Clinical Applications of Cytokines and Growth Factors (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): John R. Wingard, George D. Demetri Clinical Applications of Cytokines and Growth Factors (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
John R. Wingard, George D. Demetri
R4,239 Discovery Miles 42 390 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The hematopoietic system plays roles that are crucial for survival of the host: delivery of oxygen to tissues, arrest of accidental blood leaking from blood vessels, and fending off of invading microbes by humoral, cell-mediated, and phagocytic immunity. The activity of the hematopoietic system is staggering: daily, a normal adult produces approximately 2.5 billion erythrocytes, 2.5 billion platelets, and 1 billion granulocytes per kilogram of body weight. This production is adjusted in a timely fashion to changes in actual needs and can vary from nearly none to many times the normal rate depending on needs which vary from day to day, or even minute to minute. In response to a variety of stimuli, the cellular components of the blood are promptly increased or decreased in production to maintain appropriate numbers to optimally protect the host from hypoxia, infection, and hemorrhage. How does this all happen and happen without over or under responding? There has been extraordinary growth in our understanding ofhematopoiesis over the last two decades. Occupying center stage is the pluripotent stern cell and its progeny. Hematopoietic stern cells have been characterized by their capacity for self renewal and their ability to proliferate and differentiate along multiple lineages. Few in number, the stern cell gives rise to all circulating neutrophils, erythrocytes, lymphoid cells, and platelets. In hematopoietic transplantation, the stern cell is capable of restoring long-term hematopoiesis in a lethally irradiated host.

Unlike any other source on the subject, this reference provides an up-to-date account of fungal syndromes in immunocompromised patients and provides expert descriptions of their clinical manifestations and settings in which they cause illness-covering the pros and cons of current and emerging diagnostic measures, techniques to incorporate new diagnostic tools and treatments into established clinical practices, and the most recent therapeutic strategies in patient care.

Gender, Ireland and Cultural Change - Race, Sex and Nation (Paperback): John R. Wingard, Raleigh A. Bowden Gender, Ireland and Cultural Change - Race, Sex and Nation (Paperback)
John R. Wingard, Raleigh A. Bowden
R1,783 Discovery Miles 17 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyzes the roots of Irish social and sexual conservatism and the dramatic change in one of the most basic areas of human experience: how we understand our roles as men and women. It looks at the relationship between sexual and cultural dissent and the long, slow role of culture in generating change. Meaney offers the first major study that sets the relationship between national and gender identities in the context of analysis of Irish identity as white identity, tracing the identification of female sexuality with foreign threat in nationalist discourse and its consequences in contemporary representations of immigrant women and their children. The study presents an extended analysis of the relationship between feminism and nationalism, and between gender and modernism. Analyzing the role of Joyce in contemporary culture and Yeats and Synge in the understanding of tradition, it also sets their work in the context of their less known female contemporaries and challenges conventional understandings of the Irish literary tradition. The book concludes with an analysis of the relationship between race and masculinity in Irish characters in US and British culture, from Patriot Games to Rescue Me and The Wire, The Romans in Britain to M.I.5
