This volume offers a new understanding of the role of the media in
the Portuguese Empire, shedding light on the interactions between
communications, policy, economics, society, culture, and national
identities. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, this book
comprises studies in journalism, communication, history,
literature, sociology, and anthropology, focusing on such diverse
subjects as the expansion of the printing press, the development of
newspapers and radio, state propaganda in the metropolitan Portugal
and the colonies, censorship, and the uses of media by opposition
groups. It encourages an understanding of the articulations and
tensions between the different groups that participated, willingly
or not, in the establishment, maintenance and overthrow of the
Portuguese Empire in Angola, Mozambique, Sao Tome e Principe, Cape
Verde, Guinea-Bissau, India, and East Timor.
"Spanish Money and Banking" provides new insights into recent
advances in financial and monetary history and theory, and
demonstrates the significance of Spain to modern banking, monetary,
and development theory. Using a comparative approach, it brings
together a substantial amount of research carried out in Spain and
abroad. It also contributes to scholarly debates on aspects of
monetary and banking history, topics such as free vs regulated
banking, metallic vs fiduciary money, specialized vs universal
banking, bank- vs market-led finance, banking repression vs
liberalization, the contribution of banking and money to growth,
and the role of the state in financial and economic development. It
also shows how financial and monetary mismanagement contributed to
the decline of Spain in the early modern era, and how the
development of the banking sector later on contributed to the first
stirrings of development in modern Spain, especially in the 20th
century, throwing light as well on the causes of the recent
European crisis and the part Spain played in it.
This volume rethinks the work of Jacques Ellul (1912-1994) on
the centenary of his birth, by presenting an overview of the
current debates based on Ellul's insights. As one of the most
significant twentieth-century thinkers about technology, Ellul was
among the first thinkers to realize the importance of topics such
as globalization, terrorism, communication technologies and
ecology, and study them from a technological perspective.
The book is divided into three sections. The first discusses
Ellul's diagnosis of modern society, and addresses the reception of
his work on the technological society, the notion of efficiency,
the process of symbolization/de-symbolization, and ecology. The
second analyzes communicational and cultural problems, as well as
threats and trends in early twenty-first century societies. Many of
the issues Ellul saw as crucial - such as energy, propaganda,
applied life sciences and communication - continue to be so. In
fact they have grown exponentially, on a global scale, producing
new forms of risk.
Essays in the final section examine the duality of reason and
revelation. They pursue an understanding of Ellul in terms of the
depth of experience and the traditions of human knowledge, which is
to say, on the one hand, the experience of the human being as
contained in the rationalist, sociological and philosophical
traditions. On the other hand there are the transcendent roots of
human existence, as well as "revealed knowledge," in the mystical
and religious traditions. The meeting of these two traditions
enables us to look at Ellul's work as a whole, but above all it
opens up a space for examining religious life in the technological
society.
This volume covers the latest protocols designed to identify and
characterize TEs in genomes, ancient or recently inserted.
Additionally, this book includes a series of protocols designed to
understand how host genomes act to regulate the activity of TEs,
from elegant genetic mobilization assays to key biochemical
methods. Finally, this book also includes chapters that describe
how TEs can be used for biotechnological applications. Written for
the Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include
introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary
materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible
laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding
known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Transposons and
Retrotransposons: Methods and Protocols aims to ensure successful
results in the further study of this vital field.
This book offers a comprehensive coverage of process simulation and
flowsheeting, useful for undergraduate students of Chemical
Engineering and Process Engineering as theoretical and practical
support in Process Design, Process Simulation, Process Engineering,
Plant Design, and Process Control courses. The main concepts
related to process simulation and application tools are presented
and discussed in the framework of typical problems found in
engineering design. The topics presented in the chapters are
organized in an inductive way, starting from the more simplistic
simulations up to some complex problems.

The word consensus has been frequently used for centuries, perhaps
millenia. People have always deemed it important that decisions
having a long lasting impact on groups, countries or even
civilizations be arrived at in a consensual manner. Undoubtedly the
complexity of modern world in all its social, technological,
economic and cultural dimensions has created new environments where
consensus is regarded desirable. Consensus typically denotes a
state of agreement prevailing in a group of agents, human or
software. In the strict sense of the term, consensus means that the
agreement be unanimous. Since such a state is often unreachable or
even unnecessary, other less demanding consensus-related notions
have been introduced. These typically involve some graded, partial
or imprecise concepts. The contributions to this volume define and
utilize such less demanding - and thus at the same time more
general - notions of consensus. However, consensus can also refer
to a process whereby the state of agreement is reached. Again this
state can be something less stringent than a complete unanimity of
all agents regarding all options. The process may involve
modifications, resolutions and /or mitigations of the views or
inputs of individuals or software agents in order to achieve the
state of consensus understood in the more general sense. The
consensus reaching processes call for some soft computational
approaches, methods and techniques, notably fuzzy and possibilistic
ones. These are needed to accommodate the imprecision in the very
meaning of some basic concepts utilized in the definition of
consensus as a state of agreement and as a process whereby this
state is to be reached. The overall aim of this volume is to
provide a comprehensive overview and analysis of the issues related
to consensus states and consensual processes.

In recent years, knowledge of epigenetic mechanisms underlying
disease onset and progression has proven crucial for the
development of novel early diagnosis and prognosis biomarkers for
patient stratification and precision medicine. Epigenetics in
Precision Medicine, a new volume in the Translational Epigenetics
series, provides a thorough discussion and overview of current
developments in clinical epigenetics with special emphasis on
epigenetic biomarkers that can be used for clinical diagnosis,
prognosis, patient stratification, and treatment monitoring.
Disease types discussed include cancer, metabolic disorders,
neurodegenerative diseases, bone disease, and immune-related
disorders. The book examines the challenges of advancing
epigenetics research and translating findings to the clinic and
drug discovery in each of these areas, as well as current
solutions; chapter authors discuss how to leverage epigenomic
technologies, applications, and tools, such as next-generation
sequencing, to discover new epigenetic biomarkers in disease and
drug studies. Epigenetics in Precision Medicine focuses on complex
epigenetic mechanisms in several pathologies, and explores how
epigenetics can power the advance of precision medicine, not only
by improving in vitro diagnostic and prognostic tools, but by
providing new therapeutic approaches to treat human disease.
Epigenetic Biomarkers and Diagnostics comprises 31 chapters
contributed by leading active researchers in basic and clinical
epigenetics. The book begins with the basis of epigenetic
mechanisms and descriptions of epigenetic biomarkers that can be
used in clinical diagnostics and prognostics. It goes on to discuss
classical methods and next generation sequencing-based technologies
to discover and analyze epigenetic biomarkers. The book concludes
with an account of DNA methylation, post-translational
modifications and noncoding RNAs as the most promising biomarkers
for cancer (i.e. breast, lung, colon, etc.), metabolic disorders
(i.e. diabetes and obesity), autoimmune diseases, infertility,
allergy, infectious diseases, and neurological disorders. The book
describes the challenging aspects of research in epigenetics, and
current findings regarding new epigenetic elements and modifiers,
providing guidance for researchers interested in the most advanced
technologies and tested biomarkers to be used in the clinical
diagnosis or prognosis of disease.
