Counterfeit Murder (Hardcover): John R. Dean Counterfeit Murder (Hardcover)
John R. Dean
R728 Discovery Miles 7 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In late 1942, Operation Kinder-B is secretly developed by SS officers to support Operation Bernhard, Germany's attempt to produce counterfeit banknotes intended to destabilize the British economy. But as a bomber takes off from Holland to make a special delivery to German agents operating in England, no one really knows if the counterfeit scheme will be successful or not. Harry Cole, a German sleeper agent living and working in Leicester, is mobilized to collect a parachute drop of counterfeit notes. With help from a Nazi sympathizer, he deposits the counterfeit money into a local bank and waits for it to unleash misery on the British banking system. But when the operation is suddenly aborted, the order comes too late. As a police inspector and his sergeant attempt to track down German agents and their accomplices, fate leads Cole in an unimaginable direction. In this historical thriller, a German agent, a police inspector, and a sergeant are pulled into a dangerous..

Applications of Supercritical Fluids in Industrial Analysis (Hardcover, 1st ed): John R. Dean Applications of Supercritical Fluids in Industrial Analysis (Hardcover, 1st ed)

the continued search for rapid, efficient and cost-effective means of analytical measurement has introduced supercritical fluids into the field of analytical chemistry. Two areas are common: supercritical fluid chromatography and supercritical fluid extraction. Both seek to exploit the unique properties of a gas at temperatures and pressures above the critical point. The most common supercritical fluid is carbon dioxide employed because of its low critical temperature (310C), inertness, purity, non-toxicity and cheapness. Alternative supercritical fluids are also used and often in conjunction with modifiers. The combined gas-like mass transfer and liquid-like solvating characteristics have been used for improved chromatographic separation and faster sample preparation. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is complementary to gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) providing higher efficiency than HPLC, together, with the ability to analyse thermally labile and high molecular weight analytes. Both packed and open tubular columns can be employed, providing the capability to analyse a wide range of sample types. In addition, flame ionization detection can be used thus providing "universal" detection. The separation of complex mixtures by chromatography provides an effective means of identifying individual components. However, as with most techniques, it is the sample preparation which is both time and labour intensive. Traditionally, Soxhlet extraction has been employed but this has several disadvantages when extracting compounds of low and medium polarity using liquid solvents. Extractions are time consuming,. relatively unselective and use large amounts of hazardous solvents, so that further cleanup is usually necessary. Furthermore, after extraction and cleanup steps, the solution must usually be concentrated by evaporation prior to introduction into a chromatograph. Supercritical fluid extraction offers an elegant alternative to the currently applied extraction procedures. The ability of supercritical fluids to deposit extractants by simple depressurisation and/or cryogenic focusing means that solvent concentration can be done quickly and without heat or vacuum. These latter point are particularly important when one is seeking preservation of sensitive analytes. This text therefore seems appropriate at this stage to review the current situation regarding supercritical fluids in analytical chemistry and, to consider the future possibilities to which they may be applied.

This book covers one of the most important areas in analytical sciences, i.e. that of extraction techniques for organic compounds in environmental and related matrices, e.g. food. This text discusses all of the key stages for analysing a sample for organic compounds from the initial sampling protocols through to the range of different extraction techniques used for solid, liquid and air samples and finally through to the final chromatographic analysis. The text provides detailed information on specific extraction techniques to prepare samples for organic compound analysis.

The topics covered include the following: Initial steps for solid, aqueous and air sampling.Extraction techniques for aqueous samples, including LLE, purge and trap, SPE, SPME, SBSE, SDME, membrane microextraction and MEPS.Extraction techniques for solid samples, including Soxhlet, "Soxtec," shake-flask, sonication, PFE, MAE, SFE and MSPD.Extraction techniques for air sampling, including whole air, enrichment approaches and desorption techniques.Pre-concentration approaches for post-extraction.Practical aspects for chromatographic analysis (GC and HPLC) of organic compounds.Quality assurance aspects of analysis.Health and safety considerations.

Key features include the following: Up-to-date information on the latest development in extraction techniques for organic compounds in environmental and food matrices.Written in the AnTS style, it is ideal for use as a self-study guide, as the basis of a taught course or guided reading for new "early-career" researchers.Includes a resources section to guide the reader to other sources of information.

"Extraction Techniques in Analytical Sciences" should prove invaluable to students who are studying university-level courses - "undergraduate- to postgraduate-taught." The text will also prove invaluable as a key starting point for individuals undertaking applied research in the fields of analytical, bioanalytical, environmental and food sciences.

The Analytical Techniques in the Sciences series of books provides coverage of all of the major analytical techniques and their application in the most important areas of physical, life and material sciences. Each text is presented in an open learning/distance learning style, in which the learning objectives are clearly identified. The reader's understanding of the material is constantly evaluated by the use of self-assessment and discussion questions. Series Editor: David J. Ando

European Readings of American Popular Culture (Hardcover, New): John R. Dean, Jean-Paul Gabilliet European Readings of American Popular Culture (Hardcover, New)
John R. Dean, Jean-Paul Gabilliet
R2,710 Discovery Miles 27 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the Second World War, Europe has undergone a continual invasion: wave after wave of American popular culture. The diffusion of American culture in Europe is both a European story about America and an American story about Europe. This work examines this cross-cultural phenomenon from the European viewpoint. Nearly two dozen European experts in their respective fields offer an invigorating, engaging, and open-minded examination of America as perceived with the acute insight of the interested European outsider--a fruitful tradition that stretches back to Lafayette, de Tocqueville, and Goethe, to name three. Of interest to scholars, students, and general readers alike.

The book's focus is both sensuous and intellectual: how America is seen (The Image); heard (Popular Music); perused (The Written Word); digested (Food); learned from its common ways (Social Customs); perceived by minorities (Ethnic Cultures); and taken as an instrument of change (Americanization). It is the first book of its kind published in the United States. It is rich with selected, up-to-date critical bibliographies in areas for which very little information is otherwise available. In sum: a cogent, cross-cultural analysis of how U.S. popular culture exposes both European dreams of well-being and nightmares of discontent. These are insights which deserve to be savored.
