Drawing on studies from Africa, Asia and South America, this book
provides empirical evidence and conceptual explorations of the
gendered dimensions of food security. It investigates how food
security and gender inequity are conceptualized within
interventions, assesses the impacts and outcomes of
gender-responsive programs on food security and gender equity and
addresses diverse approaches to gender research and practice that
range from descriptive and analytical to strategic and
transformative. The chapters draw on diverse theoretical
perspectives, including transformative learning, feminist theory,
deliberative democracy and technology adoption. As a result, they
add important conceptual and empirical material to a growing
literature on the challenges of gender equity in agricultural
production. A unique feature of this book is the integration of
both analytic and transformative approaches to understanding gender
and food security. The analytic material shows how food security
interventions enable women and men to meet the long-term
nutritional needs of their households, and to enhance their
economic position. The transformative chapters also document
efforts to build durable and equitable relationships between men
and women, addressing underlying social, cultural and economic
causes of gender inequality. Taken together, these combined
approaches enable women and men to reflect on gendered divisions of
labor and resources related to food, and to reshape these divisions
in ways which benefit families and communities. Co-published with
the International Development Research Centre.
Laughter and power are here examined in a variety of contexts,
ranging from the satires of Renaissance Humanism through to the
polemics of contemporary journalism. How do the powerful use
laughter as a cultural weapon which re-inforces their position? How
do the powerless use laughter as a last resort in their
self-defence? Sixteenth-century intellectuals applied their satires
to a campaign against intolerance. Seventeenth-century absolutism
demanded of comedy that it serve its interests. Yet subversive
humour survived, even at the court, and led through the
Enlightenment to its apogee in the black humour of Sade.
Twentieth-century experimental fiction owes that trend a conscious
debt. Meanwhile an aesthetic tradition, represented here by
Flaubert, Beckett and Queneau, incites a laughter which releases
tension rather than raising awareness. As humour theorists,
Bergson, Freud and Koestler help focus these concerns.
Pointing the way to the future of research and development in
relation to cycling as a mode of transport, this book investigates
some of the significant recent developments in the technology,
provision for, and take up of cycling in various parts of the
world. Tensions at the heart of the nature of cycling remain: on
the one hand cycling is frequently viewed as being a risky
activity, while on the other hand it is seen as being a way of
allowing populations to live healthier lives. Reviewing this
dichotomy, the authors in this book consider the ways that cycling
is planned and promoted. This is done partly in relation to these
issues of risk and health, but also from the broader perspective of
behavioural response to the changing nature of cycling. A section
on methodologies is also included which outlines the current
state-of-the art and points a way to future research.
This book explores the reasons for difficulties in making cycling
mainstream in many cultures, despite its claims for being one of
the most sustainable forms of transport. The topic is looked at
from the varying perspectives of people, the environment and the
economy with multi-disciplinary contributions from the UK, Denmark,
the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Australia, China and USA.
Initially, it examines the cultural development of cycling in
countries with high use and the differences in use between
different sub-groups of the population. It then explores issues of
urban form, and the attributes of the network and the system for
appropriately accommodating cycle users. Cross-cultural issues are
once again investigated through an exposition of research in
developing countries and the environment in which scheme promoters
and users operate. The book draws to a close with an exploration of
state-of-the-art thinking on demand model.

Is there a gap between how you'd like things to be and how they are?
It may be a small gap or a freaking enormous ravine, but that gap is, in fact, probably the primary cause of pain and unhappiness for most people. What if you said 'F**k It' to the idea of how your life should be and found peace with your life just as it is? That's going to shake things up and take the edge of your pain and discomfort way more than any pill could.
John C. Parkin, the maestro of saying 'F**k It', realized as he worked with people on his retreats that we can close that gap not by striving to be different, changing the world or even learning how to peaceful - but by saying 'F**k It' and making our peace with life, just as it is. Being at peace with life doesn't necessarily mean being peaceful, and it certainly isn't being passive; it means embracing life in all its colours.
This is a radical message that can create radical shifts in your perception of life, just as it is.
If every therapist and psychotherapist on the planet could repeat this to their clients, like a mantra, again and again, there would be fewer therapists and psychotherapists. Because it works. Very quickly. Realising that what you're worrying about and stressing over doesn't really matter so much in the grand scheme of things is the door to freedom and healing. And the little profanity 'F**k It' is the key to that door. Ask anyone who's come close to death, or lost someone close to them, or discovered they have a serious disease and they'll say the same thing: that the little things don't matter, F**k It... enjoy life in every moment for what it is, not what you want it to be... worry less, live more... remember what's important and forget the rest.
John and Gaia have taught F**k It Retreats in Italy and around the world since 2005. They have taught thousands of people how to say F**k It: how to ease up, let go, and feel the natural flow in their lives. F**k It Therapy makes available for the first time the process they teach during their week-long retreats. With their six-part process, you are guided through how to deeply relax and let go, then how to carry this out into your life. You find out about the F**k It State and how to access it, you learn the principles of F**k It Training and then discover what F**k It Living really is, and how you can live every moment in a free, relaxed and F**k It way.
Think of a question - any question! (okay, maybe not a question
like "what was the name of my physics teacher?"). Then turn to a
page, and experience the magic... the magic of F**k It. We all have
questions. And the bestselling F**k It books have provided answers
to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The F**k It
philosophy - of not worrying so much, of letting go more, of caring
less what others think and doing your own thing - has provided
answers that work in real life, every day.In F**k It Is the Answer,
John C. Parkin adds another element to the F**k It mix: by inviting
you to ask your question, and then turn randomly to a page that
offers you a F**k It-style answer, he recruits the magical powers
of your own unconscious... or 'fate'... or 'spirit'... or whatever
it is that seems to guide us to the correct answers when we allow
it. So this book is about 'allowing it'. Just as F**k It is about
'allowing it' - relaxing, trusting, going with the flow, and
allowing the magic to happen. This book is F**k It Squared: taking
the powerful wisdom of F**k It, and then recruiting whatever
worldly or unworldly magic it is that makes this work.Make no
mistake though: work it does.So... ask your question, and turn to a
page.
