consists of 18 major papers by 20 authors from six countries on a
range of themes. The volume is framed by an extended editorial
introduction reflecting on the five- year exchange of
correspondence between James Coleman and the editor, together with
two of Coleman's own works.

This volume forms part of a series of publications on leading
contemporary sociologists. The work of each scholar chosen, in this
case John Goldthorpe, is internationally recognized, is still
relevant to the core of the discipline in the 1990s, is extensive
and thematic in coverage and is, at one and the same time,
consensus-generating and controversial. The book is divided into
three parts - the first provides a general introduction to
Goldthorpe's work, the second contains nine sets of paired
contributions and one "free-standing" chapter covering the main
themes of Goldthorpe's writings, and the third consists of
Goldthorpe responds to his critics. Goldthorpe concludes with a
Popperian committment to the idea of "Consensus and Controversy",
seeing them as the two modes of communicative action which lie at
the very heart of the scientific method. The volume concludes with
biographical details about the contributors, an outline
intellectual biography of John Goldthorpe and a consolidated
bibliography.

*************************************** "Kiley Jon Clark may be a
bit unfamiliar to readers used to "bigger" names in Buddhist print,
such as H.H. the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Pema Chodron, or Thich Nhat
Hanh, but his work is no less important." -JBriefka
"The teacher appears in human form, gives teachings, and shows us
the Path. Through their instructions and blessing a time will come
when their realization and ours will become One. At that time we
will realize that the absolute-inner-teacher has always been
present and 'is' our very nature." -Jamgon Kongtru
Written specifically to meet the needs of students, this engaging
book interweaves a fascinating case story with more general
analysis to offer an ideal introduction to the processes and issues
of managing organizational innovation and change. The story covers
10 years in the development of a major strategic initiative by
Pirelli General - the creation and operation of an automated
`factory of the future'. Each chapter advances the story through a
particular theme introduced by concise overviews of the main
theories, concepts and debates in the literature, and concludes
with questions for discussion. Key topics covered are: strategy and
structure - the competitive environment, strategic decision-making,
roles, relationships and tensions in a complex multinational; human
resource management and industrial relations - greenfield versus
`brownfield' siting, flexibility, multi-skilling, single-union
agreement, developing and implementing new HRM strategy;
technological innovation - designing and implementing
computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), the challenges and
problems of total automation; total quality management -
introducing a culture of continuous improvement; and managing
strategic innovation - continuity and change, leadership and
culture, ideals and realities, learning in organizations.
