Molecular and Translational Vascular Medicine (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Jonathon W. Homeister, Monte S. Willis Molecular and Translational Vascular Medicine (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Jonathon W. Homeister, Monte S. Willis
R5,809 Discovery Miles 58 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Molecular and Translational Vascular Medicine will serve as a state-of-the-art resource for physicians and translational medical researchers alike who are interested in the rapidly evolving field of vascular medicine. The text provides new insight into the basic mechanisms of classic vascular pathophysiologic processes like angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and vasculitis. Furthermore, it covers new areas of investigation including the role of the ubiquitin proteasome system in vascular disease, endothelial progenitor cells for disease treatment, and the genetic basis of thoracic aortic aneurysms. Lastly, this volume includes sections on the newly emerging field of therapeutic angiogenesis, and the developing technology of nanoparticle-based imaging and therapeutic treatment of the diseased vasculature. All chapters are written by established experts in their fields, including pathologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and internists as well as translational biomedical researchers in a wide range of disciplines. While comprehensive, the material is presented in a manner that simplifies the complex pathophysiologic mechanisms that underlie common vascular diseases. Molecular and Translational Vascular Medicine will be of great value to a broad audience including internists, cardiovascular and vascular surgeons, pathologists, residents and fellows, as well as translational biomedical researchers.

"Cellular and Molecular Pathobiology of Cardiovascular Disease "focuses on the pathophysiology of common cardiovascular disease in the context of its underlying mechanisms and molecular biology. This book has been developed from the editors' experiences teaching an advanced cardiovascular pathology course for PhD trainees in the biomedical sciences, and trainees in cardiology, pathology, public health, and veterinary medicine. No other single text-reference combines clinical cardiology and cardiovascular pathology with enough molecular content for graduate students in both biomedical research and clinical departments.

The text is complemented and supported by a rich variety of photomicrographs, diagrams of molecular relationships, and tables. It is uniquely useful to a wide audience of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in areas from pathology to physiology, genetics, pharmacology, and more, as well as medical residents in pathology, laboratory medicine, internal medicine, cardiovascular surgery, and cardiology.
Explains how to identify cardiovascular pathologies and compare with normal physiology to aid researchGives concise explanations of key issues and background reading suggestions Covers molecular bases of diseases for better understanding of molecular events that precede or accompany the development of pathology

Laboratory Exercises in Molecular Pathology is organized by major organ systems and disease type, presenting exercises that distill essential disease-specific information (related to frequency, risk factors, disease manifestations) and a description of disease pathogenesis (molecular and cellular) that is based upon accepted principles from today's literature. Each exercise is illustrated with (1) gross specimens, (2) microscopic histopathology, (3) immunohistochemistry and/or in situ hybridization (when applicable), (4) laboratory techniques to probe the molecular nature of the pathological lesions, and (5) molecular diagnostics (when applicable). In addition, each exercise contains one or more cases studies to provide students with exposure to the clinical workup of a patient that are based upon physical examination findings, traditional pathological analysis, and state-of-the-art molecular assessment. The laboratory techniques included emphasize the dissection of molecular and cellular pathogenesis of the disease in question. Hence, students will see examples of laboratory results that illustrate how pathways were elucidated. Further, the sections on molecular diagnostics illustrate how molecular testing exploits what is known about molecular pathogenesis in a specific disease setting.
