When a young American draft dodger from the Vietnam War disappears,
his anxious parents seek the help of a Buffalo, New York,
investigation company. The last coded postcard they received from
their son indicated that he was hiding out in Afghanistan. The
investigator photographs two bearded American young men camped in
Kabul arguing with a better-dressed Englishman, but neither is the
missing son. The trail goes cold. Thirty-five years later, a
western Australian friend of the widowed mother uncovers the names
of an Australian couple who were camped in Kabul at the time and
might be able to provide clues to the young man's disappearance.
The search is renewed, taking the investigators to Pakistan, the
Indian Himalayas, the red-light area of Bangkok, and to the
neighboring Laos.
The Papacy in the Age of Totalitarianism, 1914-1958 examines the
most momentous years in papal history. Popes Benedict XV
(1914-1922), Pius XI (1922-1939), and Pius XII (1939-1958) faced
the challenges of two world wars and the Cold War, and threats
posed by totalitarian dictatorships like Italian Fascism, German
National Socialism, and Communism in Russia and China. The wars
imposed enormous strains upon the unity of Catholics and the
hostility of the totalitarian regimes to Catholicism lead to the
Church facing persecution and martyrdom on a scale similar to that
experienced under the Roman Empire and following the French
Revolution. At the same time, these were years of growth,
development, and success for the papacy. Benedict healed the wounds
left by the 'modernist' witch hunt of his predecessor and
re-established the papacy as an influence in international affairs
through his peace diplomacy during the First World War. Pius XI
resolved the 'Roman Question' with Italy and put papal finances on
a sounder footing. He also helped reconcile the Catholic Church and
science by establishing the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and took
the first steps to move the Church away from entrenched
anti-Semitism. Pius XI continued his predecessor's policy of the
'indigenisation' of the missionary churches in preparation for
de-colonisation. Pius XII fully embraced the media and other means
of publicity, and with his infallible promulgation of the
Assumption in 1950, he took papal absolutism and centralism to such
heights that he has been called the 'last real pope'. Ironically,
he also prepared the way for the Second Vatican Council.
Over the past decade a complex role for DNA damage response (DDR)
in tumorigenesis has emerged. A proficient DDR has been shown to be
a primary cause for cellular resistance to the very many DNA
damaging drugs, and IR, that are widely used as standard-of-care
across multiple cancer types. It has also been shown that defects
in this network, predominantly within the ATM mediated signaling
pathway, are commonly observed in cancers and may be a primary
event during tumorigenesis. Such defects may promote a genomically
unstable environment, facilitating the persistence of mutations,
any of which may provide a growth or survival advantage to the
developing tumor. In addition, these somatic defects provide
opportunities to exploit a reliance on remaining repair pathways
for survival, a process which has been termed synthetic lethality.
As a result of all these observations there has been a great
interest in targeting the DDR to provide anti-cancer agents that
may have benefit as monotherapy in cancers with high background DNA
damage levels or as a means to increase the efficacy of DNA
damaging drugs and IR. In this book we will review a series of
important topics that are of great interest to a broad range of
academic, industrial and clinical researchers, including the basic
science of the DDR, its role in tumorigenesis and in dictating
response to DNA damaging drugs and IR. Additionally, we will focus
on the several proteins that have been targeted in attempts to
provide drug candidates, each of which appear to have quite
distinct profiles and could represent very different opportunities
to provide patient benefit.
John Pollard's book surveys the relationship between Catholicism
and the process of change in Italy from Unification to the present
day. Central to the book is the complex set of relationships
between traditional religion and the forces of change. In a broad
sweep, Catholicism in Modern Italy looks at the cultural, social,
political and economic aspects of the Catholic church and its
relationship to the different experiences across Italy over this
dramatic period of change and 'modernisation'.

This work examines the development of Italian fascism, and surveys
the themes and issues of the movement. It covers from the emergence
of the united Italian state and the political, social and economic
status of Italy in the 19th century, to the post-war aftermath of
fascism. The book provides: analysis of printed and broadcast
propaganda as well as Mussolini's journalism; documentary material,
previously unavailable in English; an extensive range of other
source material, including images; and thematic coverage of major
topics such as the transformation of Italian agrarian and urban
society and the actions of the Papacy. John Pollard includes fully
integrated analysis and extensive notes on sources as well as a
glossary and guide to further reading. He reassesses the status of
the fascist movement as a coalition rather than a monolith and
details the images of energy and violence which were crucial to the
success of fascism, both within Italy and internationally.

Best known for his efforts to end World War I. Benedict XV was the
first contemporary pope to assume the role of peacemaker, a role
that has persisted in the papacy since. Although Benedict's 1917
"Peace Note" was rejected by officials, he went on to help
establish Save the Children and to lead European efforts at
humanitarian aid. His brief pontificate resulted in a positive
reassessment of the Church's attitude towards colonialism and
colonized peoples. Using previously unpublished correspondence and
private papers from the Vatican archives, John Pollard has written
the first biography on Benedict XV in almost half a century.
