulated an enormous amount of railway photographs and
research with respect to our travels at home and abroad, both
singularly and together with our families.Although Ian has had
eight books published covering various aspects of railways and
brewing, it seemed like the time was right to share those
photographs together with the appropriate text and captions. This
book has not been written around a mountain of technical data, but
we believe contains a good balance of information to be of interest
to both railway enthusiast and those of us who just enjoy "riding
the train". After all, a railway is not just the locomotive, but
includes everything that makes the railway "tick".One of the more
important aspects of the book is that we have travelled to other
countries where the influence of the British railway pioneers is
still to be found, as I am sure that many people who are not
railway enthusiasts would not appreciate, but would be surprised
and interested to know that fact. Let's have a look at what is
included: * Some great photographs, most of which are high quality,
plus some of Ian's colourful paintings. * We cover Europe, North,
Central and South America, Africa, and Asia, which represents 34%
of the text and photos. * In a couple of instances we have looked
at countries in greater depth were there are a number of different
and interesting gauges and networks. * Photos showing signs,
notices and loco number plates. * There are also photos of railway
bridges and tunnel So, we hope we can offer a well thought out,
well balanced book that would be of interest to a broad readership
including both railway enthusiasts and those who just like
trains! To let others enjoy some of our unique photos of our railway
experiences from around the world. To hopefully kindle a lasting
interest in railways for those of us who have, to date, just taken
railways for granted. Railways are currently enjoying a renaissance
and there are an increasing number of companies now offering a
whole range of railway trips and holidays at both home and abroad.
Long may it last!
