In response to the recent surge in extractive natural resource investments in Africa, this insightful book explores how relations between investors, ruling elites, and local populations develop when large-scale investments in gas, minerals, and agriculture expand. Advancing a multi-level approach that encompasses rigorous theoretical analysis, fieldwork, and literature review, expert contributors examine the implementation of natural resource investments and the extent to which they respect procedural rights of local populations. Chapters draw together understudied bodies of literature on land-grabbing debates, the resource curse controversy and corporate social responsibility (CSR), demonstrating how the chances of large-scale investments in natural resources are at their greatest when characterised by 'reciprocal exchange deals' between investors and local populations, 'compatible interests' between ruling elites and investors, and 'mutual recognition' between local populations and ruling elites. Through a careful examination of case studies in Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda, the book ultimately highlights the complexity of the political economy of natural resource investments. Providing valuable theoretical and empirical insights, this book will be an invigorating read for scholars and students of political economy, political geography, sustainability, CSR, and business studies. Its valuable insights on how natural resource investments might accelerate economic growth and consolidate links between local and global economies will also be of interest to development practitioners and investors.

Discover a fascinating region in Southern Spain that offers the most tantalizing food, through 75 authentic recipes, written with expertise and using authentic ingredients. Andalucia is the largest region of Spain and has a food tradition that is rich in shades from the past: Moorish, Christian and Jewish influences prevail, but there is so much more to discover. Following decades, if not centuries, in which the local food accepted prejudice from outsiders, any change or innovation was inhibited; but now a fascinating revival is taking place everywhere in Andalucia, as in the rest of Spain. This is supported by the array of amazing ingredients from land and sea, by memories and aromas from the past and by current innovation by Spanish chefs. La Cocina Andalucia has become even more attractive, improved without losing any of its character and taste. This selection of truly authentic recipes have been developed by Maria Jose Sevilla during time spent in her house in Aracena near Seville. Each recipe will be accompanied by short histories relating to the character of a chosen locality, a particular dish or equally important, the people that grow and prepare the food. It would not be a book about the food loved by the Andalucians without including some local ingredients and regional specialities such as Iberico hams from Huelva, olive oils from Cordoba or Jaen, olives from Seville or sherry vinegar, sea salt and tiger prawns in Cadiz. Foundations of Public Contracts undertakes an in-depth survey of the foundations of public contracts in three legal systems: American, French, and Brazilian. The comparison of these three systems highlights the legal phenomenon's historical, philosophical, and social origins. The book transcends the functional commonalities to penetrate into how American, French, and Brazilian lawyers think about the essence of government contracts law, the phenomenon of exceptionalism: preferential treatment that public procurement law provides to the state in its contractual dealing with private entities. Comparative public law professors and students will find great value in this exploration of the material sources of public contracts, an area that has heretofore received little attention in legal academia.
The fourth edition of this popular text has been significantly rewritten to make it more accessible to students and easier for instructors to use. It remains distinctive in presenting a unified narrative of cognitive science as a field of inquiry in its own right. Thematically organized, Cognitive Science underscores the problems and solutions of cognitive science rather than more narrowly examining individually the subjects that contribute to it - psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, and so on. The generous use of examples, illustrations, and applications demonstrates how theory and experiment can be applied to unlock the mysteries of the human mind. Drawing upon cutting-edge research, the text has been updated and enhanced with a new chapter on emotions and the emerging field of affective science. An extensive online set of resources is available to aid both instructors and students.

Polemics, Literature, and Knowledge in Eighteenth-Century Mexico is the first study to comprehensively analyse the configuration of the idea of the Republic of Letters in an eighteenth-century Latin American country. Taking a multisided approach to Mexican culture of the era, this book's analysis of literary texts engages with an exploration of such concepts as the Republic of Letters and the archive, as well as their connections to transatlantic polemics on knowledge production in the New World and debates on philosophical systems of learning. It furthermore draws upon the history of science in Mexico in order to trace the development of scientific thought and its influence on culture, religion, and fiction. This study proposes that eighteenth-century Mexican writers sought to establish a place within a global scholarly community for their local literary republic through the formation of scholarly networks, the historical exploration of the past and present, and the creation of new epistemological approaches to literary production inspired by Enlightenment ideas. This book invites those devoted to the study of eighteenth-century cultures to engage in an examination of a lesser-explored scholarly territory and its networks, and to think about how it was heterogeneously constructed by many-sided polemics and debates which manifested in a broad range of literary works.
In this thought-provoking book, Jose M. Magone investigates the growing political, economic and social divisions between the core countries of the European Union and the southern European periphery. He examines the major hindrances that are preventing the four main southern European countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece) from keeping up with the increasing pace of European integration, and the effects that this is having on democratic governance. Offering a comprehensive comparative overview of southern European politics over the past two decades, the book analyses the impact of the EU's political economy on democracy in the region, in particular the consequences of the Eurocrisis and the economic instability of the 2010s. It argues that these countries have failed to proactively initiate necessary strategic reforms in order to prevent economic and democratic stagnation, and have especially struggled to cope with the changing realities of Europeanization and the demands of Economic and Monetary Union. Students and scholars of European politics will find this book useful and insightful, in particular those interested in southern Europe's political economy and Europeanization. It will also be beneficial for policy makers working in southern European governments and organizations.
This definitive Research Handbook explores the restructuring strategies of globalised firms, bringing together a wide range of topics from export exit, subsidiary divestment and market re-entry to relocation, offshoring and backshoring. Contributors from diverse fields including marketing, entrepreneurship, strategic management and economics provide a multi-dimensional methodological approach to the analysis of exit. They consider exit both in terms of export markets and foreign direct investment, and in terms of subsequent re-entry in the same markets as well as relocation to other countries. Taking a global view, chapters, which take the shape of literature reviews, conceptual works and qualitative and quantitative studies, represent diverse regions and country contexts, such as China, the EU, Norway, Russia and the US. Providing an overview of international divestments and their associated phenomena of relocation and re-entry, the book concludes by presenting avenues for further research. Drawing together conceptual works, case studies, quantitative studies, bibliometric analysis and meta-analysis, this timely Research Handbook will be a valuable resource for researchers and students of international business. Its use of empirical case studies will also be valuable for business practitioners interested in international divestment and export exit.
