Reports of natural disasters fill the media with regularity. Places in the world are affected by natural disaster events every day. Such events include earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis, wildfires - the list could go on for considerable length. In the 1990s there was a concentrated focus on natural disaster information and mitigation during the International Decade for Natural Disasters Reduction (IDNDR). The information was technical and provided the basis for major initiatives in building structures designed for seismic safety, slope stability, severe storm warning systems, and global monitoring and reporting. Mitigation, or planning in the event that natural hazards prevalent in a region would suddenly become natural disasters, was a major goal of the decade-long program. During the IDNDR, this book was conceptualized, and planning for its completion began. The editors saw the need for a book that would reach a broad range of readers who were not actively or directly engaged in natural disasters relief or mitigation planning, but who were in decision-making positions that provided an open window for addressing natural disaster issues. Those people were largely elected public officials, teachers, non-governmental organization staff, and staff of faith-based organizations. Those people, for the most part, come to know very well the human and physical characteristics of the place in which they are based. The status of geography in school curricula varies across the globe. Geography, as a discrete subject, has, in some countries, established a strong position in both primary and secondary schools while in others it has a weaker position, often a component of integrated and cross-curricular arrangements. Globally, the trend is for geography's status to be challenged. A central theme of this book is the location of geography in school curricula with particular reference to centrality and marginality. A second theme relates to the subject status of geography. A third theme relates to the spirit and purpose of school geography and the traditions that underpin the subject and how these are changing. A fourth theme relates to the way geography is being seen by curriculum planners as contributing to the achievement of governmental aims for society in general. Talking about sexuality in schools is discomforting at best and dangerous at worst because no other topic is as sensitive or emotionally charged for parents, students, employers and school administrators. This is particularly so for teachers who are involved with sexuality education in Australian Catholic schools and their clientele. No issue evokes more controversy in the contemporary Catholic Church than sexuality. This book explores conceptions of sexuality education with the specific intention to describe the qualitatively different ways in which sexuality education is experienced or understood by middle-years teachers in Catholic schools. The study provides a new insight into possible directions for sexuality education and sheds further light on its relationship with religious and moral education. It will be especially useful to professionals in health, counselling and education in both religiously affiliated and secular institutions as well as to everyone with an interest in fostering the healthy development of young people in the 21st century.
Since the 1970's environmental education has received much attention in many countries from policy makers and educators interested in merging the complexities of the terms environment and education. And while environmental education has expanded its presence in pedagogical and didactic endeavor, its history also demonstrates contested ideological foundations regarding its implementation in schools. Moreover there is scant literature available examining student conceptions of environmental education, environmentalism and/or sustainability. This book, therefore, provides insights into this important area via an international study examining Australian and Canadian student's conceptions of environmental education. Through this study it becomes apparent that for the students who participated in this research project, environmental education is, at is best irrelevant, and at its worst depressing.
Although the products of globalization are far from new, globalization as a process in the Pacific-Asian Region is both dynamic and problematic.
