Carmina Gadelica - Hymns and Incantations (Paperback, Revised): Alexander Carmichael Carmina Gadelica - Hymns and Incantations (Paperback, Revised)
Alexander Carmichael; Introduction by John MacInnes
R673 R563 Discovery Miles 5 630 Save R110 (16%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Carmina Gadelica is the most comprehensive collection of poems and prayers from the Gaelic tradition of oral poetry. Gathered by Alexander Carmichael, in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, 'from Arran to Caithness, from Perth to St. Kilda'. The poems had been handed down through the generations in a living oral tradition. This tradition and the way of life which sustained it have now disappeared but these poems and prayers live on to remind us of the faith of the unknown poets who composed them. Previously only available as a bilingual text in six volumes, this one-volume edition in English only is an important contribution to the wider awareness of Celtic literature. John MacInnes' introduction puts the poems in the context of the life and folklore of the Gaelic community.

Sgeulachd Thomais Piseag (Scottish Gaelic, Hardcover): Beatrix Potter Sgeulachd Thomais Piseag (Scottish Gaelic, Hardcover)
Beatrix Potter; Illustrated by Beatrix Potter; Translated by Catriona Mhoireach; Edited by Margaret Bennett, Ian Macdonald, …

From early childhood Beatrix Potter loved Perthshire as her father, Rupert Potter, rented Dalguise House every summer from 1871 to 1881. Highland Perthshire, with its exceptional natural beauty, was not only an idyllic setting for a child drawn to nature but also, in those days, was part of Gaeldom. English had become the language of commerce, but Gaelic was spoken among country folk and gentry alike. Queen Victoria advised the Murrays of Atholl to keep a Gaelic-speaking nursemaid in Blair Castle when she and Prince Albert first visited. They so loved the culture that Queen Victoria appointed a Gaelic bard to translate her Leaves from the Journal of a Life in the Highlands, from 1848-1861. The Scottish Highlands has long been the subject of writers and bards including one of Europe's most celebrated, Duncan MacIntyre, (1724 - 1812). His Oran an t- Samhraidh (Song of Summer) details over forty species of flora, many of which feature in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In 1892, while holidaying in Dunkeld, Beatrix Potter wrote her first draft of Peter Rabbit. Not surprisingly, Mr McGregor appears, as Perthshire is home of the ancient Clan Gregor. Now, at last, Gaelic-speaking children may be delight by reading the original collection of Peter Rabbit Books.

The Isle of Skye, off the northwestern coast of Scotland, is the largest of the Inner Hebrides. "Be the many marvelous tales regarding Skye's heroes and heroines of prehistoric times true or not, a spirit of warlike enterprise has existed in the island from the earliest period of which we have any authentic record, and has been fostered by passing events (involving the strife of arms) century after century up to the present day. But it is with the share that 'the Brave Sons of Skye' took in Britain's great wars in foreign lands that this work more particularly deals." Biographical sketches, of varying length and primarily focused on military careers, are grouped by surname and place of residence. Surnames include: Beaton or Bethune, Campbell, Elder, MacAlister (tracing "their origin to Alasdair, or Alexander, a son of Angus Mor of the Clan Donald"), MacDonald, MacInnes, MacIvor, MacKinnon, MacLean, MacLeod, MacQueen, Martins, and Nicholson. Dr. John Grant, Sgt. John MacBeth, Col. Sir John MacRa, Dr. Alexander Morrison, Pvt. Hugh Robertson, the Battle of Mahidpore, the Battle of Moodkee, and the Battle of Inkerman are covered. Numerous portraits, a list of original subscribers, brief excerpts from letters and other documents, and a full-name index augment this work.

A Guide to Planning and Support for Individuals Who Are Deafblind (Paperback): John McInnes A Guide to Planning and Support for Individuals Who Are Deafblind (Paperback)
John McInnes
R1,746 Discovery Miles 17 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this ground-breaking collection, leading experts in the field address the problems of parents, intervenors, and professionals who work with people who have been deafblind since birth or from a very early age. Individuals who are congenitally deafblind face the same challenges as those who become deafblind later in life, but they have not had the same opportunity to develop the communications skills and a conceptual base needed to construct an understanding of the world. The contributors address identification of deafblindness, planning and intervention, development, family support, and education. Just as McInnes and Treffry's "Deafblind Infants and Children" helped to change the approach to and the perception of deafblind children, this collection will assist in fostering a new approach to the education of and support for older children, youth and adults who are deafblind. An essential part of this process is to set forth standards for program development, implementation, and evaluation, which this volume aims to accomplish. It will make an essential contribution to the expanding field of services for the deafblind population of all ages, and to the improved understanding of parents, family members, and professionals who support them.
