AmericaNotes: Published by the Western Literary Institute and
edited by John W. Pickett, a pioneer in educational journalism,
this educational magazine proposed to "support broad, radical, and
liberal education" and to "embrace departments of general
literature and physical sciences." Among its contributors were
William H. McGuffey, Alexander Kimmont, and other western
educational leaders. Contents included meteorological observations,
literary notices, essays and articles on history, math, classical
literature, geology, electricity, language, and natural science,
and most importantly, on education--books, teaching, schools,
academies and colleges, and the philosophy and history of
education. The last few volumes contained the proceedings of the
College of Professional Teachers, and many reports and addresses.
