With sixty years of combined experience, the authors of this extensively revised book have learned to emphasize the fundamental materials science, structure-property relationships, and biological responses as a foundation for a wide array of biomaterials applications. This edition includes a new chapter on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, approximately 1900 references to additional reading, extensive tutorial materials on new developments in spinal implants and fixation techniques and theory. It also offers systematic coverage of orthopedic implants, and expanded treatment of ceramic materials and implants.
Bioceramics: Properties, Characterization, and Applications will be a general introduction to the uses of ceramics and glasses in the human body for the purposes of aiding, healing, correcting deformities, and restoring lost function. With over 30 years experience, the author developed the text as an outgrowth of an undergraduate course for senior students in biomedical engineering and will emphasize the fundamentals and applications in modern implant fabrication, and will also deal with tissue engineering scaffolds made of ceramics. Organized as a textbook for the student needing to acquire the core competencies, it will meet the demands of advanced undergraduate or graduate coursework in bioceramics, biomaterials, biomedical engineering, and biophysics.
This book, the result of a landmark colloquium held in Korea to reflect on the role of education in Korean society, provides fascinating insights into the interplay of political evolution and pedagogy. Korea has gone from one of the world's poorest societies after the Korean War to one of its richest, and is a home of technological innovation; many attribute this 'Korean Miracle' to the emphasis placed on education in this Confucian society. How did the Korean state form, and how were educational institutions created and given legitimacy? During the industrialization period- roughly, 1961-1994- how did education foster national development? Lastly, since 1995's May 31 Education Reform, how has the educational system responded to and created a new information age in a newly democratic Korea? This book will be of interest to East Asian scholars, scholars of education, human resources development, and IT, and historians looking for ways to achieve the 'Korean Miracle' in their own countries.
East Asia is a key region in the global economy, including both the second and third largest global economies already and, led by China, continuing to expand at a rapid rate. This economic growth has led to unprecedented gains in prosperity in the region but it has also led to increasing environmental pressures and energy issues. This book assesses ways in which East Asia can continue or even increase existing rates of economic growth while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental degradation. Using advanced modelling approaches, future scenarios for four East Asian countries are assessed in detail, including analysis of particular challenges in each country (e.g. coal power in China, nuclear power in Japan). Prospects for each country's energy system are assessed in detail and the potential effects of various types of Environmental Tax Reform in the four countries are also considered carefully. The final section of the book explores the interaction between trade liberalization, a key driver of growth, and emission levels in the East Asia region.

The twenty-first century has seen a further dramatic increase in the use of quantitative knowledge for governing social life after its explosion in the 1980s. Indicators and rankings play an increasing role in the way governmental and non-governmental organizations distribute attention, make decisions, and allocate scarce resources. Quantitative knowledge promises to be more objective and straightforward as well as more transparent and open for public debate than qualitative knowledge, thus producing more democratic decision-making. However, we know little about the social processes through which this knowledge is constituted nor its effects. Understanding how such numeric knowledge is produced and used is increasingly important as proliferating technologies of quantification alter modes of knowing in subtle and often unrecognized ways. This book explores the implications of the global multiplication of indicators as a specific technology of numeric knowledge production used in governance.

One of our clients wanted to talk about how to succeed in his business. The inquiry came because he wanted to find out how to move to the next level; how he can move forward as a business. Most of all, he was worried about all the uncertainty and complexity in the market and how he can put all of these concerns into perspective. Since he was in manufacturing, we knew that he would relate to things better by illustrating the process like some kind of mechanical apparatus. So, we picked up the car as a conceptual illustrative tool of business reality for ease of understanding and concept presentation. This sort of arbitrary selection of the analogy of using an automobile as an example, can not be used as a generalization. However, it is 'useful' in catching the key concepts and factors which we need to make use in the actual business reality. We use the components of a car as the metaphor to illustrate the relationships that exist in a business and how to make sense of things which seemingly do not have any relations to each other. All parts are interrelated and play a significant role in the functionality of a car and how it works. In the same way, every component of a business, organization and/or enterprise, is designed and operating in a highly complex interrelated setting. Of course, one can do without some parts, while another might have a strip down version or a supped up one, while others can tolerate some inefficiencies or little scratches on the 'bumper'. In addition, there a lot more that needs to be taken into consideration; the driver, the type of car, the condition of the road, etc., but all of these are part of the discussion and exploration of the concepts. All lead into trying to make sense out of concepts, which are related, but yet independent and to bring some certainty into uncertain conditions and circumstances. This book is part of a series whereby each book focuses on one component of a car, or a component of a business. While this book alludes to the other components, this book of the series goes much deeper in the strategy and operations of an organization; the engine part. In the meantime, it highlights the rest of the car or business areas. We wanted to make this book series easy to read and to relate, in order to catch the attention of all those who need to put things into perspective and connect all elements of strategy and business together; to go from simple to more complex in an easy presentation way. This book is intended for all those who are interested in the topic area of strategy and business. We are trying to make uncertain things certain, and complex ones less threatening. By no means the topics are not important or impactful. On the contrary, they are significant, complex, interdependent but manageable.
An investigation into the characteristics of the wing tip vortex on a flexible wing micro-air-vehicle (MAV) was conducted. The Air Force Research Lab, Munitions Directorate designed a man-portable MAV with a 24" wingspan and 6" root chord to be used for battle damage assessment and reconnaissance or local surveillance. For this MAV, two prototypes have been produced. One has a rigid wing prepared from carbonfiber; the other has a flexible wing prepared from parachute-latex material attached to a carbon-fiber frame. The experiments were performed to investigate the wing displacement and wing tip vortex interaction, characterizing the differences and effects of wing displacement and the shifting and velocity of wing tip vortex between two prototypes placed in typical operating conditions. Initially, each aircraft model was mounted at the test section in the low speed wind tunnel and exposed to various angles of attack and wind conditions. An optical telescope was used to measure the wing tip displacement and a tri-axial hot-wire anemometer was used to capture the velocity profiles in the wind tunnel to characterize wing tip vortex system. The results indicate that the wing tip displacement of the flexible wing was approximately 8 times than that of the rigid wing in an unstalled condition. The data suggests that flexible wing has a denser core-distribution of velocity within the wing tip vortex and delays the angle at which separation occurs.
